It wasn't easy, but I battled my way this morning to the end of Frank Rich's pay-per-view column, Donald Rumsfelds Dance With the Nazis. Tempting as it was, I didn't turn the cyber-page. This despite prose - such as this condemning Sec. Rumsfeld's recent speech - that you might find in the dictionary next to the definition of 'turgid': "[a] toxic effort to impugn the patriotism of administration critics by conflating dissent on Iraq with cut-and-run surrender and incipient treason."
My persistence was rewarded with two nuggets from the column's concluding paragraphs. First, as a certified spokesman for MSM sentiment, Rich made clear that in liberal media-land, Iraq is not part of the war on terror. Rich dismissed Pres. Bush's assertion that the Al-Qaeda and our foes in Iraq are part of the same ideological struggle of the 21st century. Sniffed Rich: "One more drop in the polls, and he may yet rebrand this mess War of the Worlds." Movie titles aside, and messy as it might be, we are indeed engaged in a new kind of world war. And if more proof were needed that the MSM doesn't understand that, here it was.
Finally, Rich tipped the MSM's hand as to what will be the next major MSM Bush-bashing milestone: the day on which the number of American lives lost in Iraq equals that of 9/11. Here's how Rich foreshadowed what is sure to be an unrestrained liberal feeding frenzy: "The number of American dead in Iraq now more than 2,600 is inexorably approaching the death toll of that Tuesday morning five years ago."
In Rich were writing during WWII, would he have demanded that FDR call off the dogs on the day American war casualties equaled those lost at Pearl Harbor?
NY Times/NewsBusters Frank-Rich-tip ping to Today show list.
Turgid indeed.
Some time ago I said that the left would make a big deal out of the fact that more troops have died than civilians in 9/11. And they'll replay the Vice President saying (paraphrase) that: "For the first time in our nation's history we may have more civilians killed in war than soldiers."
If frank rich was journalist on June 7th, 1944, he would have declared WW II a failure and that the US should surrender to hitler, using his today's "logic".
Just to remind you of what Frank Rich had to say about Plamegate.
"It is about the president of the United States. It is about a plot that was hatched at the top of the administration and in which everyone else, Mr. Rove included, are at most secondary players." --Frank Rich, New York Times, July 17, 2005 (http://www.nytimes.com/2005/07/17/opinion/17rich.html?incamp=article_popular). "
A moonbat LTE in my paper this morning declared that the 3000 deaths on 9/11 are no big loss considering we lose 40,000 a year to traffic accidents.
His premise was that those deaths are not worth losing any civil rights over.
How do you fight ignorance on that scale?
Thanks for pointing that out. Not holding breath for Rich's retraction ;-)
I'm wondering if the Sunday Talk Shows today will even mention Armitage and Plamegate. I'm not holding my breath any of them will discuss, chide or reprimand the elite among them who were so wrong.
The best thing the NYTimes ever did is firewall their columnists like Rich and Dowd in NYTimes Select. It's almost like they no longer exist.
I've often been called a masochist for my perennial perusal of the Today show. How much worse that I actually pay for the 'privilege' of reading Rich, Dowd et. al? ;-)
I always knew that when the number equalled 9/11 numbers that it would be huge news. This is not new. I bet every FREEPER here figured that would happen. Any numbers to appease the lefties will be used to give negative press about the Iraq war. I just hope this number does not come out on 1 November or something like that.
Do you suppose journalists would be so cavalier if, to steal an idea from Ann Coulter, the terrorists had leveled simultaneous attacks against media offices in New York, LA, and Chicago?
Without Ernesto's cooperation, the Katrina Bush-bashing milestone must have been a major disappointment for the MSM. They will definitely be looking forward to a milestone body-count they can use against Bush.
I'll tell you how.
Tell the liberal "It's a civil rights issue" (upon hearing this phrase, the liberal skulls full of mush will take in anything you say)
Every nation of earth recognizes it, this right to continue to live, to simply be alive, as the most widely recognized and enforced law around the world.
When people plot, finance, rehearse, execute and applaud the slaughter of thousands and thousands and thousands of my people, it simply can not stand.
It's a human right.
It's a civil right.
When your liberal friend tries to explain away this breach of human rights by comparing it to other causes of death, remind him it's about malice. Cancer has no malice, Alzheimer's disease does not plot, finance, rehearse, execute and applaud the slaughter. Islam does.
Counting in non combat deaths is something they have done from the beginning.
How conveniently they ignore the sad fact that there are about 1,000 accidental training deaths in the military EVERY year.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Too bad for Frank Rich.
George Bush is stil President and Don Rumsfield is Sec Def.
Frank and his friends at te NYT face a crappy day every time they wake up.
Heck, they would have declared the war a failure in the quagmire of Guadalcanal.
I've tried telling moonbats that life is the greatest civil right.
I believe their brains are incapable of processing that thought. Apparently, Hate Bush Syndrome atrophies that portion of it.
