'Israel would accept NATO on border'
The Jerusalem Post ^ | July 23, 2006 | Jerusalem Post

Defense Minister Amir Peretz said Sunday that Israel would accept a temporary international force, preferably headed by NATO, deployed along the Lebanese border to keep Hizbullah guerrillas away from Israel, according to officials in Peretz's office.

"Israel's goal is to see the Lebanese army deployed along the border with Israel, but we understand that we are taking about a weak army and that in the midterm period Israel will have to accept a multinational force," he said according to his office.

Peretz made the comments during a closed meeting with visiting German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier.

US President George W. Bush's Chief of Staff, Josh Bolten said Sunday that international peacekeepers might be needed in Lebanon to help end the fighting between Israel and Hizbullah, but that US troop involvement was unlikely.

Even the SPD-chief says that German soldiers in Lebanon are possible. Because Germany has so good relations with Israel we need to help them. The holocaust is not an excuse to provide help.

Target we will be, (as we already are.) But who else can do the job? In fact, before the present war started, NPR ran an interview with a pro-Palestinian group working to raise money, expertise, whatever in the US for Palestine-to-be. One thing they wanted was US soldiers on the border, boots on the ground, to protect Palestine from Israel. Interesting.

You´re wrong. Germany is not allowed to start or participate in a war on its own, by its own constitution. But if such a war is approved by a "sytem of collective security provisions", it´s alright. German Air Force jets dropped bombs on Belgrade 1999, German medical troops were in Somalia 1994, and elite combat soldiers were fighting along with US troops in the hills of Afghanistan as early as October 2001. Right now, German soldiers are also in Congo. So, it could be very well that we´re going to see German soldiers in south Lebanon in a few months or so.

Cap'n Ed at Captain's Quarters hits the nail on the head:

By requesting a NATO force,
"Israel's message to the West was clear: either put up or shut up."

We will see. So far It's just talking. Besides that's only "post-war" scenario.

"Because Germany has so good relations with Israel we need to help them. The holocaust is not an excuse to provide help."

Don't count on any gratefulness. Both sides will be throwing shit at these "NATO forces".

Correct. Israel needs a secure border, the UN has had it's chance. Hezbollah has found an ally it seems in UNFIL.

NATO couldn't go into IRAQ but now they can go into Lebanon?

The UN has only a status as observer. That´s not a mandate to provide security in the region.

When Israel has cleaned the area from Hizbollah, NATO can control south Lebanon so that the terrorists won´t come back. Of course, it´s not NATO´s task to eliminate Hizbollah.

Let me make this clear. Hizbollah being defeated in Lebanon is not victory. Syria and Iran is why Israel will loose the war.

The UN has been borderline hostile to Israel and the United States in their complicancy with terrorists. We can thank the Lord for the good work of Ambassador Bolten as he looks after US interests in that vipers nest.

Whether or not NATO will provide a buffer on Israel's northern border is to be seen. I think that if it does, that will draw the terrorists to attack them so they better be ready to fight.

I hope so to.

But the politicians of the last fifty years have developed the losing strategy of talking to an enemy while he is killing your people.

Talking in the middle of a gunfight is a sure way to end up with you and your people a dead loser.

PARIS, July 24 — Support is building quickly for an international military force to be placed in southern Lebanon, but there remains a small problem: where will the troops come from?

The United States has ruled out its soldiers participating, NATO says it is overstretched, Britain feels its troops are overcommitted and Germany says it is willing to participate only if Hezbollah, the Lebanese militia which it would police, agrees to it, a highly unlikely development.

“All the politicians are saying, ‘Great, great’ to the idea of a force, but no one is saying whose soldiers will be on the ground,” said one senior European official. “Everyone will volunteer to be in charge of the logistics in Cyprus.”
