As I said, I sympathize with anyone whose jobs may take them to such places. It's the dilitantes who just want a cool new place to vacation that I have a problem with. But even still, not everyone working abroad is forced to. Many take those assignments because of the plumb pay. Sure, who wouldn't want that. But you understand with the bigger pay comes bigger risks. Sorry, but it's not a perfect world and one has to know they assume a lot of risks taking an assignment in a place like the Middle East, and yes that means maybe being placed on hold with United Airlines a little longer than you may like. Yes, maybe I would be singing a different tune but frankly I'd not take an overseas assignment in the Middle East and if it meant losing my job so be it. Better that than losing my life.

Remember the late 70's when there was a mass amount of Americans heading to Saudi Arabia to make $$$$$. Our family almost went, I thank God above we didn't. People are willing to move for the money.

I get some of what you are saying.

On some other things, our viewpoints don't converge. Sorry. It's been nice debating about it though, and I appreciate your viewpoint. We probably could agree that the "It's Bush's fault" is over the top and is just political, though.

You're asking the right questions. I hope the media asks them as well.

Exactly. We've become a country that believes the president is a god who by merely snapping his fingers can overcome logistical difficulties in moving humans, cargo and transportation equipment across vast distances and into areas where a hurricane or an airstrike is about to hit. Getting transportation for 25,000 people isn't an overnight proposition. Anyway, despite my cynicism, I hope everyone who wishes to leave Lebanon gets out unharmed.

They won't. They just want to blame Bush. It's what animates everything they cover, "How can we turn this to somehow make Bush look bad?"

This must be an old pic. The CH-54 was to be replaced with the H-60.

Why to evacuate? It is terrorists who are being bombed

To reduce the number of potential hostages. The Hizbollah use innocents as armor.

I'm not sure, but I think it may be more complicated than that. I was thinking that way several days ago, but from what I've heard, most of these people are either visiting relatives (and the state department updated its travel warnings lately) or either live there permanently as American citizens. I would have to think that the reason the State Dept has emphasized getting the names of the people needing evacuation is to run checks on them. Personally, I really hope they are doing that! And getting them to sign prommisary notes about payments. At first, I as appalled. But now that I've learned that most people are either living there on America passports or are visiting against the advise of our State Dept, I am GLAD that our government is doing this.

There is a difference in their being civilian. If they were wearing military uniforms, the situation would be entirely different. As time has gone on, it seems to me that we are probably doing this correctly. Time will tell as more is revealed.

Unlike Houston, TX, Cyprus will only have this influx for a few weeks...not permanently.

1979 4 November - Islamic militants take 52 Americans hostage inside the US embassy in Tehran. They demand the extradition of the Shah, in the US at the time for medical treatment, to face trial in Iran.

Any more wise A$$ questions?

Feels like a flashback to 1979 in Iran...

Nah... they took us out in C130s IIRC. Definitely not choppers.

Deserving of its own thread. Filtering process could be a reason for delay. Real Americans first(and maybe only).

Welll, I'm sure he's the expert on the load capacity of at least one thing. And that might have something to do with a stallion. Or maybe a gerbil.

LOL again...yer gettin' bad Rock.

Did we have a bad experience lately? :)
