FALLON NAVAL AIR STATION, Nev. - Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld said Monday he is deeply troubled by the success of terrorist groups in "manipulating the media" to influence Westerners.

"That's the thing that keeps me up at night," he said during a question-and-answer session with about 200 naval aviators and other Navy personnel at this flight training base for Navy and Marine pilots.

So here we are a great nation with lots of communication technology and we're losing the hearts and minds of our own people. One must wonder in amazement that they identify the problem and yet, seem so utterly incompetent to do anything about. We here on FreeRepublic uncover the faux photos etc., but where else do we here about such matters? Very infrequently in the MSM.

I really like Rumsfeld, but I think that the stress of the enormous job that he is faced with every day and his age are taking their toll on him. May be time to bring someone fresh in.

Complaining about media bias is an effective way to defang any genuine media criticism by poisoning the well. Rumsfeld knows what he's doing, and we're worse off for it.

Class action suit.

I have been materially damaged by the New York Times, NBC, and CBS. I want every nickle they have, and then some.

Let's roll.

"Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld said Monday he is deeply troubled by the success of terrorist groups in "manipulating the media" to influence Westerners."

OPINION: He's right-on-target.

Let's take a look at a couple of links on Michelle Malkin's blog
to see what's real and what's not in the media.

Here's something interesting:

Going off topic a tad bit to look at how the internet is used.

Talking points
• There is no "internet jihad".

There are jihadis who use the internet. The internet is just another territory, another area of operations, another front in a global war.

The Internet is the home front of the global jihad.

• The most important thing that the internet does for the global jihad is it provides community.

Maybe 20% of what jihadis say online has some interest from an analytical or investigative point of view.

The 80% that doesn't interest *us* is the mindless chit chat that builds bonds. It solidifies the individual jihadi's sense of identity with the global movement and it holds the global movement together and keeps it moving forwards.

• Jihadis act locally and interact globally.

This global interaction has the effect of cutting the jihadis off from their own local Muslim community and turning them towards the objectives of the global jihad, as opposed to any local struggle. This fuels the process of radicalization.

"...deeply troubled by the success of terrorist groups in 'manipulating the media' to influence Westerners."

No doubt about it, Don. The real problem is the terrorists' useful idiots, enablers, and willing accomplices in the "media". Yes, it's high time we did question their patriotism--and their intelligence and their sanity.

They're not only manipulating the media. They're also using our own laws against us with the help of groups such as the ACLU and CAIR. The guy who said "Freedom isn't Free" wasn't BSing.

May be time to bring someone fresh in.

I thought the same thing when I read his quote about media manipulation. While I applaud Rumsfeld's efforts to bring the military into the 21st century and his efforts to streamline the Pentagon, there is nothing new about the manipulation of the media.

Instead of just complaining about media bias, why doesn't the administration call press conferences where it directly exposes that bias? If we could do it here on FR, the administration certainly has far greater resources that could be devoted to the same thing.

Shortly following the creation of the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt in 1928 the organization set up a communications bureau. It first studied the Europe of the nineteen thirties and following Hitler's lead began to use radio to disseminate propaganda. From that time on the Brotherhood, whether Egyptian or another chapter, has studied the use of the media. It bought radio stations, book publishing houses and opened book stores. In places like the Sudan students were sent to Universities in the United States to study communications (a major conference of such students was held at Georgetown in 1988). Yusuf al-Qardawi, the Egyptian sheikh and Muslim Brotherhood advisor who found a home in Qatar, is really the godfather of Al Jazeera and many other Middle East media outlets.

I understood that since Tony Snow came in the WH press office has been firing off e-mails pointing out false reports in the media. Trouble is those don't get printed anywhere. I believe they go directly to the offending media outlets. The WH should put them on the official website (at least).

The REAL reason why the insurgency started in Iraq and has grown is media support. The show of division in American commitment (Dems and USA media fed) and pumping up the hopes of opposition that if they just hang on, USA will chicken out and walk away. Trouble is, Bush, Rummy, Condi, Cheney et al will not say that. They fear the fall-out.

No way Rummy should ever resign. It would validate all the crap, and give media a field day in attempt to confirm someone to finish out through 2008.

do you disagree with his point? What about this statement makes you think he is too old or stressed from this job? The statement is spot on, and he's one of only a few in this administration that challenges that bias. Bush rarely does. Rumsfeld always stays on the offensive...something I respect highly.

Cancel all newspaper and magazine subscriptions. Kill your TV. There is no need to read or listen to the daily stream of rubbish from the media. It's about the same idea as listening to a Democrat's opinion, about anything.

There may be nothing new, but the effect remains, i.e., the MSM is undermining our efforts in Iraq by aiding the enemy and distorting the facts on the ground.

Rumsfeld is just expressing the frustrations of his generals. Read this one: A General Fed Up With The MSM

You've got it. The thing they don't really seem to understand is that the fall-out is already there and terribly hurting them. If they shot back, the MSM wouldn't have that much more to throw at them. I'd really love to see Tony give a press conference with visual back-up showing how well the Hezzies played the media, instead of just whining about media bias and not documenting it.
