Three-pronged attack aims to push Hizbullah back to Litani
By YAAKOV KATZ AND JPOST STAFF

The security cabinet approved on Tuesday morning expanded ground operations in Lebanon, while the IDF, under the assumption that only a few days were left for the operations against Hizbullah, was already gearing up Monday night for a massive ground incursion into Lebanon on three different fronts, utilizing the Golani, Nahal and the Paratroopers infantry brigades.

The IDF reported that ground forces had taken up positions in the southern Lebanese town of A-Taybe and were carrying out operations in Al-Adaysa and Rav a-Taltin, west of Metulla. Officials said that the above-mentioned towns were being used as Katyusha rocket launching sites.

During clashes with Hizbullah guerrillas in the area, anti-tank missiles and mortar shells were fired at troops, causing no casualties.

Meanwhile, the IDF said that in recent operations in the region, 20 Hizbullah operatives had been killed and troops had discovered stockpiles of anti-tank missiles.

The cabinet-approved plan, according to senior IDF sources, was to utilize the last remaining days of the operation, which they estimated would be over by week's end, to push Hizbullah back as far north as the Litani River in central Lebanon.

"An extensive ground operation could destroy the Hizbullah terror infrastructure there," a high-ranking IDF source said. "This is our opportunity to strike at Hizbullah."

Defense Minister Amir Peretz rejected calls for a cease-fire on Monday. "This is a difficult and painful fight but we can overcome it," he said during a speech in the Knesset plenum. "We cannot agree to a cease-fire that will go into effect immediately."

In addition to the attempt to push Hizbullah north to the Litani, the IDF is also working on carving out a two-kilometer security zone along the northern border, under which all of the Hizbullah outposts there would be completely razed and guerrillas would not be allowed to return to the borderline area.

Hizbullah fired two Katyusha rockets at Kiryat Shmona on Monday. No one was wounded, but fires broke out as a result of the explosions.

Al Taibe - just to the west of Israel's most northerly tip (the pan handle).

Close to Kiryat Shmona, the twon that has been exposed to so many Katyusha attacks.

Truly sad.

They are so young. That one kid hasn't even figured out that you dont rest your finger(s) on the trigger when you are not going weapon ready.

I dont understand the mentality of these barbarians to purposely throw away their children.

I'm sure you noted the t-shirt on the guy in the lead.

That building in the first picture looked like someone just took a giant saw and shaved the wall off. Amazing. Thanks.

" I dont understand the mentality of these barbarians to purposely throw away their children.'

It's a vicious circle. Raised to have no respect for their own life,to consider it forfeit for the prophet, they can't possibly have respect for any other life.....even their own flesh and blood.

It's a concept that we in the west just don't fully understand and its slowing us down as a group in comming to grips with this war.

"Overstayed a student visa he got 27 years ago..."

Hamdan (familiar name): illegal alien founded a mosque near the original Disneyland and funneled millions of dollars to Hamas.

And Judge Hatter colludes with the terrorists, per a lawsuit filed by ACLU.

Pretty well sums up all that is plaguing the U.S. and the world, I'd say.

That is the correct location, Taibe on the topo. New reports of fighting there, as well as Aadaisse back on the border, Rabb ath Thalathin, unmarked on the topo but 1.1 km due south of Taibe, just west of the hilltop, and Kfar Kila, next hilltop due east.

IDF was in there early Sunday morning (EDT) per reports from Ynet and Haaretz, but came back out Monday morning (local), with quotes from tankers about being in their tanks for 36 hours straight, indicating they probably went in sometime Saturday (EDT), and pulled out when the "stand down" precluded CAS.

Hezbollah reports confirm fighting around this area, and also claim fighting around Aaita exh Chaab (Aita al Shaab), 9.1 km WSW of Bent Jbail, near the border.

Reports from JPost have Nahal Division and Golani Division's Brigade (Bge) 13 operating near Taibe, while reports from yesterday also have Bge 401, an armored unit, operating in that area. Location unpublished but also involved in or soon to be involved in fighting are Galilee Division and Paratroops Division, per various reports.

Ynet claims 5 divisions are expected to take part, two of them armored, but does not seem able to distinguish between units of Corps size, Division size, and Brigade size, referring to one unit as an "armored Corps division".

Reserves from the 30k callup last week are reported to be enroute to the above locations where they will roundout units already discussed, again take this with a grain of salt, IDF operates in a very fluid and flexible manner compared to other modern armies, especially in TACON and OPCON arrangements of units.

If anyone has more info on the Korean DMZ skirmish, or on a reported Israeli 15k additional callup, above and beyond last week's 30k callup, I could use it, thx.

No, but you can service the entrances daily or even hourly with airstrikes and prevent their use in some cases. Just letting the enemy know that you know where his goodies are may be enough to convince him to move them, exposing them to attack while in transit.

This re DMZ on LGF:

SEOUL, South Korea — Soldiers from North Korea and South Korea exchanged fire along their border late Monday, but no one was hurt, a South Korean military official said Tuesday.

The incident happened shortly before sunset when North Korean soldiers fired two bullets toward a South Korean guard post in the eastern part of the Demilitarized Zone, said Maj. Kim Tae-hoon of the Joint Chiefs of Staff office.

South Korean soldiers immediately fired back six rounds, Kim said.

He said South Korea doesn’t know what prompted the North troops to open fire and the secretive communist country hasn’t said anything to the South about it.

Thanks for the info.

Could be some NK got a wild hair, could be NK et al is looking for an excuse.

Heads up, all, the next 24 to 72 hours look to be the highest risk for a widening conflict that we have seen in this crisis to date.
