INDIANAPOLIS -- A 3-year-old boy was fatally injured when a floor-mounted mirror fell on him at an Indianapolis Wal-Mart.
Police said Christopher Antonio was apparently playing near the 5-foot-tall mirror in the children's section of the store Saturday evening when it fell at the store in the 3200 block of 86th Street.
The boy was with his 5-year-old sister and his mother. The mother told police she was about 5 feet away from her son when she heard a loud crash.
Police said it took two people to pull the mirror off the boy.
Well now I know just how young you are.
What? There were no heavy mirrors in the 50s? LOL!
The Bible I have doesn't tell me to avoid being judgemental. It warns me that with what judgement I judge I will be judged.
That's not a prohibition by any means.
Well, one of my brothers (also a FReeper) has a terrible recipe for coffee. He only gives the recipe to people crazy enough to ask. A few fellow posters have tried said recipe, with interesting results. One poster spoke of leaving some out while camping & finding a deer had drank some. It went ballistic & had to be "subdued".
The freepers pinged are the ones who could relate that story better.
I remember those! Today, that would be considered too humiliating, I imagine.
My parents never used one, our incentive to stick close and out of the way was dads belt when he got home...guess thats child abuse now.
SHE was at least 5 feet away from the mirror. He'd have been safe WITH her.
Actually kids aren't spanked anymore, it's child abuse you know. */sarc*
Thanks for showing me how obtuse you can really be.
The joy of friendly conversation. I can be swayed either way if presented with enough "logical" logic.
We both have been here long enough to know that if someone can't win debating facts, attack. There's been a lot of that. It also points out how different child rearing is now. Do you suppose there's a little guilt mixed in with the insults?
"Yup. They were in the cart under my control."
Do you mean to say one was in the seat and another was IN THE BASKET??? THAT is even more dangerous! Do you know how many kids fall out of baskets, or tip the whole thing over from standing up in it and trying to climb out? And, it only takes a second, and you can be HOLDING the cart and not be able to stop it from tipping over either. I've seen it happen numerous times (I used to work in retail).
The fact is -- ACCIDENTS happen..
Remember, those who live in glass houses...
This was a horrible tragedy, and no one here knows exactly what happened. Why are people so insistent on finger pointing at this time?
Prayers for this child's family...
Way to go! LOL That was great!
You are being totally irrational and making false claims because I think that even you are realizing that you are losing the argument.
If anything can happen at any time, that is all the more reason that you keep the kids under close supervision. especially at that age and especially in an enviroment where the conditions are less than ideal for watching them.
No.
I'm so sorry this happened to this child and family. My prayers go out to them.
When my son was 5, he was the spitting image of Red Chief. He hated to hold my hand in the mall and elsewhere, constantly wanting to wander off by himself. I'm ashamed to report I have often said to myself, "If he gets kidnapped, they'll have him back in my arms in five minutes - tops!"
BTW, has anyone figured out what a floor mounted mirror is??
You're serious?
You wrote: But it should be. I was allowed to be on my own lots of time (from about 4 on), because I was well behaved, and could be trusted to come back.
It should be, but it just isn't. I was obedient, I was allowed out on my own, the run of the neighborhood, even taking our bikes downtown to the Dairy Queen.
That was the 50's and 60's. Things are not the same today. Sad, but true.
Maybe, maybe not. We don't know, we weren't there. We don't know what caused the mirror to fall.
I have a 25cubic foot upright freezer that is taller than I am (I'm 5'10"). A few weeks ago the door came off as I openned it.....had my 8 year old been with me when it happened, and in her normal position when we put in or take things out of the freezer, it would have hit her before I could have held it up. Does that make me a negligent parent? Had she been standing there would I be the one at fault?
Thankfully she was outside playing and my husband was in the house and was able to help me.........but I had no clue that door was going to fall. Just the day before she had gotten something out of the freezer. I would have been devastated had it happened then, but I would not expect anyone to take the attitude toward me that has been taken toward the mother in this situation.
Apparently my expectations of people are way off base.
In todays world, parents must be extra vigilant. Back in the day, you could count on other adults in the store (or park, wherever) to alert you or help the child.
Today you better NOT count on any adult stranger or any teenage stranger even NEAR your child. No one will help you and your child but yourself.
