President Bush Approves Over the Counter Early Abortion Pill, Pro-Life Base Decries Move

By John-Henry Westen

WASHINGTON, August 21, 2006 (LifeSiteNews.com) - For his pro-life supporter base, President George W. Bush stepped into one of the biggest political landmines of his Presidential career today with his approval of over the counter status for the abortion-causing morning after pill Plan B.

A press release by Human Life International underscored the seriousness of the move as it was titled, "President Bush Files for Divorce with Catholic Base." Rev. Thomas J. Euteneuer, president of Human Life International commented, "President Bush's implied support for the abortion-causing drug Plan B is completely inconsistent with his recent veto of the embryonic stem cell research (ESCR) funding bill. What the president apparently fails to realize is that Plan B kills the same innocent unborn children that the ESCR process does."

At a White House press conference this morning, the President was asked by Bill Sammon a reporter from the Washington Examiner about Plan B and his new FDA commissioner who supports its over the counter status. "Mr. President, some pro-life groups are worried that your choice of FDA Commissioner will approve over the counter sales of Plan B, a pill that, they say, essentially can cause early-term abortions," said the reporter. "Do you stand by this choice, and how do you feel about Plan B in general?"

The President replied, "I believe that Plan B ought to be -- ought to require a prescription for minors, is what I believe. And I support Andy's decision."

Andy, as the President referred to him, is the new Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Commissioner Andrew von Eschenbach. Pro-life groups last week called for von Eschenbach's resignation over his deal with a drug company to make a high-dose of a drug (Plan B, a morning-after pill) available without a prescription to women 18 year of age and older.

Concerned Women for America (CWA) blasted the decision noting that it is ludicrous to allow Plan B without medical supervision when a low-dose of the same drug (birth control pills) requires medical oversight to protect women from serious health complications.

"It is deplorable that the head of the FDA would put his career ambitions and a drug company's interests above women's health," said Wendy Wright, CWA's President. "CWA provided legal and regulatory evidence that the FDA does not have the authority to do what it is proposing and medical evidence that any dose of the drug requires medical oversight to protect women's health. The drug is known to cause serious complications such as blood clots and stroke."

Rev. Euteneuer added, "The president must demonstrate a consistent respect for the sanctity of all human life or he risks provoking a great divorce with the conservative Catholics that compromise a large part of his support base. Human beings in the embryonic stage of development deserve equal protection under the law and the president's position falls far short of that mark."

If the threat of terrorism is serious enough to be called a "war" then those opposing it are "traitors", not "good decent people" or "patriotic Americans" as the president said today.

FDR without naming names came down hard on Charles Lindbergh for his opposition to fighting the Nazis gladly accepting his resignation of his commission as an officer because of U.S. support for the Allies before World War II even officially began.

Please elaborate.

I for one do not want to take a pill that makes me more prone to weight gain, more moody, more prone to serious depression, lower my sex drive, raise my risk of stroke, raise my risk of cancer, raise my risk of serious blood clots, aborts my children when they are most defenseless just so my body will not work the way nature created it to work.

Not such an absurd position.

I am against any "contraceptive" that acts as an abortaficiant. The pill does create a hostile environment within the womb which causes a miscarriage. Most hormonal contraceptives do not prevent conception in every case, and they make sure to cause an abortion if a child is conceived by mistake. This ends a newly created human life and is morally unacceptable to me.

RU 486 destroys a normally progressing preganancy, whereas the pill never allows the pregnancy to develop normally.

Both destroy human life.

I do. It is the only consistent, fully life affirming position.

>>It essentially prevents pregnancy by preventing implantation during a specific time frame, as I understand the science.

This is not science but quackery.

Pregnancy begins at fertilization, not implantation. Most top selling medical dictinaries define it as either beginning at fertilization or just after (which is a few days prior to implantation).

Preventing implantation is an abortion, and you don't prevent or reduce abortion with earlier abortion.

The links below deals with this issue in depth, and examines how the abortion rights movement has tried to redefine pregnancy and conception in order to be able to say preventing implantation is not an abortion:

Just look at the information from this natural planning information website:
http://www.woomb.org/bom/science/physiology.html
See Figure 1
In fact, we give progesterone to protect early pregnancies. In natural cycles, progesterone increases after ovulation.

People who oppose the war are not traitors. There's always opposition to any war. There are plenty of "good, decent people" who are opposed to this war. I think they're wrong but nonetheless, that's their opinion. It doesn't make them traitors.

Anybody want to join me?

We agree on the WOT. We may get attacked tomorrow. Why not focus on that?

We do? It's another abstract war, like the war on poverty that has no endgame in sight and never will. If that's your position, THEN we agree.

People who oppose the war are traitors because of their use of the MSM for propaganda purposes in order to aid the enemy and prove themselves right at any cost while putting us all at risk.

The MSM is perfectly capable of being traitorous without the assistance of the general population. Not to mention the fact that this really has nothing to do with the thread we're on.

The MSM can only be successful traitors if they have at least some public supporters with them and you're right it has nothing to do with the forum we're on.

There are still people around the oppose birth control pills? Amazing! Boggles my mind but explains the comeback. Don't you love it when a guy opposes birth control?

Yes. They're called practicing Catholics. In fact, up until the 1930's ALL traditional Christian churches regarded birth control as bad. But then they, like you, got Liberalism. And ye shall know the Pill, and the Pill shall set you free! (o Brave New World that has such people in it...). But if it makes you feel any better, my wife feels the same way. We subscribe to the old belief that it takes two to tango. But hey I guess this is the state of "conservatism" in America in the 21st century.

The manufacturer of Plan B on its own website explicitly states that the pill may act to prevent implantation after conception has occurred. Yet, you continue to claim this pill acts only as a contraceptive. Again, why?

Because only the "mentally unstable male, Muslim Mullahs here on FR can understand your post #132 Garv! Sarcasm off!

BTW, thanks for finding that information which has been conveniently ignored by some.

I need to find some sanity on this thread because otherwise I'm going to be convinced I'm reading posts directly from Tehran.

That's funny, I feel like we have infiltraters from the National Organization of Women. Is this a Gloria Steinem lovefest or what?

And am proud to stand with the president on this matter who has scientists and researchers who are just a TAD more knowledgeable than the kind of Neanderthals we're seeing on this thread. But thanks anyway for your suggestions.

Ah the appeal to authority,-even as you decry authoritarianism. Neanderthals didn't subscribe to the right to the sexual mores of a house of ill repute, they had more sense, I suspect, than that. Today's "conservative" womyn on the other hand subscribe to the conservative principles of hedonism and the consequence-free world. Welcome to the 1960's.

Yes, in wartime some people have moral convictions against war that may be legalistic but are sincere.

But FDR showed little mercy to naysayers in the 1940's. The media and Hollywood were fully behind him and trashed isolationists who didn't want World War II.

Back to now, I'm sorry but some people in powerful positions in this country (Congress members like Conyers, Shelia Jackson-Lee) not to mention Cindy Sheehan and other anti-war fanatics are Marxists who want to take this country down. Add to that other terrorist sympathizers like the Council on American Islamic Relations and you've got traitors.

CAIR is to Islamofascism what the National Lawyers Guild was to the Communist Party USA in the 1940's. A front for people who want to destroy America.

No problem, I had that link from a thread a few weeks ago.

While I disagree with supporters of Plan B, I'm not trying to change their minds. I just want them to tell the truth.
