Help me with an Israel question
Steve

Posted on 07/26/2006 12:39:16 PM PDT by When do we get liberated?

I am having an argument with a Palestinian friend of mine on the Israel/Hizzbullah situation and I am stuck and unable to prove that Hizzbullah fired rockets into Israel prior to Israel's incursion of Southern Lebanon. Can someone point me in the right direction on this one?

Uh Oh.

Your friend is correct. The missiles didn't start the issue. A militant incursion and attack on the sovereign nation of Israel that killed several soldiers and kidnapped two started this war. In any country in the world, this is considered an act of war. Israel went after the organization that attacked them, AGAIN.

Since it's been going on for 20+ years the MSM hadn't reported too much on it.

Yes, but the hezbos have been lobbing Katyushas into Northern Israel pretty much whenever they feel like it since Israel pulled out in 2000.

Except that it was in 1996. History in Middle-East repeats itself...

Just ask your fiend why Israeli civilian casualties are relatively light compared to Lebanese.

Answer: most Israeli CIVILIANS in the north have BOMB SHELTERS because they regularly and historically live under constant threat of incoming rockets and artillery from terrorist attacks against CIVILIANS. Lebanese do not.

The missiles didn't start the issue.

It is part of the equation. Why do you think the Lezbullies have 13,000 rockets and missiles? They have sporadically tossed them into Israel the past several years.

That was all over the news.

They have been firing rockets into Israel for many months.

Also Hizzies acknowledge that they killed some Israeli troops in Israel and kidnapped two of them and took them into Lebanon.

Thanks for the link. I thought it would be informative to post Joe's response to the Captain:

Captain: You will be surprised how much traction and support UNIFIL will get at the end of July. Again, you assume that there is logic in the minds of the UN – that is wishful thinking. Lets watch how events unfold … Chinese, Russians, French – the only hope there is that throwing so many spanners in the US works may one day clog the whole global economy, and expose the very thin fabric of all these friendly nations. Meanwhile, watch how UNIFIL is honored at every turn by every one nation (including US, as they will have no chance but to support the 50% democrats at home). But there is a lot of hope – soon Iran will have nuclear capabilities, and once they have it, they will not hesitate to share some cake with the Palis – who will not hesitate to through it over the fence. Then the gloves will be finally off. Too bad that the liberals do not see this clearly – that will be their loss for the next decades to come – not containing nuclear threats while conventional power still works. As for UNIFIL – you have no idea what good salaries these scum get while vacationing on the border with their families. It is a liberal dream come true – then comes the medals and the honors, from nations oh so grateful for their services. Posted by: PrivateJoe at July 26, 2006 02:09 PM

The "Palestinian" is "wrong".

Rockets have been fired into Israel constantly.

Concerning this particular incident: there was simultaneous rocket fire on Israel occurring as a diversionary tactic while Hezbolla invaded, kidnapped the two soldiers, and killed others.

I should have been more specific. THIS latetest battle in the ongoing conflict as is being reported in MSM, started with the attack on Israel.

Agreed on the previous couple of posts documenting the history.

Take a step back with your friend. What is Hezbollah's legitimacy to power? They are not the duly elected Lebanese government are they? You can make the point that Israel is not attacking Lebanon, it's attacking a gang of thugs. In all seriousness, it would be nice if the palestinian and lebanese governments would help with Hizbollah. They are afterall and supposedly elected governments committed to the rule of law. Once the 'state with-in a state' actors are eliminated, sympathetic governments will have choices to make. That is, they can fight Israel (under the watchful eye of the world)or they can accept Israel. The dirty little secret is that Hizbollah, Hamas, Islamic Jihad, etc. are all 'fig-leaf' terrorist groups for Muslim Governments. It's time to expose this fact and get everyones cards on the table.

During what time frame? They've been doing it for many years.

"The Israel-Hezbollah duel showed no signs of letup Wednesday as more Katyusha rockets fell in northern Israel and southern Lebanon. One Hezbollah rocket fell near an apartment building in the Israeli border city of Kiryat Shmona, wounding a man in his 50s. Since Tuesday, over 100 rockets have been fired at Israel and the self-declared security zone it occupies in southern Lebanon, U.N. spokesman Mikael Lindvall said."

Hezbollah has been doing this for years, and Israeli soldiers stationed along the northern border get killed or injured all the time.

Most Lebanese buildings do have bomb shelters. I was in one for a couple of months consecutively when the Syrians were shelling CIVILIAN areas and the world just watched. Luckily Lebanese buildings are made of reinforced concrete. American style homes would have caught fire or flattened very quickly.
