"It wasn't the Pharisee who helped the man who lay by the wayside, having fallen prey to robbers. It was a Samaritan; today we would say, a Palestinian."
Actually, Samaritans were inhabitants of Judah at the time of the split between North and South. They were considered apostate by the southern Israelites, but they certainly weren't "Palestinians". Samaratans were Jewish, they even built their own Temple, which they considered to be the true Temple of Israel.
This man not only doesn't have a clue, he is evil! Absolutely sickening read.
Please post a barf alert to this article.
The only way to combat this kind of crap is to show your support for Israel. Wear it proud. That's what will frighten these kooks.
This Gaardner is truly a sick and morally absent man. If the name of the author was not posted, I would have thought that it was Ahmedinejad or Nasrallah. It is also very reminiscent of a speech that might have been heard in 1930s Germany.
FRmail me to be added or removed from this Judaic/pro-Israel/Russian Jewry ping list.
Warning! This is a high-volume ping list.
QUISLING lives on!!!!
From one of the reader reactions:
Middle East researcher Hilde Henriksen Waage was hardly surprised by the reaction provoked by Jostein Gaarder.
"If I had read Jostein Gaarder's article before it went to print I would have, pointedly, advised him: Get police protection, get a lawyer and leave the country," Henriksen Waage told Aftenposten.no.

I would find it interesting to read what others are saying about this person. Maybe we can have a follow-up on it.
But he represents an interesting phenomenon. One which Israel and its supporters would do well to recognize. His statement demonstrates a new emboldenment among Israel's foes, an expression of intensity that has become more widespread since 911. More widespread and more acceptable in some quarters.
From 1948, when Israel was founded, to 2001, the tiny country experienced fifty years of war. 911 changed many things, among them the role of the US in the long conflict. With that changed role for the most powerful nation in the world came increased intensity in opinion, an example of which we see expressed above in its most anti-Semitic form.
My point is simply this: The conflict cannot withstand another fifty years at increasing levels of intensity. Something's got to give -- and soon. Let's hope our leaders are skillful enough to devise strategies that force the Islamofascists to give -- not a certain outcome -- else Israel may be facing the very existential crisis the author above predicts.
Statements like the one I've made are usually heavily denounced on this forum, but to me, given the history in the region, the demographics there, and all that's happened and is happening now, my opinion is merely a pragmatic appraisal of the situation.
There's plenty here:

In the meantime
Missing passport fears: The number of missing Norwegian passports is approaching 100,000 and the National Criminal Investigation Service (NCIS) fears that most of these are in criminal hands.
"there is no clear overview of how big this problem is....
The NCIS fears that many of Norway's missing passports are being misused, and they are particularly attractive since Norwegian citizens can travel visa-free to so many countries."

Tell that to Ahmadinejad. ;)
Thank you for that link. It is nice to see what others have written in response.
This one is particularly good
Irresponsible word play: After the international furor sparked by author Jostein Gaarder's harsh criticism of Israel's policy in Lebanon, Professor Odd-Bjørn Fure was asked about how to conduct such a discussion without providing fodder for anti-Semitism.

My first thought exactly - more crap from the land of Quisling.
This norwegian "author" has eaten way too many pickled herring....
There is no such entity as "the world", not in the way this author uses the term.
Yes, there is a planet, and people who live on it, but they exist in multiple political communities.
They cannot act together, whether to show mercy, or to sow devastation.
One of these political communities is now dedicated to the extermination of another. Rendering the target defenseless simply means that the target will be destroyed.
What a load of BS.
