Why is Condi Rice a Republican? And can she be reprogrammed? (NOT A PARODY ALERT)
Chicago Sun-Times ^ | July 26, 2006 | JENNIFER HUNTER

Posted on 07/26/2006 4:23:45 AM PDT by Chi-townChief

It has always mystified me that Condoleezza Rice is a Republican. She's black, she's a woman, she's smart. (OK, I hear all you Republicans snorting and getting ready to e-mail. I will grudgingly allow there are other bright right-wingers -- but few black women Republicans, and who would sign up after the disasterous Bush White House response to Hurricane Katrina?)

It seems so counterintuitive that Rice, a woman raised in the racially charged atmosphere of Birmingham, Ala., in the 1950s, who knew two of the girls who were killed in the church bombing there in 1963, who had to overcome latent prejudice in academia, both as a woman and as an African American, should be a parrot for George W. Bush, a man so out of touch. What has she been smoking?

In fact, Rice was a bona fide Democrat until 1980, when she had an epiphany after overhearing a remark by President Jimmy Carter. He said he was shocked by the Soviet Union's invasion of Afghanistan. Rice, a scholar of Russian politics, was "shocked that anybody would be shocked by that," explained Nicholas Lemann in a profile of Rice for the New Yorker. Two years later she flipped to the GOP.

In some ways, Rice had always been a conservative, Lemann reported, untouched by the militancy of the '60s, including the civil rights movement; an only child who never rebelled; a woman who applied for post-graduate work at Stanford University on stationery that had her name embossed in gold across the top.

But as the saying goes, it's never too late to change. Or, in Rice's case, revert.

The Democrats could use Condi in the next election as a presidential candidate. Think about it: The Bushes got their hands on Rice when she was young and impressionable. She worked for Bush senior and got to know him well before she signed up with Dubya. It is hard sometimes to believe, when one hears her at press conferences or listens to her speeches, that she is saying what she believes, but rather that she is elegantly explaining -- since he can barely do it himself -- President Bush's positions.

"He's actually influencing her," notes Lemann, "and she seems to be performing for him the immensely useful service of transforming shorthand impulses into developed stated policy. When you hear Rice speaking, that's what Bush would sound like if he were as articulate as Rice is."

So what the Dems need to do is figure out how George capitivated her and impress upon her the error of her ways. I would love to see a woman in the White House next time, but I don't think Hillary Clinton is going to make it; her heart is in the right place, but she is too divisive and her recent speech at the Economic Club of Chicago made me want to put my head down on the table and have a long nap.

Hillary does not have the rhetorical flourishes to impassion those around her.

And, Rice -- if only she could be loosened from the Bush grasp and reprogrammed to become less aloof -- would make a dandy Democratic candidate. She could even go on the David Letterman show, a la Bill Clinton and his saxophone, and play the piano.

So this is my advice to the Democrats. Recruit Rice, develop some kind of solid program we bleeding heart liberals could embrace and then, get back into the White House! Got that?

So Jennifer admits that she thinks that women are "programmed" to be Liberals. And I thought they wanted to have brains.

The mispelling of the word "disastrous" is egregious, especially to be not caught by the editor.

I'm a bit confused as that's the way I spell it.

Say what you will about Miss Hunter, but her plan at least has a clearly delineated Step 2, unlike that of the underpants gnomes.

Well, he sent Karl Rove's ninjas to sabotage the buses, then he backed up the sewage into the Superdome.

And you're overlooking the basic fact . . . that Bush made Katrina happen (using Rove's weather machine) because he just plain hates black people.

Those poor gnomes are up all night working and singing. When do they have time to create step 2? Democrats, on the other hand, do not have the problem of excessive work hours.

And used a special bomb at the levy that caused the water to flow only into black neighborhoods and away from white neighborhoods.

I could have sworn that Rice's story as to what made her become Reoublican was when she saw her father being refused the right to vote because he was black. I have heard this story a couple of times..

On you post to me you compare the being Iraq war to being anti abortion. I just think the comparisons are not even close. You also mentioned about me being like the Democrats trying to rid Senator Lieberman because of his pro-war stance. I would bet that most people on this site would vote for an anti abortion candidate over a pro abortion candidate. How can that possibly be the same? This site is for conservatives who believe in pro life issues. I guess I don't know your issues, but I would think that on the most egregious issues that hard babies we would be in agreement. I think that has much more different than perhaps immigration or welfare or most issues. Remember when conservatives act conservative that tend to win.

Here is where the writer displays her fears: Hillary is a bore and a turn-off and after all these many years, the democrats STILL don't have a suitable female candidate that could appeal to the masses. They fear Condi is going to run --- and win.

The sorry bastards that bombed that church and killed those little girls were "DEMOCRATS", their organizations of hate were DEMOCRATS. They were spores of the "kkk" and "white citizens party", which the members were DEMOCRATS. I knew quite a few of those bigots and never did I come across one who voted Republican. They hated Africans and Israelis.

I can't believe how often I still hear the statement that Ronald Regan passed legislation to kick people off the welfare rolls and that's why there is such a large homeless population now. I had someone tell me just yesterday how RR had kicked her and her mom off the Social Security rolls after her father died. And this is an otherwise pretty conservative person! Maybe my memory has been dimmed with the passing of time, but gosh it seems to me like it used to take at 40 years for history get so completely rewritten to suit the libs! Now it seems to take only a year or two.

What was the Party of Segregation in the South? Were the KKK terrorists Democrats or Republicans? Who's been in control of academia for 50 years, Repuplicans or Democrats? Bottom line, the racism, discrimination and bigotry that Rice has faced in her life has come from Democrats, not Republicans.

Republicans have treated her as an individual with talents and abilities. Republicans have brought her in, appointed her to important jobs and promoted her to even more important jobs.

I believe it was at the National Convention, where Rice told the story of how the Democrats wouldn't register her father to vote in Alabama, but the Republicans would, so he registered to vote Republican in the South, during the height of KKK terrorism against blacks and their white friends. Registering blacks to vote in those days, you put your own life on the line.

Why for Pete's sake, would Rice even consider being a Democrat?

I met Ms. Rice back in 2000 at a seminar before she was appointed to National Security Adviser. She struck me then as sharp, intelligent, concise, and had no patience for fools or idiots.

Maybe that's why she's not a Democrat...

nd who would sign up after the disasterous Bush White House response to Hurricane Katrina?

I am so tired of hearing about that! It is a lying Meme that the Left keeps repeating. Katrina was the largest domestic mobilization of resources in the history of the USA. There has NEVER been a situation where Americans in a disaster attacked each other.

Until then, people took care of THEMSELVES. I didn't look to the Feds after the Northridge quake. Floridians depend on themselves ANNUALLY after hurricanes.

The response was amazingly fast, given its scope.

I think it is important that we, as Conservatives, get the true message out whenever possible.
