Hi Carlo!

Just pinging you to this thread. I'm on your ping list and seem to recall you have worked as a chef on the crusie lines. Any thoughts or experiences you could provide?

(Yes, I know food and hydraulics are different things. If I'm wrong about the cruise line thing, I'll just smack myself on the side of my head with a plate of prosciutto!) :>)

Hey, I love tin foil as much as everyone, but when the first report of this was posted here, someone was asking about rudders, and how cruise ships steer, so I did a google search and found this old Coast Guard report of an earlier similar accident - LINK for those who are interested.

That thing would have to have one tremendous rudder to make a turn as described. It just does not sound probable. I await the experts who often show up on this board when something like this needs explaining. My experience on big boats (40 years old) tells me that these babies do not turn on dimes, even if it is attempted.Maybe if bow thrusters were activated as the helm is put hard over??

This article is pure speculation. Not everything has to be terrorism.

Cruise ships sometimes have stabilizing systems to maintain the smoothest possible ride in rough seas. As this ship was only one its second cruise, it seems at least equally plausible that a technical fault in the stabilizing system could have caused the accident.

After reading 123 posts, I sure feel all warm and fuzzy about cruising. I just made reservations on Carnival Conquest for October!

GAK!

So why don't they hire Americans or Hispanics?

I wouldn't be caught on a ship like this with the people described. It was scary enough being in a hotel in Eastern Europe with these people cleaning the rooms. (I was probably the only one who noticed and have openly said anything.)

Sounds like a union/labor wind up speech...

Or an "Outsourcing is evil, evil, evil" whine...

"Many experienced seamen think they are an accident waiting to happen with their huge sail-like sides ready to catch a freak wind or wave and little natural stability."

There's a lot of cruise ships out there and has been for a while. I haven't heard of any capsizing due to sharp turns or instability.

Nice theory, but I highly doubt there was a conspiracy! This was only the third voyage for this ship. Although you mentioned a build date of 2003, I believe the ship is newer than that. There are a multitude of reasons why this was most likely a mechanical malfunction.

As to the Indonesian crew -- I recently went on an Alaskan cruise (Holland America .. one of the finer cruise lines. Not cruddy old Princess or Carnival) that was almost entirely staffed with an Indonesian crew. These were the hardest working, kindest, most gentle crew I have ever seen. It is easy to say "Indonesia .. don't they have a lot of Muslims?," but you can't say that because many Indonesians are Muslims, the ship crews must be therefore be militants.

While I am not naive and think everyone should remain vigilant, I also know that the majority of these Indonesian crews are made up of wonderful, hard working people.

Cruise ships are NOT top-heavy. They may appear that way to the uneducated eye, but the heavy metal is down below.

Do some folks think that Cynthia McKinney designs today's cruise ships?

I can't figure out why anyone would want to go anywhere on one of these things? If you don't get the norovirus, you could get kidnapped or thrown overboard and now you could experience the Poseidon adventure up close and personal. And your room attendant is named Mohammed!!

No thanks, I can thing of fabulous vacations on land.
