Israeli combat soldiers walk along the Israeli northern border with Lebanon. US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice is pursuing a new round of Middle East diplomacy as the Lebanon conflict moved into its 19th day, with Israel and Hezbollah exchanging firepower and threats in defiance of international moves toward a ceasefire
Israel agrees to 48-hour halt in IAF activity over south Lebanon to probe Qana strike
Israel has agreed to suspend its aerial bombardment of southern Lebanon for 48 hours, effective immediately, to allow for an investigation into Sunday's bombing that killed 54 civilians, a U.S. State Department official said early Monday.
Israel will also coordinate with the United Nations to allow a 24-hour window for residents of southern Lebanon to leave the area if they wish, State Department spokesman Adam Ereli told a briefing in Jerusalem.

Someone should check her cellar for pods...
LOL!! My thoughts, exactly. I had to do a double take to see if it was really her.
Now it's 24-48hrs. for humanitarian aid AND to investigate Qana. Israel, however, will certainly protect themselves if fired upon. I knew it would change...
me too!
If the hezzbullies will let them leave!
The media won another one, that's what the hell happened.
Why would Israel put its people in danger for PR reasons?
Haaretz is now saying 24 hours for the civilians to leave, 48 hours for an investigation.
Oh, fer cryin' out loud....
(They know what they're doing....they know what they're doing....they know what they're doing...)
my fingers are speechless......
I thought Sistani demanded? See how they run.
Israel is saying they reserve the right to resume airstrikes immediatesly if any missiles are fire on them from Lebanon.
10 years ago an attack on the same village caused over a hundred casulties and it ended the war completely.
Good news.
Israel: Please, don't fight a PC war. Fight to win... democracies across the world are counting on you, whether or not they have the backbone to say it out loud.
that is a first....(ducks)
rubbing hands together...
update?
Ok, enough popping up to indicate that a town with a name close enough to the one reported exists, removing my prime objection.
We still only have "Lebanese sources" reporting an IDF raid there, and many parrots quoting them.
If IDF did try to drop SOF in, there is a huge prize there. It isn't the time for SOF raids, for a lot of reasons, so whatever's there is militarily significant.
Or WAS militarily significant, with IAF supposedly tearing it up now.
If the fact of the raid is true, are we now going to hear about mass casualties from the dust plume raised by the bombing?
;-)
The Dems are trolling for Jewish votes and trying to remain visible. The percentage they've been garnering has been steadily falling for years, and ever since this thing blew up no one has been talking about domestic politics, which is all they really care about: enacting socialism here in the U.S. They know full well that we'd like nothing better than to set Israel loose on the barbarians and they both see a need to compete and want to remain relevant. As far as Condi goes, who knows -- I think her purpose is purely for PR purposes -- look like we want to stop the fighting but don't actually accomplish anything.
