NEW YORK — Willie Nelson says the Dixie Chicks "got a raw deal" from a disapproving public following their criticism of President Bush.
"I think the fact that they were overseas and onstage had a little bit to do with it because you're speaking to other people about our business," the 73-year-old country crooner said in an interview in this week's Time magazine.
The trio caught harsh criticism after lead singer Natalie Maines told a London audience in 2003 that the group was "ashamed" Bush was from their home state of Texas.
Nelson said he was surprised his remarks about Bush a year earlier during an overseas news conference didn't incite a similar controversy.
"I said 'He's not from Texas and he ain't a cowboy, so let's stop trashin' Texans and cowboys.' It got a little chuckle, but I didn't get run out of the country," Nelson told the magazine.
Nelson recently launched his own XM Radio channel and published "The Tao of Willie," in which he offers his philosophy on subjects ranging from marijuana to war.
I got free tickets to one of his concerts in the early 90's. It was the worst excuse for a concert that I have ever been to (and I've been to some bad concerts). He came on stage obviously drunk or stoned. He slurred his words and was wobbling around so much he could barely stand up. He forgot the words to some of his most famous songs and his voice was just totally gone. He attempted to sing about 5 or 6 songs and then just walked off the stage. It was pitiful.
At the time, i really liked the Moody Blues music too, but sometimes the show doesn't live up to the music. And like with The Who it was the other way around.
My husband always HATED Tom Petty's music. He'd mock him by singing in a nasally voice. But this time i dragged him kicking in screaming to the concert. He loved it and since then he loves Petty's music.
Oh, and another major disappointment, was a very recent Bob Dylan concert. He sounded baaaad. And normally i like his sound. And he never addressed the crowd with a hello. He said Thanks once maybe twice max. And i don't recall him even saying goodbye at the end. And to top it off, no encore and "Like a Rolling Stone" sucked!

It's been awhile so i don't remember specifically. I just remember hating it so much that i begged my husband to leave. He wouldn't. All i can say is that the music is better on the radio than live IMO.

I drove away happy, and for the next few days, every time I'd say, "Beethoven," I'd get beautiful classical music, and if I said, "Beatles," I'd get one of their awesome songs.
Yesterday, a couple ran a red light and nearly creamed my new car, but I swerved in time to avoid them. I yelled, "Ass Holes!"
Immediately, the French National Anthem began to play, sung by Jane Fonda and Barbara Streisand, backed up by Michael Moore and The Dixie Chicks, with John Kerry on guitar, Al Gore on drums, D an Rather on harmonica, Barbara Pelosi on tambourine, Harry Reid on spoons, Bill Clinton on sax, and Ted Kennedy on scotch.

Willie it works let this, you have the right to say something stupid and I have the right to call you stupid for saying it. Just because the dixie hens got more press about saying something stupid than you, I sure has NO reflection of public opinion about you.
But i must admit that as much of a flaming stupid lib John Fogerty is, i have to go see him whenever he's in town.
When it comes to "movie stars" i do blacklist them for their comments in nearly all cases. There are a few exceptions, but that depends on whether or not the movie is a propaganda piece, in which case I don't care who it is i won't go.
I said it long ago, and it is even more true today.

I SO agree! I saw them twice in the last few years, major disappointment. I think it has to do with their voices...they can't hit the high notes like they used to. They're getting older, and they don't need to remind me that I also am aging (notice I didn't use the word "older" when referring to myself!) When a band has to bring in new singers, or backup girls, they're not the band I grew up with. The music is always better on the CD...well, except for a recent concert I attended, but won't bring THAT up again!
Oh, come on! Bring it up. I haven't heard about it. What band are you referring to?
