Kentucky's Attorney General has been pursuing an investigation of Gov. Ernie Fletcher (R) since last year; in May, he finally won an indictment charging political favoritism in Fletcher's administration. Today, he got bad news. From the AP:
A judge on Thursday dismissed charges against Kentucky Gov. Ernie Fletcher that had accused him of breaking state law by basing personnel decisions on political considerations. A lawyer for the Republican governor had been negotiating a settlement to the misdemeanor charges for the past two days, Democratic state Attorney General Greg Stumbo said Thursday.
The special judge assigned to the case, David E. Melcher, dismissed the charges Thursday with prejudice, meaning they can't be brought again.
As a KY lady I am not fond of Fletcher .. I worked for him and supported him... He just isn't what I thought he became But the Demo's went after him with both barrells after all these years.. He will be defeated in the next election for sure.. Just wish we had another Repub to run!!!!
I am not familiar with KY politics so I have no comment on the governor. But I have a few questions. Are you implying that conservative Christians aren't generous or are you saying you don't like where they put their money? Do you have any idea how much money flows out of churches to the third world to provide food, medicines, buildings and clothing?
Liberals are rather skimpy when it comes to giving to charities (unless they are donating to a foundation and getting it broadcast in the news). For example, when Kathleen Brown ran for governor, her taxes were revealed. Her annual charitable donation was about $200 and she was NOT a poor woman, quite the opposite. They abdicate their own responsibility and want the govt to fix people's problems -- substance abuse, poverty, etc. Churches reach out to offer recovery services/workshops, elderly care, child care, pays utility & rent bills, loans cars, etc. Teenagers that attend church regularly have a fraction of the rate of depression, suicide, STDs, etc. The list goes on.
Someone on this site could find Pres Clinton's, VP Gore, Senator Clinton's charitable giving vs Pres Bush's. I'd like to see it posted.
But we are living in a society that no longer knows about Joshua or Hannah or Miriam or Ahab. "Heaven and earth will pass away but.....".
There are always exceptions, but a family of mine who are mostly west coast liberals, make hefty charitable donations. I managed to end up in Texas where a found a church that was very accepting and graceful.
I beg to differ with you. In fact, you must be kidding when you use a vulgar term to discribe the "religious right" 's response to Katrina..
Our church, well over 1,500 miles away has had a continuous team of members down there, helping to clean up and rebuild. A member of my family just returned after volunteering his whole summer down there. We have a special fund in our offering for helping the Katrina victims. We are working with a local, sister church in that area -- through proper channels. In our city, other churches are doing the same and we are 10 states away from LA & MS. I am confident we are not the only city with churches that are reaching out to Katrina victims.
What happened to you and your family? Where were you living?

Then in this post you said that your church was the opposite -- "superficial" -- and that you took in a family. Sorry but I'm confused by your posts. Are you from the Katrina area or are you a native of Texas?
I am living in the DFW area. It was a collaberative effort among area churches. Mine only has 75-80 regular members. It was the larger ones that delayed and confused the planned response.

i would guess atty gen stumbo, rep. chandler and one or two members of the state legislature... but that's just a guess/ knowing a little bt about kentucky, i think i can say that most of the voters there understand what this is all about and will be rather forgiving.
