Excerpt -

Super Typhoon Ioke, a Category 5 storm and the strongest to hit the Pacific in more than a decade, slammed into tiny Wake Island Thursday, threatening to submerge the U.S. territory, U.S. Navy weather forecasters said.

The storm, packing sustained winds of more than 220 mph, with some gusts topping 250 mph, came ashore at about 10 a.m. ET, and was slowly tracking west, gaining strength over the warm tropical waters, the Joint Typhoon Warning Center reported. Wake Island is located about 2,300 miles west of Honolulu.

'Monster' Typhoon Ioke Makes Direct Hit on Wake Island

Super Typhoon Ioke has made a direct hit on Wake Island, pounding the tiny U.S. Pacific territory with catastrophic winds of up to 300 kilometers an hour. Ioke is the strongest central Pacific typhoon in at least 12 years. Forecasters expect the "monster" storm to submerge Wake Island and destroy everything on it that is not made of concrete.

Wake is home to a U.S. Air Force base and a scientific outpost, roughly midway between Hawaii and Japan.

The eye of the typhoon skirted the north edge of the coral atoll Thursday. The U.S. Air Force had already evacuated all of the island's 188 residents to Hawaii, 3,700 kilometers across the Pacific.

The residents - Air Force personnel and American and Thai contractors - left Monday aboard two U.S. C-17 Globemaster planes. It was the first time the territory was evacuated in nearly 30 years.

Air Force to fly planes to check Wake Island damage after typhoon

HONOLULU (AP) _ The Air Force plans to fly planes over Wake Island after Typhoon Ioke passes to see how much damage the storm inflicted on the mid-Pacific U-S military refueling outpost.

Air Force planes evacuated all 200 of the island's residents on Monday in preparation for what forecasters are calling the most powerful central Pacific tropical storm in a decade.

Forecasters have predicted the storm would submerge the island and demolish any non-concrete structures.

That's the biggest pounding Wake island's taken since Hurricane George Hebert Walker Bush clubbed it with explosives back in '43.

Actually, that is probably correct.

Went through Wake several times during my tour at Hq Pacific Air Forces at Hickam AFB April 69-August 72. One of my neighbors at Wheeler AFB took his wife to Wake for a two week vacation in 1971--said that they had the beach and the lagoon all to themselves.

I was there once in the 60's. It seemed the whole island was no more than 4 foot above sea level.
I'm assuming I must have been there during high tide.
