Carter: Bush pursuing 'erroneous' policy
Former President Carter, who helped broker the historic Camp David peace accord, said President Bush has pursued an "erroneous policy" that has fostered violence in the Middle East.
Carter said the United States should work for an immediate cease-fire between Israel and Hezbollah and the world community should concentrate on a long-term solution, but he is uncertain whether Bush can accomplish a cease-fire.
"It depends on whether world opinion is strong enough to get the administration to change its erroneous policy, which has been to encourage the continuation of attacks on both sides," Carter, a Democrat, told The Grand Rapids Press in an interview Friday.
Carter's comments came a day before the U.S. and France agreed on a draft U.N. Security Council resolution that calls for an end to the fighting between Israel and Hezbollah, but would allow Israel to defend itself if attacked.
As president, Carter helped broker the Camp David peace accord between Israel and Egypt, the first peace deal between the Jewish state and an Arab nation.
"In my opinion, maybe the worst ally Israel has had in Washington has been the George W. Bush administration, which hasn't worked to bring a permanent peace to Israel," Carter told the newspaper.

Carter's irrational hatred of Bush is clouding this judgment, he should just shut up.

I would agree if I thought Carter had any judgement. He is sick utopian liberal disconnected with reality. That is why he got the peace prize, for conducting a utopian gesture that was completely useless. So it goes with liberals.
I love that map!
"Eqypt hasn't attacked Israel since."
Yeah, because the US gives them about $4 billion in aid a year not to.
The problem is, Carter probably thinks it was all his doing, and now tries to pound every square peg into his round piehole - all the while oblivious to the fact you can only have peace when either one side is completely defeated or both sides wish to stop fighting.
Sub-Driver...I bet you are soo delighted to have something in common (submarines) with the sanctimonious twit who did more damage to this country than anyone in modern history!
From the lip's of the proved savior of American interests in the ME.
"Carter the Magnificent" speaks again with a legacy only wished for by those who crave an "anti-American" America. If it weren't for politics and it's influence, the likes of Carter would be deported through common sense.
Just consider whether the "the historic Camp David peace accord" worked or whether it was just a chance for Israel's enemies to reload. There is no chance for peace in the Mideast -- period.
From the imbecile who gave us the Ayatollah and let our people be marched around as hostages for over a year. The original weak kneed wuss has a solution....oh yeah.
One might wonder why the Camp David Accords worked. The answer is simple. These two guys were tired of fighting.
This truth is the same explanation for why the peace accords of the 90's have failed so miserably. Israel, tired of fighting, has been led down the primrose path. Every step of the way they have given concessions resulting in deteriorating security. Their mistake has been negotiating agreements with a group that is not tired of fighting (the PLO), fostered by a guy (Clinton) that simply wants a shot at a Nobel Peace Prize.
This recent conflict is the direct result of the UN not enforcing the requirements of resolution 1559 calling for the disarmament of militias in Lebanon, despite having UN observers sitting there watching.
Oh yeah, I forgot to add...Carter is an idiot because he doesn't understand any of this.
"Exactly. Anwar Sadat, a man the likes of whom the Muslim world had not seen before nor has seen since, decided to put down the sword."
My goodness. The devil needs to check the temperature in Hell. You and I just agreed.
No. Not after all these years, would he?
BAH HAAAAA HAAAA HAAAA!!!!!!!!!
I really do curse this man each and every day. If it weren't for his policies my family wouldn't be serving in war zones.
Carter ping.
And geez. I thought Jimmuh was in Havana maintaining a vigil over Fidel's death bed!
Actually, Sadat and Begin pretty much worked it out on their own. They needed Jimmy to pay for it and of course he basked in the reflected totally unwarranted glory.
Carter's too stupid to see Bush is turning them against each other throughout the region.
The Shiites taking power scares the Sunnis. That's why Saudi's just called Hezbollah "satanic".
This is a power struggle to see who calls the shots in the Near East Region. Bush's plan will bear fruit in a few more years.
What a beautiful graphic! And the same one from 1984 is even prettier!
