"Nothing is so consoling, so piercing, so thrilling, so overcoming, as the Mass, said as it is among us. I could attend Mass forever, and not be tired. It is not a mere form of words; it is a great action. The greatest action that can be on earth. It is. . .the vocation of the Eternal."

"All whatsoever you do in word or work, do all in the Name of the Lord Jesus Christ,
giving thanks to God and the Father by Jesus Christ our Lord," --- Blessed Apostle Saint Paul

T he feast of Carmel dates back to the time of the Old Testament for Carmel is the mountain of the renewal of the Covenant and Divine intervention through Elijah the Prophet around 900 BC as revealed in Isaiah, Jeremiah and 1 Kings. Carmel, which lies on the border between Samaria and Galilee 20 miles from Nazareth, is derived from the Hebrew Karem el which means "garden" or "orchard" and "vine of God." It has become a symbol of grace and that is why it so so fitting that the rain Elijah [Elias] prayed for came at Carmel as the "little cloud" (3 Kings 18: 44) turned into a mighty rain that wiped out the drought.

So also in the New Covenant God sent "a little cloud" in the person of His Blessed Mother Mary to rain upon mankind the graces God bestows as the Mediatrix of all graces. In the 5th Century, Chrysippus of Jerusalem wrote of the Blessed Virgin, "Hail, Cloud of Rain that offers drink to the souls of the Saints." It was around the 12th Century that Carmel first became a place of veneration toward the Mother of God and monks took up sanctuary there living a holy rule. It was the beginning of the Carmelite Order founded in the Holy Land in 1154 by Saint Berthold and dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary. Their original name was Brothers of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Mount Carmel. The original rule was set down by the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem in 1209. The Crusades were instrumental in bringing the Carmelites to Europe through the work of Saint Simon Stock whose feast this date the Church formally celebrated. This English monk learned through private revelation of locutions and visions from Our Lady that he was to join an order not known in Britain, yet dedicated to her, and was asked to wait until a few White Friars, as they were called, came to England with the returning Crusaders. Then he was guided to join this Order of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. Because of his holiness and reverence and, because of the Providence of God through Our Lady, Simon was chosen the Prior-General of the Order at Aylesford, England in 1245. But it wasn't to be easy. Many persecutions arose against the Carmelites and always Simon went in filial obedience to Our Lady for consolation and direction. This led him to the famous apparition at the White Friar's convent in Cambridge, England on July 16, 1251 in which Our Lady appeared to him, presenting him with the Brown Scapular as an outward sign of protection, telling Simon, "Here is the privilege that I grant to you and to all the children of Carmel, whoever dies clothed in this habit shall be saved." Many miracles ensued and the Brown Scapular became legendary as miraculous protection for all who wore it and it spread rapidly through the centuries.

Though it is not "magical" and one must be in a state of grace to receive the merits inherent in wearing the Scapular, it is another sign of God's infinite Mercy that He is with us always. The granting of the Scapular gave Simon the fortitude to reorganize the Carmelites into mendicant friars similar to the Franciscans which had begun a few decades prior. Simon died at Bordeaux in 1265 while evangelizing and establishing more Carmelite houses in France. The feast of St. Simon Stock and Our Lady of Carmel were first introduced into the Church in the late 1370's in commemoration of Pope Honorius III's approval of the Carmelite Rule. Over the next several centuries laxity set in and it wasn't until the 16th Century that Saint Teresa of Avila and Saint John of the Cross reformed the Order, setting up two branches for both men and women: the Discalced and Calced. One branch was dedicated to contemplative, devoting themselves in prayers of intercession for the other branch of Carmelites who were active in the world in missionary activities.

In 1726 Pope Benedict XIII introduced this feast into the Roman Calendar. The Carmelites' ideal became world-famous through the 1925 canonization of "the Little Flower" - Saint Theresa of Lisieux (1873-1897) by Pope Pius XI. Yes, the "little rain cloud" personified through Our Lady has brought the reign of God to countless millions through the Providence of Carmel.

EPISTLE ¤ Romans 6:3-11

Léctio Epístolæ beáti Pauli Apóstoli ad Romanos
Fratres, Quicúmque baptizáti sumus in Christo Jesum, in morte ipsius baptizáti sumus.

Lesson from the Epistle of Blessed Apostle Saint Paul to the Romans.
Brethren, All we who are baptized in Christ Jesus are baptized in His death. For we are buried together with Him by baptism unto death that as Christ is risen from the dead by the glory of the Father, so we also may walk in the newness of life. For if we have been planted together in the likeness of His death, we shall also be in the likeness of His resurrection. Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with Him, that the body of sin may be destroyed, and that we may serve sin no longer. For he that is dead is justified from sin. Now if we be dead with Christ, we believe that we shall live also together with Christ. Knowing that Christ, rising again from the dead, dieth now no more, death shall no more have dominion over Him. For in that He died to sin, He died once; but in that He liveth, He liveth unto God. So do you also reckon yourselves to be dead indeed to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

GOSPEL - Blessed Apostle Saint Matthew 8:1-9

† Sequentia sancti Evangelii secundum Matthaeum.

† Continuation of the Holy Gospel according to Blessed Apostle Saint Matthew
AAt that time, when there was a great multitude with Jesus, and they had nothing to eat, calling His disciples together, He saith to them: "I have compassion on the multitude, for behold they have now been with Me three days, and have nothing to eat and if I shall send them away fasting to their home, they will faint in the way: for some of them came from afar off." And His disciples answered Him: "From whence can any one fill them here with bread in the wilderness?" And he asked them: "How many loaves have ye?" Who said: "Seven." And He commanded the people to sit down on the ground. And taking the seven loaves, giving thanks, He broke and gave to His disciples to set before the people, And they had a few little fishes, and He blessed them, and commanded them to be set before' them. And they did eat, and were filled: and they took up that which was left of the fragments, seven baskets: and they that had eaten, were about four thousand: and He sent them away."

Homily The Sixth Sunday After Pentecost
Missa Dóminus Fortitúdo

16 July 2006 A.D.
by Father Louis J. Campbell
"This Perverse Generation"

Acts 2:40

In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Ghost. Amen.

As the crisis in the Mideast and North Korea threaten to break out into a full scale World War III at any time, we must return to the inspiration of the Scriptures to realize there is much work to do in saving souls and that peace cannot be achieved by man alone. Because man has the audacity to think so, including the conciliar church which panders to the UN for religious liberty, this time of tribulation intensifies because we have indeed become a perverse generation. Why? Because we have abandoned Christ our King and the truths of divine revelation, abandoned the divinely ordained Sacred Deposit of the Faith in favor of Universal Salvation. Such thinking that all are saved is pure heresy.

"One of the greatest spiritual dangers we face today is the widespread belief that everyone is destined for Heaven. In the words of Father Robert D. Smith: 'All heresy, from Gnosticism in the first century to Arianism in the fourth; from Islam in the seventh to Lutheranism in the sixteenth, boils down to the notion that at least some people are so loved by God that they do not have to repent of sins against the Commandments to be saved. Some people do not have to repent at all. And this notion is all too likely to lead to the logical conclusion that, after all, everyone who has ever lived must be saved. This is the final state of heresy… belief in universal salvation. Universalism. Today, this belief in universal salvation seems to be itself universal' ('A Heaven Which Makes No Sense,' from The Other Side of Christ, Issue 25)."

Note: In Father Louis Campbell's sermon for the Sixth Sunday After Pentecost, he focuses on today's Epistle from Blessed Apostle Saint Paul to the Romans in which Saint Paul, through the Gentiles, reminds us of what is necessary to have eternal life. We must be crucified with Christ for there can be no victory without the Cross, no resurrection of the body unless we die to sin and shroud our souls in the white linen of sanctifying grace. Those who persist in altering the Commandments to meet their instant gratifications or wayward thinking that man can reach Heaven outside of Holy Mother Church are in for a big surprise come Judgment time when our Lord will say, 'depart from me, you workers of iniquity, for I know ye not.' Father reminds us of what Blessed Apostle Saint Peter admonished in his very first sermon 'save yourselves from this perverse generation' and perverse man has become because he has not paid heed to Peter's other words about the wiles of the devil who goes about like a roaring lion seeking whom he might devour. Those not wanting to be the next meal for this mangy beast would do well to heed the words of Sacred Scripture and learn; something the conciliar church has refused to do in continuing down the course of no return in promoting universal salvation.

In the first "Sunday sermon" ever to be preached in the Catholic Church, Saint Peter admonished his hearers: "Save yourselves from this perverse generation" ( Acts 2:40 ). After the sin of Adam and Eve we were a condemned race with no hope of salvation. We were a "perverse generation," striving to cope with the loss of Sanctifying Grace and the preternatural gifts, while the gates of Paradise were closed: "The Lord God put him out of the garden of Eden to till the ground from which he was taken. He drove out the man; and at the east of the garden of Eden He placed the Cherubim, and the flaming sword, which turned every way, to guard the way to the tree of life" ( Genesis 3:23,24 ).

But God promised to send a Redeemer, a promise which was fulfilled when the Blessed Virgin Mary consented to be the Mother of the Word, Jesus Christ, God's only-begotten Son. Those who believe in Him and obey His commands are rescued from the "perverse generation" and become heirs of Heaven.

People in every age need "re-generation" through Baptism, which separates them from the worldly generation which is headed for perdition. "Now this I say, brethren," says Blessed Apostle Saint Paul, "that flesh and blood can obtain no part in the kingdom of God, neither shall corruption have any part in incorruption" (1 Corinthians 15:50). Saint Paul explains it as a mystical death in today's Epistle: "All who have been baptized into Christ Jesus have been baptized into His death. For we were buried with Him by means of Baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ has arisen from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we also may walk in newness of life" ( Romans 6:4 ).

Yet while we live in this world we are in constant spiritual warfare in an effort to save our souls. We must work out our salvation "in fear and trembling," as Saint Paul said. There is no vacation from the spiritual combat, for the devil is at work day and night "seeking someone to devour" ( Blessed Apostle Saint Peter ( 1 ) 5:8 ). "Resist him, steadfast in the faith," says St. Peter, "knowing that the same suffering befalls your brethren all over the world" ( 1 Saint Peter 5:9 ).

One of the greatest spiritual dangers we face today is the widespread belief that everyone is destined for Heaven. In the words of Father Robert D. Smith: "All heresy, from Gnosticism in the first century to Arianism in the fourth; from Islam in the seventh to Lutheranism in the sixteenth, boils down to the notion that at least some people are so loved by God that they do not have to repent of sins against the Commandments to be saved. Some people do not have to repent at all. And this notion is all too likely to lead to the logical conclusion that, after all, everyone who has ever lived must be saved. This is the final state of heresy… belief in universal salvation. Universalism. Today, this belief in universal salvation seems to be itself universal" ("A Heaven Which Makes No Sense," from The Other Side of Christ, Issue 25). .

The prophet of Universal Salvation within the Catholic Church in our time was the theologian Hans Urs von Balthasar (d. 1988), and his best known disciples were Karol Wojtyla and Josef Ratzinger, better known as John Paul II and Benedict XVI, both of whom had the highest esteem for von Balthasar, favoring his speculations that all men would eventually be saved. Theologians debate the matter on the grounds that the Church has never declared anyone to be in Hell, not even Judas.

The existence of Hell is taught with absolute clarity in Holy Scripture, so there is no need for the Church to declare that any one person is damned. The doctrine of Universal Salvation is a cruel doctrine because it disarms those who should be working out their salvation "in fear and trembling," causing them to lose their souls. Concerning Judas, Our Lord makes it clear that he was not saved: "The Son of Man indeed goes His way, as it is written of Him; but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It were better for that man if he had not been born" (Saint Matthew 26:24 ). Not one of His chosen disciples perished, said Our Lord, >"....except the son of perdition, in order that the Scripture might be fulfilled...." (Saint John 17:12 ).

Christ teaches the doctrine of Hell in words that are strong and images that burn themselves into the memory, making it clear that the torments of Hell are eternal: "Enter by the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and many there are who enter that way. How narrow the gate and close the way that leads to life! And few there are who find it" ( Saint Matthew 7:13,14 ). "If thy hand is an occasion of sin to thee," He says, "cut it off! It is better for thee to enter into life maimed, than, having two hands, to go into hell, into the unquenchable fire, 'Where their worm dies not, and the fire is not quenched'" ( Saint Mark 9:42,43 ). On Judgment Day He will say to those on His left: "Depart from me, accursed ones, into the everlasting fire which was prepared for the devil and his angels" ( Saint Matthew 25:41 ).

There is no mistaking Saint Paul's thoughts on the subject: "Do you not know that the unjust will not possess the kingdom of God? Do not err; neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor the effeminate, nor sodomites, nor thieves, nor the covetous, nor drunkards, nor the evil-tongued, nor the greedy will possess the kingdom of God" (1 Corinthians 6:9,10 ).

Saint Jude is in full agreement: "But these men deride whatever they do not know; and the things they know by instinct like the dumb beasts, become for them a source of destruction. Woe to them!… for whom the storm of darkness has been reserved forever" ( Saint Jude 10:13).

Saaint John's words in his Apocalypse leave no room for doubt: "And the sea gave up the dead that were in it, and death and hell gave up the dead that were in them; and they were judged each one, according to their works. And hell and death were cast into the pool of fire. This is the second death, the pool of fire. And if anyone was not found written in the book of life, he was cast into the pool of fire" ( Apocalypse 20:9,10,14,15 ).

Hell exists, and the many go there. Let us choose once again to die with Christ by renewing our Baptismal vows: "For the death He died, He died to sin once for all, but the life that He lives, He lives unto God. Thus do you consider yourselves also as dead to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus our Lord" ( Romans 6:10-11 ).

In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Ghost. Amen.

For what we believe by Thy revelation of Thy glory, the same do we believe of Thy Son, the same of the Holy Ghost, without difference or separation. So that in confessing the true and everlasting Godhead, distinction in persons, unity in essence, and equality in majesty may be adored. Which the Angels and Archangels, the Cherubim also and Seraphim do praise: who cease not daily to cry out with one voice saying: HOLY, HOLY, HOLY...

Who livest and reignest, with God the Father, in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God. For ever and ever. Amen.

Postcommunion For The Intercession Of The Saints

May the gift of this Divine Sacrament which we have offered, cleanse us and defend us, we beseech Thee, O Lord; and through the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, mother of God, of St. Joseph, of Thy holy apostles Peter and Paul, and of all the saints, free us from all iniquity and deliver us from all adversity. Through the Lord Jesus Christ, Thy Son, Who liveth and reigneth with Thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, one God. Forever and ever. Amen.

Postcommunion For God's Holy Church

O Lord our God, we pray Thee that Thou suffer not to succumb to human hazards those whom Thou hast been pleased to make sharers of divine mysteries. Through the Lord Jesus Christ, Thy Son, Who liveth and reigneth with Thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, one God. Forever and ever. Amen.

PRAYER FOR HOLY PRIESTS

O my Jesus, I thank Thee, that Thou art truly, actually, and substantially, human and divine,
present here in the mystery of the Sacrament of the Altar.

Thou hast said, "Ask and you shall receive, seek and you shall find, knock and it shall be opened to you."
See, Lord, I come and knock. I ask Thee:
Send us holy priests!

O my Jesus, Thou hast said: "Whatever you ask the Father in MY Name, it shall be granted you."
See, Lord, in Thy Name I ask Thy Father the grace:
Send us holy priests!

O my Jesus, Thou hast said: "Heaven and earth shall pass away but My Word shall not pass away."
See, Lord, in trust of the infallibility of Thy Word, I ask Thee:
Send us holy priests!

Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, I trust in Thee!
Please bless Thy priests!

Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, it is not possible for Thee to have no sympathy for us wretches.
Have mercy on us sinners, and grant us through the threefold full of grace, beautiful, and
Immaculate Heart of Mary, Thy Mother and ours, the grace to which we pray to Thee. Amen.

O Mary, Queen of the clergy, pray for us:
obtain for us many holy priests.

O Lord, grant unto Thy Church saintly priests and fervent religious.

Send forth, O Lord, laborers into Thy harvest.

O Lord, grant us priests!
O Lord, grant us holy priests!
O Lord, grant us many holy priests!
O Lord, grant us many holy religious vocations!

Pope Saint Pius X, pray for us.

Prayer for the Universal Church

Pray for those who have been wandering and wondering in the conciliar desert for lo over 40 years. Pray for the conversion of the Novus Ordo hierarchy from the highest to the lowest echelons of the clergy, who, in the same manner as the Arian bishops, have apostasized from the True Church which Jesus Christ established on the Rock of Peter. Pray that they will wake from their devastating slumber, cast off their lukewarmness, and demand the unadulterated dogmatic Faith with no novelties, no ecumenism, no modernism, no anything but truly Catholic, embodied by true shepherds who will mandate the only possible Catholic worship - the true and continual sacrifice: the Traditional Latin Mass, set in stone for all time by Pope St. Pius V.

O God, our refuge and our strength, smite those failing to lead Thy Holy Church,
by and through the intercession of Saint Michael the Archangel; the immaculate Virgin Mother Mary; Beloved Saint Joseph; Thy blessed apostles Peter and Paul; and all the saints.
Hear our fervent prayers for more holy priests consecrated according to Thy will;
Provide Your Church leadership with the courage to convert all heretics, pagans, false idolaters and false god worshipers, and especially non-Catholics who refuse to accept the One True Church founded by Your Son and our Redeemer, Christ Jesus;
We pray for a sacred reformation of our Holy Mother Church - according to Your servant, Pope Pius XII in his Apostolic Constitution Sacramentum Ordinis.
We pray for these intercessions through the mercy and grace of Your Son, our Lord and Savior, Christ Jesus.
Amen.

CALENDAR of the SAINTS

16 July 2006 A.D.

Our Lady of Mount Carmel
The Church celebrates on this day the feast of the Scapular of Mount Carmel. The scapular, which derives its name from the Latin word scapulæ, meaning shoulders, is a dress which covers the shoulders. It is mentioned in the rule of Saint Benedict as worn by monks over their other dress when they were at work, and it now forms a regular part of the religious dress in the old Orders. But it is best known among Catholics as the name of two little pieces of cloth worn out of devotion to the Blessed Virgin over the shoulders, under the ordinary garb, and connected by strings. The devotion of the scapular, now almost universal in the Catholic Church, began with the Carmelites. The history of its origin is as follows: During the thirteenth century the Carmelite Order suffered great persecution, and on 16 July 1251, while Saint Simon Stock, then general of the Order, was at prayer, the Blessed Virgin appeared to him, holding in her hand a scapular. Giving it to the saint, she said,

"Receive, my dear son, this scapular of thy Order, as the distinctive sign of my confraternity, and the mark of the privilege which I have obtained for thee and the children of Carmel. It is a sign of salvation, a safeguard in danger, and a special pledge of peace and protection till the end of time. Whosoever dies wearing this shall be preserved from eternal flames."

It is much to be wished that people should everywhere join this confraternity, for the honor of Mary and for the salvation of souls, by a life fitted to that end.
In order to have a share in the merits of the sodality every member must:
Shun sin, and, according to his state of life, live chastely.
Say every day, if possible, seven times, Our Father, Hail Mary, and Glory be to the Father.
Strive to serve God by venerating Mary, and imitating her virtues.
These rules, it is true, are not binding under penalty of sin, but the breach of them deprives us of all merit; and is not this something to be taken into account? "He who sowetb sparingly shall also reap sparingly." ( 2 Corinthians 9:6 ).

Prayer for Heretics and Schismatics
Amen.

Let us pray for heretics and schismatics, that our Lord and God may deliver them from all their errors, and vouchsafe to recall them to their holy Mother, the Catholic and Apostolic Church. Almighty, eternal God, Who dost save all, and willest not that any should perish, look upon the souls deceived by diabolical fraud, that, abandoning all heretical depravity, the hearts of the erring may regain sanity and return to the unity of truth. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, Who livest and reignest, with God the Father, in the unity of the Holy Ghost, one God, world without end. Amen.

>>Are there Mass impropers?

Ha. Actually quite a few.

You probably know this but, "The Introit, along with the Collects, Epistle, Gradual, Gospel, Offertory, Secrets, Communion Verse, and Postcommunions change from Mass to Mass depending on the Sunday or the Feast Day being celebrated. These parts of the Mass that change are called the "Proper Prayers" or simply the "Propers."

One of my favorites, GSlob. His, pardon the expression, Devil's Dictionary is on my reference shelf. I only wish he didn't wander off into the Mexican desert so we could have had more of his humor and insights...
Thanks for the exchange and :))

Ditto for my reference book. He used proper/improper dichotomy to day/night - day proper and day improper, but the same construct could be used wider.

For those unfamiliar with Ambrose Bierce, here is the Wikipedia version of his life. While the bio is much too short, there are links to some of his works and diatribes.

Ambrose Bierce wikipedia link

It would be much better to procure some of his writings and enjoy his biting humor and rich sarcasm (//no sarcasm here) which have extended past his time and life-time. Truly a genius and worthwhile during our own times which feature too much realism and not enough insight...

Hello Robert! This is a good interview, if you would like to ping it out.

Devotion to Our Lady of Mount Carmel - Listen here

Brother Alexis Bugnolo of The Militia of The Immaculate and Editor of the Franciscan Archive

On this propitious day, the Commemoration of The Blessed Virgin of Mount Carmel and the 778th anniversary of the Canonization of St. Francis of Assisi, Brother Alexis speaks on true devotion to Our Lady of Mt Carmel, highlighting the Promise made by Our Lady to those who wear Her (Brown) Scapular and The Sabbatine Privilege. Devotion to Our Lady of Mt Carmel can be found in the Old Testament, going back to the prophet Elias whose hermitic community had great anticipatory devotion to the Mother of the Messiah Who was to come.
