Tropical Storm Ernesto leaves Florida and heads for the Carolinas
NWS/NHC ^ | 30 August 2006 | NHC

Posted on 08/30/2006 6:30:12 PM PDT by NautiNurse

Ernesto is poised to emerge into Atlantic waters after feebly creeping along the Florida peninsula. Media pundits with tremulous cameras dotted Florida's extensive coastline for the past 24 hours, showing video of children playing in the sand, dark skies, and occasional rain.

Tropical Storm Warnings are in effect from Sebastian Inlet Florida to Cape Lookout North Carolina, as Ernesto moves north at 15mph. The storm's intensity and forecast track has puzzled forecasters for several days.

N.C. Governor Mike Easley and S.C. Governor Mark Sanford activated the National Guard today in their respective states, as the forecast track indicated Ernesto may regain tropical storm force winds, and make landfall again along the Carolinas coastline.

Please use common sense when posting graphics--keeping in mind there are FReepers who use dial-up access to the internet, and many have java limitations (e.g. satellite loops). In other words--links are better than posting the graphics.

From that three day track it looks like up here in Pittsburgh we will get some much needed rain.

However, here's hoping no one in other locals get much more than they wish.

We'll see what it might do in the Carolinas and north, but it's been the best possible outcome for Florida.

Sitrep: the dadgum thing waited until it went over land to start actually looking like a dang tropical depression.

The weather over much of Florida is worse now than it was at landfall, but nothing all that horrible.

Forecasters are telling people in the mid-Atlantic to start building arks.

Joe Bastardi is predicting a Cat 7 landfall in South Carolina.

While we are always very grateful to avoid weather mayhem, a lot of government employees got a day off, the primary election early voting was suspended--and I suspect a few won't heed warnings when a bigger storm threatens next time.

the winds may not be strong, but the floods due to the excessive rain may come here in the DC and surrounding areas regardless. Hoping for the best.

Well, the driveway isn't even completely wet at this point, so I'm taking a wait and see attittude.

(I do have an axe in the attic, though; just in case.)

Carolina refugees I might handle, although we seem to have a blood feud on which way to cook BBQ. Pennsylvania and Joisey refugees are a different problem altogether.

I actually tried shoo fly pie, and I was out of intensive care within months.
