Boston, MA (LifeNews.com) -- Haleigh Poutre was the victim of child abuse and was nearly killed via euthanasia when Massachusetts officials gave up on her after she entered a coma. Now Poutre, once termed "brain dead" by doctors, continues to improve and is speaking a few words, her grandmother says.
Sandra Sudyka, the girl's biological grandmother, is no longer allowed to visit her granddaughter and now says she is ready to speak to the media about Poutre's condition.
She told The Republican newspaper that she last saw Poutre on July 18 but indicated she was "doing well."
"She was bright-eyed and smiling. She is always responsive to us," Sudyka explained.
Department of Social Services had asked Sudyka not to talk with reporters about Haleigh, but since they will no longer allow her and Haleigh's biological mother, Allison Avrett, to visit the 12 year-old, she said she's going to talk to the media.
"I decided since they broke the deal, I am going to talk. People should know how well she is doing," Sudyka told the newspaper.
"They don't want people to know how she is doing after they wanted to pull the plug," Sudyka said.
DSS spokeswoman Denise Monteiro declined an interview with The Republican but said that the visiting privileges have been suspended, not terminated.
Haleigh first began speaking in June, her grandmother told the newspaper.
"I was saying to her 'I love you,' and she was trying to say 'love' and it came out as a vibration...'ove,'" Sudyka said.
Sudyka, who is working with an attorney to adopt the girl, said she has said hello, responds to comments and questions, speaks nonverbally and is able to write her name. Haleigh can't walk and is confined to a wheelchair.
Avrett, Poutre's biological mother, lost custody of her daughter after physically abusing her. Poutre was put into a foster home where her adoptive parents also abused her. Her adopted mother committed suicide after abusing Poutre so much she had to be hospitalized.
DSS took Poutre into custody and when she appeared to slip into a coma, the agency asked the state Supreme Court for permission to take her life. That's when Poutre began responding.
Poutre has been receiving physical, speech and occupational therapy since January 26 at Franciscan Hospital for Children in Brighton.
Gov. Mitt Romney appointed a commission to look into how the state failed to properly handle the girl's case.
Yes.
What if Greer decided that 1) Terri was conscious and 2) she was unable to communicate?
Michael and the other Schiavos could still have said that Terri would not want to live "this way."
Michael would still have had the final word and could still have decided to starve and dehydrate her.
Terri screaming when she learned the tube was coming out in March of 2005, the 18th or 17th, didn't mean a thing. She wasn't afraid. It was just a reflex action. (yeah right). Terri was horrified because they'd tried to kill her twice before!
Singer's in St. Pete tonight. We may have an after action report or a news account tomorrow.
The Massachussetts DSS workers who wanted the girl killed should be prosecuted for attempted murder. Plain and simple.

The ghouls had a glib explanation for everything.
Greer should have visited Terri in person and handed down his sentence in person and the visit should have been videotaped.

Thank you petnurser.
ah, demigod Greer, much beloved by the euthanasia movement, much admired by too many freepers. He could waste his time visiting Terri to reinforce his execution orders. And the guvernor couldn't risk granting Terri a pardon from the executioner's sleazy fiat execution. And the floriduh judicial overseers at the floriduh subpreme court couldn't risk overturning a ruling by on eof their own or looking over the actual data in and around the murder-by-court-proxy. And ... oh, never mind, robertpaulson and Hildy have already told me I haven't a proper perspective on the execution of that 'useless eater'. May God have mercy upon US for the twists of societal engineering we do not oppose properly to value LIFE. Rest in Peace, Terri, your detractors will not.

Avrett also wants the state to share files concerning Haleigh's adoption and care. "We think (DSS) has hidden information because they don't want anyone to sue on behalf of Haleigh because it's going to cost them a lot of money," Murphy said.Avrett said in an affidavit attached to her lawsuit that Haleigh had been showing improvement on her most recent visits, including responding to questions with hand signals, showing emotion by touching, and eating solid food.

Samantha Mitchell is guilty of second-degree murder for shaking to death a 4-month-old boy in March 2005, a jury decided Thursday night.

By the next morning, doctors at Arkansas Childrens Hospital in Little Rock were saying Dominick had virtually no chance to survive. He was removed from life support after organ donation.
First they took his organs, then they removed him from "life support," which we all know can mean basic care like food and water. They don't say which organs they removed, nor how long he lived after they removed his organs and "life support."
I, for one, am itching to know how Holli Stickland took Haleigh away from her mother (Avrett) and was awarded custody by the DSS.
Two petitions are circulating aimed at dispensing some sort of earthly justice to Judge Greer. Amdgmary introduced the one in post #299 and petnurser posted the other one in #310 just above. Here they are again:

Terri on the road to recovery before the second stage began.
We predicted it and sure enough. The MSM is all a-panic about the revelations that the "PVS" woman in Great Britain was linking in minds of many with the plight of Terri. Today cookie cutter stories abound throughout the media in hopes of driving a wedge to separate any possible connection. Here is one of the many identical stories today by the one and same Ellen Goodman, (Goodman, now is that opposite badwoman?). Art Caplan did not find all this news to be cheerful either. Death is cheering to these types. Good news to people of good will is bad news to them.
What are we to make of this? An editorial in Science magazine, which published the research, was quick to warn that this case is nothing like that of Terri Schiavo. The British woman has something Terri did not have: a cortex. She suffered an injury, not a lack of oxygen. She was in her unresponsive condition for five months, not 15 years. She was not in a persistent vegetative state.
Nevertheless, those who play politics in their heads have found this research useful. Terri's father, Robert Schindler, declared game, set, match in the controversy: ``This new case is not surprising to our family."

Always wary of the political and moral implications of their results, there were the predictable claims that the results shouldn't been seen as having broad implications to other PVS patients. Of course the PVS patient par excellence, Terri Schiavo, was immediately brought up: James Bernat, a neurologist at Dartmouth Medical School, claimed, "I'm quite confident that [Schiavo] would not have responded in this way." At the same time, however, he too was taken aback: "It's a little disturbing. This suggests there may be things going on inside people's minds that we can't assess by interacting with them at the bedside."
The reason, of course, that some find this study disturbing is because they believe it would entail a different moral status, and thus medical treatment, of the PVS patient. No longer dehumanized to mere biological life, the patient might retain activity in the mind, and thus rightly be classified as a person. Even some pro-lifers make the mistake of arguing along these lines, as if this recent study vindicates the anti-euthanasia position. "See, she has a mental life, we just can't notice it through our normal five senses," so the argument would go.
