Terror suspect brothers charged in Britain
Yahoo News ^ | September 11 2006 | AFP
Posted on 09/11/2006 2:21:45 PM PDT by knighthawk
LONDON (AFP) - Two brothers were charged in connection with an investigation targeting an alleged terror recruitment network, police said.
The pair were among 14 people arrested across London in overnight raids on September 1, including at a Chinese restaurant. Police were later granted a warrant by a court to detain another of the suspects until Wednesday.
Under British anti-terror laws, suspects can be held for up to 28 days without being charged, subject to regular court approval.
Yassin Mutegombwa, 22, is charged with three counts of receiving training for terrorism, a new offence contrary to section 6 of the Terrorism Act 2006.
Hassan Mutegombwa, 20, was charged with one count of procuring funds for terrorism contrary to section 15 of the Terrorism Act 2000.
The pair, both from Upper Norwood, south London, will appear before City of Westminster Magistrates in London on Tuesday.
The charges against Yassin Mutegombwa allege that he received terrorism training in woodland near a campsite in Lyndhurst, southern England, and at White Waltham, west of London.
Each count alleges that while at these locations, "instruction or training of the type mentioned in Section 6 (1) of this Act or Section 54 (1) of the Terrorism Act 2000 (weapons training) was provided wholly or partly for the purposes connected with the commission or preparation of acts of terrorism".
The charge against his brother alleges that he "invited another to provide money and intended that it should be used, or had reasonable cause to suspect that it may be used, for the purpose of terrorism".
Police have until later Monday to question two of the 14 people originally arrested. They have until Wednesday for one of them, Friday for four, and Saturday for a further two.
Two of those arrested have been released without charge.

Taliban Extremist Targets Funeral; Afghan, Coalition Forces Capture Terrorists
American Forces Press Service
WASHINGTON, Sept. 11, 2006 A Taliban suicide bomber detonated an explosive strapped to his body today during the funeral ceremony for the late governor of Afghanistans Paktia province, Mohammad Hakim Taniwal, U.S. military officials reported.
As family, friends, colleagues and government officials paid their last respects to Taniwal in Khowst province, the suicide bomber approached the funeral and detonated the explosive, killing six people, including two Afghan National Police officers, and injuring more than 35 civilians. Religious leaders condemned the attack, officials said.
Coalition forces responded immediately and transported the injured to the Khowst hospital, where they are being treated.
The Taliban have dishonored the sanctity of a Muslim funeral, said Army Lt. Col. Paul Fitzpatrick, Combined Joint Task Force 76 spokesman. The Taliban have no regard for life and no respect for honor, tradition or religion. Todays attack proves to all Afghans and Muslims that the Taliban are willing to destroy the future of Afghanistan and its peoples way of life.
Todays attack will not deter reconstruction and development in the province or throughout Afghanistan, Fitzpatrick said. Good governance and security will continue to be extended throughout Afghanistan, he said. The government showed its strength and resolve by the smooth transition of provincial governance in a time of crisis.
In other new from Afghanistan, Afghan and coalition forces detained a known al Qaeda member today during an early-morning raid of a compound in Nangarhar province. Six other suspected al Qaeda associates also were detained without incident, officials said.
Intelligence indicates the detainees were involved in anti-government and anti-coalition activities. Several women and children also were located in the compound, and a large number of documents were confiscated. No civilians, or Afghan or coalition forces were injured during the operation.
Also, Afghan and coalition forces detained two suspected terrorists in Khowst province during an operation yesterday. The suspects were detained after Afghan authorities entered multiple compounds, which intelligence indicated were used by al Qaeda members.
The detained terrorists are linked to plotting makeshift-bomb attacks against Afghan and coalition forces in Khowst province. Several women and children were present within the compounds, and all were unharmed during the operation, officials said
No Afghan or coalition forces were injured during the operation.

Guns found at Delhi(CA) High School
The Modesto Bee ^ | September 11, 2006, 02:38:49 PM PDT | Michael R. Shea
Posted on 09/11/2006 3:48:36 PM PDT by keat
DELHI -- Deputies are investigating the discovery of four loaded guns, including an assault rifle, near the campus of Delhi High School. The school in northern Merced County is on lockdown after a man looking for aluminum cans found the guns in a backpack across the street about 9 a.m., Merced County Sheriff's officials said.
The joint middle and high school complex remains locked down while deputies look into the situation, which has "overtones of Columbine," said Merced County Sheriff Mark Pazin.
"The irony of this being the fifth year anniversary of Sept. 11 does not escape me," Pazin said. "We're hoping there isn't some sick or demented people or persons looking to take advantage of the anniversary."
Deputies said the guns, a Russian-made SKS 7.62 mm assault rifle with a loaded 30-round banana clip, a .380 Versa semiautomatic handgun, a .40 caliber semiautomatic Walther pistol and a .357 Magnum revolver, were found in the shrubs on Merced Avenue just across the street earlier this morning.
Detective Vince Gallagher said of the rifle, "This gun is made for a purpose. It's not hunting. It's killing humans. This is what the world uses to go to war."
Roughly 850 students remain on the 25-acre campus this afternoon while K-9 units and deputies search each classroom.

PKK bomb explodes in truck, 2 terrorists captured
Hurriyet: Two PKK terrorists who had reportedly left their training camp in Northern Iraq to come to Istanbul and carry out an attack were caught by police when a bomb they tried to throw at police instead exploded in their truck. Mehmet Zahit Sahin and Ramazan Ceber left the Istanbul neighborhood of Umraniye on September 6, followed by a team of Turkish intelligence agents.
When the two terrorists realized they were being followed in Esenyurt, they first fired on the security forces, and then tried to throw a bomb from their truck towards the police. The two men were captured shortly afterwards in an operation which also netted a variety of firearms. Both men also admitted during questioning that they had been involved in the August attacks in Istanbul against the Esenyurt AKP building and the Bagcilar municipality building.

Where Were You (When The World Stopped Turning)
by Alan Jackson
----
Where were you when the world stopped turning that September day
Out in the yard with your wife and children
Working on some stage in LA
Did you stand there in shock at the site of
That black smoke rising against that blue sky
Did you shout out in anger
In fear for your neighbor
Or did you just sit down and cry
Did you weep for the children
Who lost their dear loved ones
And pray for the ones who don't know
Did you rejoice for the people who walked from the rubble
And sob for the ones left below
Did you burst out in pride
For the red white and blue
The heroes who died just doing what they do
Did you look up to heaven for some kind of answer
And look at yourself to what really matters
I'm just a singer of simple songs
I'm not a real political man
I watch CNN but I'm not sure I can tell you
The difference in Iraq and Iran
But I know Jesus and I talk to God
And I remember this from when I was young
Faith hope and love are some good things he gave us
And the greatest is love
Where were you when the world stopped turning that September day
Teaching a class full of innocent children
Driving down some cold interstate
Did you feel guilty cause you're a survivor
In a crowded room did you feel alone
Did you call up your mother and tell her you love her
Did you dust off that bible at home
Did you open your eyes and hope it never happened
Close your eyes and not go to sleep
Did you notice the sunset the first time in ages
Speak with some stranger on the street
Did you lay down at night and think of tomorrow
Go out and buy you a gun
Did you turn off that violent old movie you're watching
And turn on "I Love Lucy" reruns
Did you go to a church and hold hands with some stranger
Stand in line and give your own blood
Did you just stay home and cling tight to your family
Thank God you had somebody to love
I'm just a singer of simple songs
I'm not a real political man
I watch CNN but I'm not sure I can tell you
The difference in Iraq and Iran
But I know Jesus and I talk to God
And I remember this from when I was young
