The far left magazine Slate said he came off very good, and effective during the speech.
The Slate article is worth reading.
Blacks that lean republican hate the NAACP, speaking to them alienates the Blacks that are sitting on the fence.
Bushes numbers among Blacks were higher when he didn't speak to this group.
I listened to the entire speech on the radio (Fox channel). The delivery and content were very effective in my opinion. I could hear a hecklar for about a minute or two in the background. By the applause he seemed to be well received.
I enjoyed reading it at GOP.com, and I liked it. Rush wanted him to stump for votes for Steele and Blackwell. I imagine he did, in his own way. And now the House takes up school vouchers, again. Coincidence?
I heard several snippets of the speech on the Laura Ingraham radio show -- and she was as pumped-up about how GOOD the President sounded (as well as the content of his speech) as I was! :-)
Otherwise, Newsday has faithfully published their daily anti-Bush 'letter to the editor' screed which is specious and non-specific in its complaints, taking generalities where no generality has gone before:
Bush considers himself above law
(Newsday does this on a daily basis, there is always at least ONE anti-Bush rant in their letters ... my guess is that they manufacture those letters using fictitious names)
Bushes numbers among Blacks were higher when he didn't speak to this group.
Slate has a committed, liberal democrat readership, so their analysis is from a political point of view, and they thought he came off pretty good.
I believe the speech will make him look safe to moderate white voters, and give cover to moderate black voters that are looking for the courage to vote outside of the Democrat party.
He talked to them in the past already. I don't recall the exact numbers, but that was everyone's observation at the time.
Talking to the NAACP lost him black votes.
Think of it this way, does Bush really think that the NAACP isn't hated by a certain percentage of blacks?
Everyone hates one group or another, it has to be at least 20 percent that either dislike or actively hate the NAACP.
thanks for posting it.
He talked to them in the past already.
How can he lose support before when this was the first time to speak to the NAACP as President? I didn't know that Pres Bush was up for reelection either.
The speech uses the term "African American" 19 times and the term "black" once.
Has "black" gone the way of "negro" and "colored"?
Yes, good writers and his delivery ability has also improved over the years.
