A major terrorist plot to blow up planes in mid-flight has been disrupted by police, Scotland Yard says.
It is thought the plan was to detonate explosive devices smuggled on board aircraft in hand luggage.
During the night, police arrested a number of people in London after a counter-terrorist operation they said had lasted several months.
Police believe the attacks would have been particularly targeted at flights from the UK to the US.
The Department for Transport said security at all UK airports has been increased.
Passengers on all flights will not be allowed to take any hand luggage on to any flights in the UK.
Only the barest essentials - including passports and wallets - will be allowed to be carried on board in transparent plastic bags.

I believe that most travellers do fully understand the world today. These talking points about travellers not tolerating "inconvenience" don't ring true and seem to come from some corporate level somewhere.

I was just thinking about the face to face interviews they conduct. And it's true that there are atypical types who probably are and will be jihadis. El Al does pretty darn good. That's what gave me chills when I saw United 93 .. the looks, the eyes of the terrorists just stood out like a sore thumb, like the dead eyes of Atta. If they'd been interviewed, who knows what some savvy security type would've been alerted to.
I know nothing about explosives....but it sounds like the terrorists have something liquid or maybe gel like? One time, on Bonanza, some clear liquid blew up and blinded Little Joe.....
Any breakdown of function can be labeled "inconvenience" by someone in a sufficiently high ivory tower. Why, Hiroshima was an inconvenience to Japan.

Not sure if this has been brought up on this thread - but just a thought: just days ago a senior muslim police office was in the news regarding muslims taking the heat from anti terror activies and this happens...
Exactly! The extreme threat level might also be because the authorities believe that the terrorists have succeeded in a dry run through security.
