WASHINGTON - Two summers ago, on a congressional trip to Estonia, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton astonished her traveling companions by suggesting that the group do what one does in the Baltics: hold a vodka-drinking contest.
Delighted, the leader of the delegation, Sen. John McCain, quickly agreed. The after-dinner game went so well - memories are a bit hazy on who drank how much - that McCain, R-Ariz., later told people how unexpectedly engaging he found Clinton to be. "One of the guys" was the way he described Clinton, D-N.Y., to some Republican colleagues.
Clinton and McCain went on to develop an amiable if professionally calculated relationship. They took more official trips together, including to Iraq. They worked together on the Senate Armed Services Committee and on the issue of global warming. They made a joint appearance last year on "Meet the Press," interacting so congenially that the moderator, Tim Russert, joked about their forming a "fusion ticket."
Politics being what it is, there is more friction than fusion. As the 2008 presidential campaign begins to take shape, with McCain and Clinton at the top of the polls for their parties' nominations, they are increasingly underscoring their differences on such issues as the war in Iraq and port security. Advisers to McCain have put a stop to his inviting Clinton on trips.
Whether their friendship is based on anything other than the respect of one political professional for another, or the opportunity to strike a tone of bipartisanship for public consumption, is unclear. But the interplay between the two senators, both well known and both with compelling personal narratives and a knack for infuriating their own parties' bases, could determine the tone of the 2008 presidential race and make it less personally vicious than the past two campaigns.

How precious.
Reason enough not to vote for either one of them!
And they'd each cut out your heart to become president.
They are two peas in the same pod.
I wouldn't trust either one of these two power hungry fools.
Pretentious fakes both.
McCain shmoozing with Hellary.....
Why are we not surprised?
):^(
Why are we not surprised?
Because we were born at night....but not last night. :-)
And Bush 41 is buddy buddy with Bill.
McCain now goes to the back of the pack.
Bookmarking for election time.
Did the beast and McCain trade any belly shots?
When ever I think of McCain, I think of his puppy dog, my senator, Lindsey Graham.
South Carolina has got to do better next time.
You mean he's running for office again?
Who cares. He doesn't have his finger on the button anymore, so whoever he cares to hang out with doesn't make any difference.
LADIES AND GENTLEMEN. YOUR 2008 PRESIDENTIAL TICKET.
GAG
Oh puhleeeeeze!
McCain is campaigning for a cabinet post. Never forget that McCain's wife is also a Hillary fan, and during McCain's campaign in 2000, she wore a Hillary pin.
Nobody with a brain wants McCain to be president - EVER! And .. I wish the media would stop saying he's the front-runner for 2008 - HE'S NOT!!
Just making the point that whoever is at the top of the political food chain sees more similarity between themselves and other Presidents or wannabees than they do with their constituency or even members of congress from the same party. By the way, the friendship between Billy boy and Bush 41 does matter as they have worked together on more than one occasion at Bush 43's behest. It's a tight circle at the top and party doesn't matter most of the time.
We don't need drunks in the WH.
Sheesh, I'll bet they told dirty jokes to each other in the MEN'S john.
Just one more reason to not trust McCain (as if I needed another one).
See reply 15! :-)
