LONDON (UPI) -- The Boomerang cartoon TV network is editing some scenes from classic "Tom and Jerry" cartoons where the cat and mouse are smoking cigarettes.
The decision was announced after British media watchdog, Ofcom, investigated a viewer's complaint that the cartoons from the 1940s and 1050s were not appropriate for young viewers, the BBC reported Monday.
Boomerang will only edit the cartoons where smoking appears to be "condoned, acceptable or glamorized," the BBC said.
"We note that in Tom and Jerry smoking usually appears in a stylized manner," Ofcom said in a statement.
However, it said, "the level of editorial justification required for the inclusion of smoking in such cartoons is necessarily high."

Have you ever been to the dollar stores that sell the old cartoons. They are put out by Digivision. They are also at Wal-mart. They are so un-pc. There was a sing-a-long that had some of the birds very, very drunk.

Are they going to edit out when Tom gets his a$$ kicked by Jerry?

By the time the cartoon nazi's are done, there'll be no smoking, drinking (bottles labeled xxx), cartoon cursing ((#*$#!), fighting, foghorn teasing the dog, elmer shooting or anything else we associate with cartoons.
Tom and jerry will just stand there staring at each other because there's nothing else to do. I'm sure we'llfind it hilarious, but not at all like we did growing up with it.
Actually, in the movie supernova, the captain of the ship was doing his doctoral disertation on violence in cartoons and a notable sound clip at the start is "when cartoons were outlawed in 20xx for their violent content".
it's coming. just watch

Tom and jerry will just stand there staring at each other because there's nothing else to do. Some cartoons like Family Guy already think long silences are hilarious long after they've outlived their humour value.

It's not in my nature, even as an anime fan, to watch shows like Monster Ranchers. However, at one point I did, and even though I'd never seen it before (original Japanese run or otherwise), it was pretty glaringly obvious that this one guy who had a toothpick the size of a cigarette in his mouth ... well.

Up next: the numerous scenes where Tom, Jerry or someone else is drunk. Let's all celebrate with a glass of frothy brown water!

I don't even watch cartoons anymore. And i really feel for todays kids growing up with the crap they are trying to pass off as 'cartoons' on saturday morning.
haven't watched the trash on Cartoon network in ages. Don't watch that famly guy crap. More importantly, i don't let the kids watch it either.
Got afew of the looney toons collections and another bunch run outon tape that we watch regularly.
I remember space ghost and sinbad and whacky races and the herculoids and all the other neet cartoons from when I was a kiddo and despair over what passes for cartoons nowadays.
Cheapest trash that can be produced.

Last year I attended a play here in politically correct San Francisco. During the scenes that called for the characters to smoke, the actors
pretended they were smoking. They didn't even use unlighted cigarettes. Just went through the motions.
It was the stupidest thing I've seen in a long time.

Once in awhile, I'll make a run through the kiddie fare on CN to see if anything can be salvaged. I did find Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends after awhile, and honestly it's one of the better things I've seen in awhile. Occasionally you'll find something, like back when we still had Pinky and the Brain.

In other news, while underage smoking has decreased, there has been a huge increase in children dropping anvils on each other.

Oh, come on. A friend with freakin' asthma uses an unlit (real) cigarette as a prop for a costume on a regular basis. Walking around. And these guys don't even have the guts to use a fake?
Wonder what woulda happened if the scenes called for smoking pot or doing lines.

Bye Bye Hitler, Tojo, Mammy, and now Smoking. Thank goodness the thought police are there to protect my children, rather than letting me inform them of the history of our culture and why things changed. Many in our society would appear to prefer changing history, rather than learning from it.
In effect, the same people who insist on re-editing Tom & Jerry cartoons would engage in airbrushing photos of the reviewing stands at the Kremlin.

Can't offend anyone, you know. Providing a "scent-free environent" is the latest thing.
Just the sight of a cigarette sends the smoke nazis into apoplexy.

I guess they are going to have to edit out the "Zoot Suit" episode as well, which is one of my favorites.
(Tom talking with a smooth French accent) "When I'm with you, I'm what you call a "hep cat." I'm hip to the jive.....Ah you set my soul on fire, it is not just a spark, but a flame. A big roaring flame, I can feel it burning....burning..."
(Jerry lights a bunch of matches around Tom's feet)
* sniff * * sniff *
"Hey, something is burning in here."

cartoons are the only things worth watching. sure beats wasting your life staring at another law and order clone.
south park, king of the hill, aquateen hungerforce, venture brothers, family guy, etc. these shows represent the only original thinking i see on television.

One of my favorite episodes of my favorite cartoon!
Is you is or is you ain't my baby
Maybe baby's found somebody new...
My other favorites have all but disappeared, although I still catch the Baby Tom/Castor Oil episode once in a while. :-D
