President Bush Approves Over the Counter Early Abortion Pill, Pro-Life Base Decries Move

By John-Henry Westen

WASHINGTON, August 21, 2006 (LifeSiteNews.com) - For his pro-life supporter base, President George W. Bush stepped into one of the biggest political landmines of his Presidential career today with his approval of over the counter status for the abortion-causing morning after pill Plan B.

A press release by Human Life International underscored the seriousness of the move as it was titled, "President Bush Files for Divorce with Catholic Base." Rev. Thomas J. Euteneuer, president of Human Life International commented, "President Bush's implied support for the abortion-causing drug Plan B is completely inconsistent with his recent veto of the embryonic stem cell research (ESCR) funding bill. What the president apparently fails to realize is that Plan B kills the same innocent unborn children that the ESCR process does."

At a White House press conference this morning, the President was asked by Bill Sammon a reporter from the Washington Examiner about Plan B and his new FDA commissioner who supports its over the counter status. "Mr. President, some pro-life groups are worried that your choice of FDA Commissioner will approve over the counter sales of Plan B, a pill that, they say, essentially can cause early-term abortions," said the reporter. "Do you stand by this choice, and how do you feel about Plan B in general?"

The President replied, "I believe that Plan B ought to be -- ought to require a prescription for minors, is what I believe. And I support Andy's decision."

Andy, as the President referred to him, is the new Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Commissioner Andrew von Eschenbach. Pro-life groups last week called for von Eschenbach's resignation over his deal with a drug company to make a high-dose of a drug (Plan B, a morning-after pill) available without a prescription to women 18 year of age and older.

Concerned Women for America (CWA) blasted the decision noting that it is ludicrous to allow Plan B without medical supervision when a low-dose of the same drug (birth control pills) requires medical oversight to protect women from serious health complications.

"It is deplorable that the head of the FDA would put his career ambitions and a drug company's interests above women's health," said Wendy Wright, CWA's President. "CWA provided legal and regulatory evidence that the FDA does not have the authority to do what it is proposing and medical evidence that any dose of the drug requires medical oversight to protect women's health. The drug is known to cause serious complications such as blood clots and stroke."

Rev. Euteneuer added, "The president must demonstrate a consistent respect for the sanctity of all human life or he risks provoking a great divorce with the conservative Catholics that compromise a large part of his support base. Human beings in the embryonic stage of development deserve equal protection under the law and the president's position falls far short of that mark."

It is not the reverend that has offended the Catholic Conservative base that elected George W Bush. George Bush is the one who has alienated pro-lifers with integrity.
If the president came out for an assualt weapons ban how would you expect the NRA to respond? And when they attacked the president would you tell them to shut up and be thankful they got two judges. If the president announced he was for national health care would you tell the Cato crowd to be quite and stay focused on the WOT. The good rev is the head of a catholic pro life group... it is his job to stand up for the values of his organization

You ready to stand by that 'conception never does occur' with Plan B? It doesn't help to go over the top, to an untenable assertion like that one.

What the president apparently fails to realize is that Plan B kills the same innocent unborn children that the ESCR process does."

Actually I believe he does realize this. It must have been a very hard decision to make having to choose the lesser of two evils.

The lesser? Potentially, it isn't. The primary source of embryos for ESCR is fertility clinics. There are hundreds of thousands of embryos in cryogenic storage at these clinics. Only a few of these are made available for ECSR at any time. Plan B, on the other hand, if it is widely-available, could kill MILLIONS of embroynic lives.

Today's "conservative" womyn on the other hand subscribe to the conservative principles of hedonism and the consequence-free world. Welcome to the 1960's.

ROFL. What utter tripe. I have to feel sorry for the women in your life.

Uh, maybe because the little word "may" is in there. Just like if you read the side effects of aspirin, it MAY cause death. You 1% will never have a president who is so opposed to abortion, but please, keep whining. It tells us so much about you and none of it is good.

This pill, by preventing pregnancy and "possibly" being an abortion, could help prevent future actual abortions.

I'll take it.

Since the pill "may" prevent implantation you feel it's acceptable to say the following.

You do understand that this pill isn't the morning after pill and that with this pill, conception never does occur, don't you?

That kind of statement, or should I say falsehood, says a lot more about you than my position does about me.

Only the first and last sentence of your post are germane to the fact of what the reverend said and the fact that President Bush is a man of integrity and made a decision based on his convictions of what would be best for the public he serves. And, I disagree with you that the Catholic conservative base elected Pres. Bush. They, along with scads of other self interested groups and millions of just plain good American citizens, got George Bush elected. Who does the Catholic Conservative base that you refer to have in mind to vote for in October? A person who can win and hold the line on abortion, or a non winnable person who will represent only them and none other of voters in their district/state? President Bush is the best friend in public office that pro lifers have and he should get thanks, appreciation, and support from all of us.

No. I don't. But,...

You do understand that this pill work AFTER conception has occurred, don't you?

"If the threat of terrorism is serious enough to be called a "war" then those opposing it are "traitors", not "good decent people" or "patriotic Americans" as the president said today."

One of the mst absurd statements I've ever seen.

Exactly right. These are all abortion pills. And also, how can we say we oppose gay marriage, talking about the procreative nature of marriage and what it gives to society, when heterosexual couples refuse to have children and refuse to embrace the procreative aspect of sex?

This president gets criticized by the left and the far right and I'm pretty sick of it.

The president gets criticized by pro-lifers when he deserves it. For this, he deserves it. Plan-B is an abortifacient. There's no two-ways about it. This decision makes his prior decision on embryonic stem-cell research look incoherent.

Truly a stupid and immoral position on his part.

And young girls who are raped, which happens every day in this country, should what?

How do you like your red herring, anyway? If an embryo is a human life, it's wrong to kill it. Do you believe that an embryo is a human life?

He's being completely inconsistent. If killing an embryo for stem cell research is not allowed, neither should killing a baby a few hours after conception- no matter how old the mother is. Bad bad decision.

AGREED!!!!!!!!!

We agree on the WOT. We may get attacked tomorrow. Why not focus on that?

If corruption continues to decay from Within THE USA, God Himself will allow a attack no matter how much we try and stop it. !! There is someone bigger that YOU OR I in control of the affairs of man.

What I know is that I'm delighted to stand with the president on this issue. He's the most pro life president we've ever had or probably will ever have.

And I think I'll say an extra prayer of gratitude this week in church that people like you have no control over women in the United States regarding this issue.
