U.S. sends ship escorted by navy destroyer to evacuate Americans from Lebanon
17, 2006 - 3:57 pm
BEIRUT (CP) - U.S. marines raced Monday to complete evacuation plans for thousands of Americans in Lebanon, many destined to flee the battle zone aboard a rented cruise ship. Hundreds of French citizens and other Europeans, many in tears, boarded a ferry to Cyprus.
About 15,000 of the estimated 25,000 U.S. citizens in Lebanon have registered with the U.S. Embassy in Beirut, but not all appeared to be trying to get out. Only 64 Americans were known to have departed by late Monday.
Twenty-one of them flew out aboard a CH-53 Super Stallion helicopter, departing from the U.S. Embassy compound to a British military base in Cyprus, the Pentagon said.
Some Americans have driven to Syria in recent days and flown out of the region from there, despite U.S. government warnings that the road journey was too dangerous.
The Pentagon said it hired a private cruise liner, the Orient Queen, and would send at least one warship as an escort when the evacuation ship docks at the Lebanese capital Tuesday.
Poised to help carry out the evacuation were at least 100 members of the North Carolina-based 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit on board amphibious landing ships, including the USS Iwo Jima, sitting off the Cypriot coast.
On the sixth day of its offensive in Lebanon, Israel was exempting evacuation ships from its blockade of Lebanon.
...
At the Pentagon, spokesman Bryan Whitman said the Lebanese-owned Orient Queen, an eight-deck cruise liner will take evacuees to Cyprus.
The destroyer USS Gonzalez will escort it and the Iwo Jima may join the operation as well, Whitman said.
The approximately 700 French citizens and other Europeans left aboard the Ierapetra, a Greek cruise liner, that had docked in Beirut. Evacuees arrived at the port in buses and were seen off by French Prime Minister Dominique de Villepin, who met his Lebanese counterpart earlier Monday.
France, which ruled Lebanon as a colony until 1943, has more than 20,000 citizens in Lebanon. Most of those who left Monday were of Lebanese origin.

When Bush replied that Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice would take on that task, Blair made a comment that hinted at the power hierarchy between the U.S. and Britain.
"Obviously if she goes out she's got to succeed, as it were," Blair said, "whereas I can go out and just talk."
The suggestion - astounding in its bluntness - appeared to be that when Washington speaks it must mean business, but Britain can get away with airing proposals and absorbing rejection.
Blair's banquet-table activism contrasted with the more relaxed manner of other G-8 leaders.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel was pictured chewing on food while looking over notes, while Italian premier Romano Prodi - who himself seeks a role as Mideast facilitator - in this case contented himself with smiling benignly as he waited for the meal to start.

that could really hurt Blair if the Brits see it that way, they already call him Bush's puppet
Did Matthews say all Middle East troubles began not centuries ago as the Bible and history have it; but rather as the MSM tell us, in 2000 when President Bush was elected?
Recap please, hubby has hijacked TV and is watching Dog Bounty Hunter....yuck!
to treat the evacuation like the fall of Saigon meets Katrina.
Yes, we must stop the killing because everyone will just hate us and it's all the fault of the US and Israel. They will all want revenge because Israel chooses to defend itself and we support them. Note: do not put Chrissy in charge of anything serious.
I swear, Weasley Clark is going to have his own show on Fox soon. Every time I turn around, there he is. UGH!!!
Blair is on his way out anyway....he is supposed to call an election sometime soon.
Got some things need doing here, WWIII has to take a backseat.
I'll be in and out of this thread most of the night, best bet for contact is through Freepmail.
Hang tough.
I know. Chris Matthews is an idiot. He should have done a chorus of Kumbaya at the end.
Not only border stockpiles running low but it looks like the Israelis are getting more effective at taking out stockpiles elsewhere. Hizbullah's options may be running low, i'd imagine they keep those Zedzels pretty well hidden and still have a number of them left (reports are they have 20+). The only other battleground (i distinguish this b/c there are Hizbullah terror cells outside of lebanon) deterrent is their anti-tank tactics, which reports indicate are also fairly sophisticated. Unfortunately for Hizbullah, the IDF isn't giving them the opportunity to employ those tactics, yet. My biggest fear is that a few of those Hizzbullah Zedzels are really last ditch weapons with chem warheads (i'm not even sure they are chem capable, but given the size of the warhead it sure a possibility)
The amazing Clintonian General who bombed civilian trains, rusting hulks, and painted-to-look-like-bridges to destroy Yugoslavia....you know the guy:
Preaching that the Israelis should not be attempting anything they's successfully done so far without first filling the air with UAV's, flooding Lebanon with Special Forces to identify where the bad guys are, and generally doing it precisely the way they are and he did not.
Fortunately, I have other things to do, outside, where I can scream all I want.
He said what Bahbah said...about Israel and America...in post #1989....
And then he said that HE prefers Bill Clinton's approach...and then quoted what Clinton said in the last few days about needing to "get people together to work things out"...
I KNOW that quote by Clinton was probably quoted here on this thread...and it was too long for me to remember.
When he started out talking rather sarcastically about the closeness of the relationship between Israel and America...and then said he preferred CLINTON'S outlook..
I didn't pay attention I was in such shock.
he just reminds me of 'that guy' you always knew that needed a good a-kicking
