Resilient Red Sox just won't go away
MSNBC.com ^ | 8/17/06 | Ron Borges

It's now or never for the New York Yankees.

The Yankees open a five-game series at Fenway Park on Friday with their alter egos in the American League East, the Boston Red Sox. Just 1 1/2 games will separate the two teams when that series begins.

Since the All-Star break, the Sox have slipped considerably, going 16-17 with problems surfacing with their starting pitching, relief corps and hitting (with the exception of David Ortiz and Manny Ramirez). The Yankees, meanwhile, seem to have righted themselves after a long year of struggles with injuries and under-producing pitchers such as Randy Johnson. New York has gone 20-12 since the break to move past Boston into first place, a five-game reversal in 31 games.

Yet even with the additions of Bobby Abreu and Cory Lidle and the improved pitching of Johnson, the Yankees won't separate themselves from the Red Sox if they don't make a move during this series, because Boston may be the most resilient team in the American League, if not in all of baseball. ...

For all the Red Sox difficulties of late, especially with their pitching, they could be tied for the division lead by Saturday morning if everything goes right and if they continue to play at home the way they have thus far.

That would give the Red Sox the advantage in the series and for the rest of the season. They would have their top three pitchers — Josh Beckett, Curt Schilling and David Wells — going in the final three games against the Yankees, with a chance to turn the tables on them just when much of the world felt New York was ready to assert itself and pull away.

How could Ortiz be the MVP? He doesn't even play the field?

So he's got at least 20 less errors than Arod!

How many walk off wins does Gay-Rod have for his troubles?

Oh, and what is he up to, 20 Errors so far this year?

My point exactly. The Red Sox will be living off of the 2004 comeback win for eternity. The fact they have one ONE world championship since 1918 doesn't seem to enter into their thinking. Meanwhile the Yankees have lost their 2 top offensive players in Matsui and Sheffield, Arod is hitting only .285 and their pitching for the most part has been cobbled together.

Even with all that they STILL are 2 games up.

Without a doubt, this is most definitely worse:

Hardly . . .

Face it, man. The Yankees are the proud owners of the worst collapse in sports history. Even after dropping the Dave Roberts game, all you clowns had to do was win one more---but you went 0-3.

Friday: Garcia vs Bonser.
Saturday: Garland vs Radke.
Sunday: Vazquez vs Santana.

Twins should be able to take 2 out of 3.

....the fact that GayRod sucks....BINGO! The Yanks three biggest guns - two are on DL, the third is shooting blanks and playing D that would get him thrown off a college team. It's a MIRACLE the Yanks are doing as well as they are.

Head to head, the White Sox have still dominated the Tigers and there are still 6 more regular season games to play.

Yeah, keep re-living that while we win this year.

As long as Hitlery's in office, and GayRod is on the roster, the Yanks will not win the World Series.

Sports writers who watch Ortiz sit on the bench but for about 5 minutes each night.
OK, you New Englanders bore me and Rush is on.
I'll write you again after we take the series in Beantown.

The Sox's troubles can be traced to bad ownership, not the players. Tom Yawkee was a racist who refused to sign Jackie Robinson and Willie Mays. He surrounded himself with his drinking buddies and yes men. Could you imagine if the Sox had had Robinson, Mays and Williams playing for them?

The Yankees put together a great run over the last ten years that is unlikely to be duplicated for years to come. I have a lot of respect for Brian Cashman and Joe Torre for what they have managed to accomplish.

Steinbrenner sucks though.

Nah, The Red Sox are still cursed, in 2004 they were just lucky enough to run into 2 more powerful curses. The Keith Hernandez curse and the Hillary curse

">The Hillary Curse

Oct 2000.. . .The Yanks last won a World Series defeating the New York Mets in five games.

Nov. 2000....New York elects Hillary Clinton, an Illinois native who declares herself "A lifelong Yankees fan," to the Senate.

Since then it's been a series of disappointments:

2001: The usually reliable Mariano Rivera gets roughed up in the 9th inning of game 7 and the Yankees lose the World Series to Arizona Diamondbacks.

2002: An 8 run 5th inning finishes the Yankees as they Lose the Division Series to Anaheim Angels in four.

2003: Lost World Series to Florida Marlins in six in which the Marlins become the first opposing team to win the World Series at Yankee Stadium since 1981.

2004: In the biggest choke in sports history, After being up 3-0, the Yankees lose the next four and lose the Championship Series to Red Sox in seven.

2005: Yankees bat 0.194 with runners in scoring position and lose Division Series to Anaheim Angels in five.

If the Hillary curse doesn't effect the Mets also, then it doesn't matter if the Red Sox beat the Skanks because it will be a repeat of

Sports writers

PRECISELY . . . the same ink-stained wretches who yearn for FDR in the White House, Moxie served at soda fountains, and professional baseball without the designated hitter.

These are the same cats who won't give Mariano his due for the Cy because he's "only a closer."
