DAMASCUS (Reuters) - Syrian President Bashar al-Assad told the Syrian military on Monday to raise its readiness, pledging not to abandon support for Lebanese resistance against Israel.

"We are facing international circumstances and regional challenges that require caution, alert, readiness and preparedness," Assad said.

"The barbaric war of annihilation the Israeli aggression is waging on our people in Lebanon and Palestine is increasing in ferocity," Assad said in a written address on the occasion of the 61st anniversary of the foundation of the Syria Arab Army.

Ha, at least he admits Israel is getting the job done. However, he let his slip show with the "our people" comment.

They will get involved deeper since they are Iran's little butt boys...and may be stupid enough to use Saddam's WMD ..... Israel respond in kind, they've already stated so as a matter of policy...If any nation uses WMD against Israel they will immediately respond "accordingly" (nuclear).

The Arab mentality is emboldened by their enemies weakness....Israels response has been weak to this point.... They haven't committed the necessary ground troops to effectively destroy Hezbollah.....

As aeriel bombing mistakes are inevitable, public opinion in the Arab world has changed from lackluster disdain of Hezbollah to vibrant support.

You can't defeat them from the air, you can degrade their capability but ultimately ground troops are needed.

You will see Syrian troops soon commit to support Hezbollah troops in southern Israel. This will happen within the week at the urging of Iran...overt material and logistic support at first, then regular troops...

This is all aimed at circumstances orchestrated by Iran for the August 22nd date. They will gladly sacrifice their Syrian puppet......

Iran has a strategic alliance with North Korea....North Korea has nuclear weapons and have helped the Iranian program.

To serve their means, it would not be an unreasonable stretch to assume that NK directly supplied Iran with several nuclear weapons or enough fissionable material for Iran to fashion their own.

What would Iran do with these weapons? Hezbollah terrorists smuggle several into this country to simultaneously set off in major US cities.... who would we hit in retaliation with nuclear weapons? Lebanon?
Not with Israel so close. Suppose they set off the weapons in the US and hit Bagdad and key middle-east US cities....Our military capability would be severely degraded. Couple that with overseas oil supplies drying up and our ability to conduct conventional war is severely degraded. Don't forget Hugo Chavez whose country supplies a large portion of our refined oil and is now Iran's favorite little butt boy.....

Evil forces are converging on the US and Israel. Russia and China would benefit, Europe would hide under their bed...

This is going to be ugly...

I have to say that the picture doesn't look like any 155mm I've ever seen. It's not a pig or a long tom, and it's sure not an M198 or an M109XX. In fact, IIRC, I've seen the picture some 30-40 years ago and it's the 240mm gun known as "Atomic Annie".

I agree with you. If that treaty would be lifted we could put nuclear missiles in orbit cutting the strike time from 30 minutes to mere minutes.

The did not have a pic of a 155mm cannon using firing a nuclear shell because they never tested one.

Can Israel kick Syria's butt while kicking Lebanon's butt?
(I'm a relative newcomer to knowing the history, abilities, etc. of these countries.) I hope so, and I hope they do.

Indeed. Redlegs Rule! Annie was at Sill the last time I was there just under 30 years ago in the outdoor museum artillery park. I think the 155mm nuke has only been tested underground to make sure it will go 'boom'. I spent a couple of years at Sill playing with those toys. BTW, did you know about the time in the '50s when a 240mm round was fired out of safe into the intersection of Sheridan and Gore?

I did not know that. I know that that the loading feature Atomic Annie fired had an automatic and manual feature. During the test, they used the manual feature(of course). Before the test, they fired several test shells to gauge the distance. The recoil was breathtaking.

Chances are Al-Assad may rue the day he backed Hezbollah. They have led him to the brink, and he may have to jump.

Yes, rather easily. The Syrian army is using very old soviet equipment which was inferior even in its heyday.

They don't want to engage in a ground war with Israel. They'd be fairly quickly eliminated.
