Countries that send troops to be a part of the United Nations international force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) must recognize the Jewish state, Israel's United Nations Ambassador Danny Gillerman told the British Broadcasting Corp. (BBC) Friday.
He said it is not comprehensible to allow the participation of countries such as Malaysia and Indonesia, who have offered to send 1,000 soldiers each and who do not have diplomatic ties with Israel. Last week, Malaysia encouraged other countries to cut off relations with Jerusalem.
Losers can't be choosers.
Israel is painting a portrait of the UN that will be very difficult to ignore. Look at the stinkin' French - driving the cease-fire process and then weaseling out on providing troops. Now the UN wants to put troops on the border of Israel that do not even recognize the existence of a member state they are supposed to defend.
It is everything we on FR predicted of this cease-fire - but sometimes you have to let the process completely discredit itself. That IMO is what is happening here. We'll see what plays out from that.
Israel's request is just plain common sense. That's why it will be like oil and water to the U.N. Or maybe food for oil.
This is interesting. It's a demand but needn't come to anything unless the UN comes to its senses.
This is all so pointless. I still don't understand how Condi & Bolton could agree to this sham.
There are people "policing" the Hezzies who think the Hezzies should OWN Israel? Do I have this straight?
"I still don't understand how Condi & Bolton could agree to this sham."
Maybe they were under the mistaken impression Israel was "going to the Litani" and cleaning out Hezb. from the area peacekeepers and the Leb army was to occupy.
Wasn't everyone?
Why should the UN do what Israel didn't? They thought the UN "peacekeepers" would fight Hezb.? They thought the UN would deploy in a region networked with Hezb. fighters?
Hezbollah/Syria/Lebanon rejected any French personnel a few weeks ago, so France and the US offered an amended resolution not mentioning France or any nation. Then after Lebanon signed-off on the resolution the French were mentioned again. No means no.
Here is what I think happened. The Saudi Royal Family told the Bush Admin that popular support for Hiz was threatening their rule. And a cease fire had to be implemented no matter what.
Now, what comes next is wide open. It was VERY interesting that the intitial criticisms from the Saudis were against Hiz, not Israel. I have a feeling that Hiz will be chipped away at in a very subtle manner from here on out.
And the UN will tell Israel to shove it.
Israel will do nothing in return.
Israel doesn't have a right to exist--no country does. There is no super-national governing and/or authenticating body that specifices that certain states have a right to exist and other states do not. All states come about in the same way. A stronger force comes along and throws out the inhabitants of some weaker state. That's the way it's always been. The "right to exist" has nothing to do with it. If Israel remains stronger than her neighbors she will continue to exist. If they become stronger than her, she will not. I wish people would quit focusing on "rights." Rights have nothing to do with whether or not a state survies.
Reread my post..
NOWHERE do I discuss the RIGHT to exist..
I question an Organization, the U.N. - allowing one or more member states taking a position that another member state -- one CREATED BY ACTION OF THE U.N. -- does not exist.
Many Islamic states refuse to acknowledge the legitimate existence of Israel..
That is quite different from the Muslim nations preaching a dogma that requires the destruction of a fellow member state...
Do you not find that a bit insane?
It is my belief that nations should not be admitted to the U.N. who refuse to acknowledge the FACT that Israel is a U.N. created/recognized State.
Semper Fi
Just get on with it, and wipe Hamas out
Eventualy Israel will have to take out the UN. At this point they deserve it. Though I am sure the world will then stand against Israel, Israel will be in the right.
The entire premise of a peacekeeping force is nonsense. it doesn't matter where the troops come from, Malaysia, France, Germany, Japan, Russia...whatever. If these troops are neither authorized or willing to fire on the Hezzies as the terrorists drive past them positions on the way to rocket Israel, then why bother?
