Pull Plug On High Gas Prices
cbs ^ | 7/18/06

If you're fed up with paying high gas prices, Hybrid Technologies says it has a solution for you.

The company is out with an "electric smart car" that runs on a lithium battery.

The company's co-founder, Richard Griffiths, pointed out to The Early Show co-anchor Rene Syler Tuesday that that's the same type of battery you'll find in cell phones, PDAs, computers, "pretty much anything we use now that's a portable electronic device."

Griffiths showed Syler how you simply plug the car in, literally, to a conventional 110 volt outlet.

"If you completely drain the battery," Griffiths said to Syler, "it's like your cell phone, if you drain the battery, a full charge is five to six hours. Normally, people won't drain the entire battery, so maybe one to two hours at night. Basically, it's like, 'Honey, did you take out the garbage and plug in the car?' It's kind of a new way of thinking. It's a plug-in hybrid. It uses absolutely no gas.

"On a single charge, you can go up to 120 miles and, depending how you drive, 150 miles."

"It's very, very small, though," Syler observed. "I am thinking safety. How does it crash test?"

"It has a three-star crash test rating," Griffiths responded, "and it has air bag systems, five air bags, three in the front. It's like a walnut. It's actually a very safe car. This is a city commuter car, so it's not a car that you'll necessarily be driving on the highway every day. So we're not looking at high speeds, necessarily."

Last time I checked, gravity was free

Yes and it equally pulls on water flowing downhill as well as water being pumped uphill.

"Does it go 120 mph and 400 miles on a charge have AC and heat?"

Does it go 0-120 in 14 seconds, and have 400 rwhp like my GTO? Otherwise, I'm sticking to the Dino fuel too.

"I love hydroelectric power."

The old fashioned water wheels only used part of a stream to run the wheel. The rest could run free.

Wouldn't there be some way to install generating devices in a portion of a stream or river that would not block the entire river.

Yeah, but where does the energy comes from at the power station? Usually it's some kind of carbohydrate

LOL, I think the word you are looking for is hydrocarbon.

I've noticed a ridge covered with large commercial windmills on a ridge southeast of Idaho Falls on some recent visits. Idaho is reliably windy. The solar approach really wouldn't be all that great at my latitude (averaged over the year).

Products like this are useless.

Now, they DO have some new plug-in kits that will be soon or are coming out for the Toyota Prius.

THESE are worth something since you can STILL USE GAS as a back-up so your range is not limited. However, this technology effectively increases your mpg to 100 or more since you rarely have to use fuel except for long trips.

They aren't cheap though; 10 grand or more for the kit. It would be like buying a whole new car. But, perhaps if the Prius were cheaper, I would consider it worth it.

The mutual attraction between masses won't cost you anything, but you still have to separate them to harness the energy. That isn't free. Just climb the stairwell of a 100 story building and ask if you feel tired. You've just converted food energy into gravitational potential.

If he invested in that scheme it's probably not wise instructing him to climb tall buildings.

Good points on the insurance.

Also, older cars cost less to insure.

If you have to have the latest and greatest, insurance will be much higher.

If you can't afford the insurance, get an old clunker and don't have collision. It will be much more affordable then.

That may be more expensive than using gas.

For my neighbor, that's exactly what happened. He was in "Hog Heaven" until he got his power bill.

I had to loan him some $$ to keep the juice on while he caught up with the electric bill situation as he was totally unprepared for that.

On the other hand, it drives great, has good pickup and is a "stealth vehicle"....you probably won't hear it coming.

A lot of people don't realize just how much energy there is in gasoline. If you took a glass of gasoline the size of a "d" battery and compared it to a "d" battery, the difference in stored energy is staggering.

Oh, you and I DEFINITELY agree on that. If it was cheap, it would be great. And let's be frank here. The maintenance costs of electric motors is far less than internal combustion engines. Say goodbye to oil changes, spark plug changes, etc.

But if it were economically feasable (wind powered recharging, solar cells, etc.), for those who need to take a lot of short trips as I mentioned before, it is a viable option.

The Empire Hancock building features 12 diving boards so there's never a wait. A splatter proof plastic bag with your name on it. A fine restaurant for your last meal. ...with apologies to Cheech and Chong.

Nope, not for me, and I doubt whether a cold car in the winter would appeal to many americans. But you don't have to worry about it starting!
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Trust me, there will come a time when it will not start. Electric forklifts have been in use for a long time and there are times when they will not run, even with a fully charged battery. Electrical circuitry breaks down eventually.

What vehicle does your neighbor have? I wasn't aware of any electrics on the market today, and plugins are almost nonexistant still...

Sorry slick, process is proprietary.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

The process you describe does not exist. Either you are leaving something out or you have been misled or you find it amusing to propose such marvels simply to observe the reactions of others. I am no physicist but I learned enough in grade school to know that what you describe does not exist.
