Child Killed By Falling Mirror At Wal-Mart

INDIANAPOLIS -- A 3-year-old boy was fatally injured when a floor-mounted mirror fell on him at an Indianapolis Wal-Mart.

Police said Christopher Antonio was apparently playing near the 5-foot-tall mirror in the children's section of the store Saturday evening when it fell at the store in the 3200 block of 86th Street.

The boy was with his 5-year-old sister and his mother. The mother told police she was about 5 feet away from her son when she heard a loud crash.

Police said it took two people to pull the mirror off the boy.

In this case the child that was killed was probably too little to have managed it on his own- but his older sibling might have been involved, or other children in the store.

Walmart needs a posting outside that says children should be watched at all times, and kept under control.

I've had a few of them run out in front of my loaded shopping cart before..little buggers! Mom and Dad need to be careful. Other peoples children are not mine to watch! - or Walmarts

Huh? Seriously. The story says that it's based purely on what the mom reported. How do we know what really occurred?

I don't think that Mom hurt the kid on purpose. I think this was a tragic case of parent inattention.

Whats to debate, you're a perfect parent who can / will not concede that amongst us mortals its impossible to catch every second of every trip to a store with two kids under the age of five..

Our son got into chairs stacked on a cart at church. They started to fall over. He was fine. Our granddaughters are similar.

I don't care if people pick on me. I hold hands with my granddaughters in the parking lot. My view of children's common sense is very pessimistic. I remember my own foolishness too well.

Some of this conversation just boils down to BIOLOGICAL differences between mothers and fathers - and how it affects their view of parenting. Most mothers will do everything in their power to protect their children from every possible danger. Most fathers will look at their 10-year-old and ask "Don't you have a job yet?"

Seriously, Dads are there to counteract the mother's smothering lest the kids grow up to be basket cases (and unable to take care of themselves). We encourage our children to take risks (yes, from a very young age).

As a total aside, this is why it is ideal for children to have a male and a female parent. One needs both outlooks to develop properly. AND Neither parent's outlook should be the dominant one.

What if the mirror had fallen on both of them?

If the mirror fell over of its own accord, it would be Walmarts fault. I've already said that.

If it fell due to an unattended child/children playing on it, the fault can not belong to Walmart.

She knows how she was raised. She knows what she was taught. Again, she was pinged to this thread to confirm how she was raised. If you engaged her in conversation and got trounced, oh well.

Being an attentive parent is not being a perfect one. You may descend into insults if you wish. There was a time when kids stayed by their parents and were quiet in stores. It was called obedience. I remember that time.

If you claim you never took your eyes off of one of your kids long enough for something bad to them to have happened you're a damn liar..

If you will admit that at least once or twice it was the grace of God and not your perfect parents eyes that preserved your kids from danger you need to back off of this mother who lost her kid..

The point I was trying to make is not to fault your grandfather for not being perfect, you knowingly disobeyed him (at 5 I bet you picked your moment to do it ;)..

I was a little one in the 50's. You behaved back then. My Mom used to try on clothes and we obediently sat on the bench outside the dressing room. All 3 of us, 5 and under. She would come out and model for us. It was a treat to see our lovely Mother put on a "fashion show" for us. If we fidgeted, it was over. We hardly breathed.
