I'd say they're going for the Sears Tower and either the Tunnels or Subway/Path.
Pittsburgh is closer to New York City than Minneapolis is to Chicago.
I think it's more likely that the guy they caught in Minneapolis was trying to get to his destination and told authorities where to find the others. (Amtrak goes to Montana through Minneapolis.)

Or the Mall of America. Large groups of people. Light security. A few of my in-laws have seen and reported to the FBI instances of Muslim men taking pictures of Camp Snoopy air intakes, exits, etc.
Minneapolis is a good six to eight hours from Chicago.
Depends on how fast you drive.
At least Minneapolis is "on the way" to Montana, at least from New York. But I'd be more concerned about the Mall of America.
