Most Americans Agree with Evolution [new poll]
Angus Reid Consultants ^ | 01 September 2006 | Staff

Posted on 08/31/2006 7:42:01 PM PDT by PatrickHenry

More adults in the United States believe the theory of evolution is correct, according to a poll by the Pew Research Center for the People and the Press. 51 per cent of respondents think that humans and other living things evolved over time, while 42 per cent say they existed in their present form since the beginning of time.

Charles Darwin’s "The Origin of Species" was first published in 1859. The book details the British naturalist’s theory that all organisms gradually evolve through the process of natural selection. Darwin’s views were antagonistic to creationism, the belief that a more powerful being or a deity created life.

In the United States, the debate on the topic accelerated after the 1925 Scopes trial, which tested a law that banned the teaching of evolution in Tennessee public schools. In 2004, Georgia’s Cobb County was at the centre of a controversy on whether science textbooks that explain evolutionary theory should include disclaimer stickers.

The theory of intelligent design suggests certain biological mechanisms are too complex to have developed without the involvement of a powerful force or intelligent being.

Last month, Austrian cardinal Christoph Schoenborn said the two views are not necessarily incompatible, declaring, "There is no conflict between science and religion, but a debate between a materialist interpretation of the results of science and a metaphysical philosophical interpretation. (...) The possibility that the Creator used evolution as a tool is completely acceptable for the Catholic faith."

I'm sure you can find whatever you wish to see in Newton's theological writings. If you find anything actually useful you could become famous. I wish you luck.

i remember reading the reaction of the scientist who figured out the three dimensional shape of a DNA strand. It was basicly a well organized blob. He said it was hard to not imagine the hand of God nudging things along.

Blowfish, you wrote: "And your demand for a single, universally-accepted version of 'TRUTH' (whatever that is) is doomed to go unfulfilled. It's in the eye of the beholder."

Funny thing, but that very issue came up on another thread this morning.

The Bible even states that some of heavens creatures started to have carnal relations with earthly women and things sort of got out of hand. The philistines were supposedly a product of this, thus the giant Goliath.

Well...   not exactly...

NIV Genesis 1:26-27
26.  Then God said, "Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth, and over all the creatures that move along the ground."
 27.  So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.

NIV Genesis 5:1-5
 1.  This is the written account of Adam's line.   When God created man, he made him in the likeness of God.
 2.  He created them male and female and blessed them. And when they were created, he called them "man. "
 3.  When Adam had lived 130 years, he had a son in his own likeness, in his own image; and he named him Seth.
 4.  After Seth was born, Adam lived 800 years and had other sons and daughters.
 5.  Altogether, Adam lived 930 years, and then he died.

NIV Genesis 6:1-8
 1.  When men began to increase in number on the earth and daughters were born to them,
 2.  the sons of God saw that the daughters of men were beautiful, and they married any of them they chose.
 3.  Then the LORD said, "My Spirit will not contend with  man forever, for he is mortal ; his days will be a hundred and twenty years."
 4.  The Nephilim were on the earth in those days--and also afterward--when the sons of God went to the daughters of men and had children by them. They were the heroes of old, men of renown.
 5.  The LORD saw how great man's wickedness on the earth had become, and that every inclination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil all the time.
 6.  The LORD was grieved that he had made man on the earth, and his heart was filled with pain.
 7.  So the LORD said, "I will wipe mankind, whom I have created, from the face of the earth--men and animals, and creatures that move along the ground, and birds of the air--for I am grieved that I have made them."
 8.  But Noah found favor in the eyes of the LORD.

This verse...

Genesis 6:4.  The Nephilim were on the earth in those days--and also afterward--when the sons of God went to the daughters of men and had children by them. They were the heroes of old, men of renown.

...says NOTHING about the N  being the OFFSPRING of the SoG and the DoM: they were ALREADY there!

SoG are the offspring from the early Adam/Eve lineage and the DoM are the offspring from the LATER Adam/Eve lineage, nothing more.

NIV Numbers 13:33
We saw the Nephilim there (the descendants of Anak come from the Nephilim). We seemed like grasshoppers in our own eyes, and we looked the same to them."

EVERYTHING got wiped by the flood: there was NO WAY for these supposed 'angelic' offspring to have survived to THIS point in time.

Topics: Nephi'lim

Text:  Gen. 6:4; Num. 13:33, R.V.), giants, the Hebrew word left untranslated by the Revisers, the name of one of the Canaanitish tribes. The Revisers have, however, translated the Hebrew gibborim, in Gen. 6:4, "mighty men."

NIV Jude 1:6
And the angels who did not keep their positions of authority but abandoned their own home--these he has kept in darkness, bound with everlasting chains for judgment on the great Day.

Nothing HERE about angels MATING with humans, either.

Tell me, what explanation do you have for reproduction, and what evidence have you to support the claim that reproduction did not "evolve"?

Eternal life is ZILLIONS of times easier to do than Reproduction.

Once alive, stay that way for ever.

How many times did life have to rise out off the soup - then die, until it said, "Damn! This is gettin' old! I want sum chillen!"

I am absolutely amazed that 42% of the population does not believe in evolution. Do you really think that everything that is alive on Earth has always been the same and were all created just as they are with no changes?

Some folks accept micro evolution but not macro evolution. The poll question apparently did not make that distinction—intentionally, I presume.

Also, Christians believe that God created Time before God created Man so the 'since the beginning of time' thing doesn't work for anyone.

We DO??

NIV 1 Corinthians 2:7
No, we speak of God's secret wisdom, a wisdom that has been hidden and that God destined for our glory before time began.

NIV 2 Timothy 1:8-10
 8.  So do not be ashamed to testify about our Lord, or ashamed of me his prisoner. But join with me in suffering for the gospel, by the power of God,
 9.  who has saved us and called us to a holy life--not because of anything we have done but because of his own purpose and grace. This grace was given us in Christ Jesus before the beginning of time,
 10.  but it has now been revealed through the appearing of our Savior, Christ Jesus, who has destroyed death and has brought life and immortality to light through the gospel.

NIV Titus 1:1-4
 1.  Paul, a servant of God and an apostle of Jesus Christ for the faith of God's elect and the knowledge of the truth that leads to godliness--
 2.  a faith and knowledge resting on the hope of eternal life, which God, who does not lie, promised before the beginning of time,
 3.  and at his appointed season he brought his word to light through the preaching entrusted to me by the command of God our Savior,
 4.  To Titus, my true son in our common faith:   Grace and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Savior.

Just how did these ignurt goat-herders have such a concept as 'before time' anyway???

NIV 1 Peter 1:17-21
 17.  Since you call on a Father who judges each man's work impartially, live your lives as strangers here in reverent fear.
 18.  For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your forefathers,
 19.  but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect.
 20.  He was chosen before the creation of the world, but was revealed in these last times for your sake.
 21.  Through him you believe in God, who raised him from the dead and glorified him, and so your faith and hope are in God.

Good research.
However, the destruction of the known world by water is well documented in the mediterranean area (King Gilgamesh/Plato) so that is not an issue. Now whether that meant all life on earth or all known, chosen tribe of God, is not is debatable.:

"The story of the Flood is a familiar one, as we shall see in Genesis and Popol Vuh (Plato also gives an account of the Flood and the city of Atlantis in the dialogue, Critias ; the Nez Perce of the Palouse also have a flood story in which the only humans that survived did so by climbing the mountain, Yamustus, that is, Steptoe Butte). The earliest surviving reference to the Flood goes back to 1900 B.C." http://www.wsu.edu/~dee/MESO/GILG.HTM

My point is evolution/creationism are not mutually exclusive. The key to enquiring human minds, is being open to where they are mutually supportive, a product of a graceful, forgiving God, that offers us eternity if we want it if we follow some basic tenets of his Son.
