A major terrorist plot to blow up planes in mid-flight has been disrupted by police, Scotland Yard says.
It is thought the plan was to detonate explosive devices smuggled on board aircraft in hand luggage.
During the night, police arrested a number of people in London after a counter-terrorist operation they said had lasted several months.
Police believe the attacks would have been particularly targeted at flights from the UK to the US.
The Department for Transport said security at all UK airports has been increased.
Passengers on all flights will not be allowed to take any hand luggage on to any flights in the UK.
Only the barest essentials - including passports and wallets - will be allowed to be carried on board in transparent plastic bags.

Yeah, that phenomenon has been true through the ages. Tyrants realize that folks who can't be trusted to protect their own families, nests and Nations can't be trusted with anything.
People--especially irresponsible, immature, PLEASURE-OF-THE-MOMENT; hedonistic; willfully blind; SELFISH; short-sighted; self-centered; . . . . etc. people have no time to even learn much about history and certainly no inclination to remember much about history.
The conscious philosophical underpinnings of their lives are grossly lacking and a shallow hodge podge of rationalizations justifying whatever impulse or habitual addiction happens to be pushing their buttons at the moment.
They have trouble thinking things through even about cause and effect--even about the effects of their own actions in causing misery--even about the effects of 6 beers before the drive home resulting in the 12 DUI, loss of license; loss of job; loss of freedom; loss of marriage; loss of family . . . They do not make those connections and especially not ahead of time--they don't anticipate consequences well.
Shallow, Pleasure-Of-The-Moment-People [POTMP] have been plentiful throughout history. They have always been easily manipulated by the Machiavelli's of the world. And just as easily swept into the gas chambers immediately afterwards. They are the shallow, chaff, philosophical, serf fodder of tyrants rises to power for millenia.

I also flew today. Everything was delayed and there were a lot of police with dogs at the LR airport when I finally arrived home. My luggage was "lost" but it turned up a few hours later. The terror threat seemed very real today as I was sitting in the Hartsfield Airport.

Ahhhhhh, for THAT, I think we have to go back to Adam and Even and the FALL . . . the genetic pollution of mankind with the corruption of rebellion against God.
THAT gets dealt with over time as we deliberately choose to accept Christ; His Blood covering and cleansing and follow His Spirit as HE leads us into all truth. But that's a refiner's fire route involving taking our crosses up daily; dying daily to the deceptions and destructive appetites of the flesh . . .
And THAT is not attractive to POTMP who are only interersted in temporarly feeling good; feeling a thrill; feeling in control; feeling powerful . . . . etc.
And, poor parenting tends to multiply the latter and prevent/disourage the former.
Godly parenting that does not provoke children to wrath but leads them carefully, firmly but lovingly in the WAY EVERLASTING . . . discourages the latter and implements the former.
How many quality parents do you know--by that standard--even in good churches!??? Precious pitifully few, in my experience.
