New York police reported a major outage of cellular phone service in the borough of Queens on Thursday.
"It's just an FYI. It has nothing to do with anything else. It's not criminal," a police spokesman said.
Two of New York's major airports -- JFK and LaGuardia -- are in the borough of Queens. Airport security was intensified after British police said they had foiled a plot to blow up several aircraft flying between Britain and the United States.

Thank you. With it being the tallest building in NY now,I'd expect it to be a likely target,if there was another attack.

On the other hand, fairs may be coming down . . . . Well, I can understand why Islamists would want to strike fairs...carnival people can be sketchy.
But in the meantime, airline fares may come down!! ;-)

Fortunately, I have no plans to visit NYC anytime soon. My work no longer calls for it. Too bad. I enjoy New York.

So do I. I was actually there this past weekend. My wife treated me to a Mets game at Shea on Saturday for our anniversary, which had been the weekend before.

And Central Park
IMO, Central Park is one of the safest places to be in case of attack because of all the exposed bedrock that one can duck behind. My route to and from work is planned around the many outcroppings.
Of course, timing is everything ...

They are regular cellphones modified to keep track of minutes and expiration. They use regular networks like Cinglar's GSM.

I think that in light of everything else that's been going on recently (the airliner bomb plot, the attempted hijacking, etc.), maybe a little bit of paranoia is in order right now.
It could be that a little bit of paranoia overloaded the system. People tend to forget that during big scares, there are outages, because there is too much traffic and not enough bandwidth.

Everyone on their phones with a friend who's stuck at an airport somewhere.

"How does this police spokesman KNOW that???????"
