The candidate, immersed in one of the most competitive Senate races in the country, said down for lunch with reporters yesterday and had this to say on the Iraq war: "It didn't work. . . . We didn't prepare for the peace."
On the response to Hurricane Katrina: "A monumental failure of government."
On the national mood: "There's a palpable frustration right now in the country."
It's all fairly standard Democratic boilerplate -- except the candidate is a Republican .
"For me to pretend I'm not a Republican would be a lie," he reasoned. But to run as a proud Republican? "That's going to be tough, it's going to be tough to do," he said. "If this race is about Republicans and Democrats, I lose."

Is it logical that NINE reporters
would answer a summons from the
Lt. Governor of Maryland? I mean,
this guy is a nobody outside of
that state. I never heard of him
here in Illinois.
These reporters would travel to the ends of the earth to get a soundbite of a Republican bashing the president. And Michael Steele is a very snappy dresser. I have seen him in French cuffs. Chafee has never hidden his disdain for the president. Steele is just laying low here to keep the money flowing into his campaign from the GOP base. It's him, I have no doubt about it because he's used that term "monumental failure" before and he's dealing specifically with an issue of interest to black voters.
No way I would believe Steele would say some sheeit like that. What is your purpose for coming up with that crap.
I dont believe that for one minute.
Of course, this is assuming that Milbank didn't just make up this entire story out of whole cloth to begin with.
Can't be him. Pro-life.
Linc the Fink was my guess, too.
Elect Laffey.
My guess.
Sure, it's not Chafee. Though it's obvious why people are drawn to him first. But the obligatory post denouncing him and supporting Laffey? Must be made. As for this Senator?
Rush is saying it's Steele.
If so? He's lost me based on the statements about the Iraq war.
Strategery?
Just for information, Rush just said he received a super secret e-mail from somebody at the White House and they have said they now know it is Michael Steele. Rush did not say much else about it. He is taking a phone call now from a Sargeant...
Hmmm. Not a very principled person, if he's dissing the President, anonymously, yet gladly taking the financial support from the Republican Party.
He's hardly "nobody", and your not having heard of him MAY not be the ultimate guide to Who's Who in politics. And he is a very sharp dresser, which may well be another clue. French cuffs and monogrammed shirts are definitely his style. Considering that you've never heard of him, the fact that you can't "see" him being a good dresser are meaningless.
You're a loser no matter what happens to your precious seat of power.
You're so strong in your convictions you won't even put your name behind them.
We need leaders, not cowardly power mongers.
Who else could it be, then?
I just heard Limbaugh and he agrees with you
about this 9 reporter gig being Steele.
Sorry for the insult of not having heard of
the guy. But I'm a rube in Illinois.
Don't think I'd have voted for him...after
this article anyway. <>g,.
Oh, you certainly have your interesting politicians out there, too..... ;)
Yeah...both of them in the Senate.
But give us time, we're making a
progress a little at a time. Hard
to get someone really decent to run
against the Chicago mob.
