The thing I'm having the really impossible time trying to picture is how FDR or Ike might have tried to fight WW-II while buying oil from Adolf Hitler for 75 dollars a barrel.

We need to ban the importation of oil. It would mess us up about as badly as we were messed up during WW-II for about a year, after which we'd be vastly better off, and it would utterly ruin all of the world's worst ****heads permanently.

Stop importing from Mexico, Canada, Vietnam, Brazil, and some old Soviet Union Republics?

How about just banning Middle Eastern Oil?

We get over 75% of our oil elsewhere anyway. It would still be hard but MUCH less so.

I completely agree. Such a move would shoot retail prices into the stratosphere, kicking off a monstrous inflation in the U.S. -- but it would also go a long way toward finally killing the oil-based, road-centered culture in this country.

With gasoline and oil rationed for military and emergency use only, everything deilvered or produced using cheap imported oil would suddenly become horribly expensive -- and Americans would finally feel the sting of war. We would at last be forced to sacrifice for victory. The end of the cheap-gas illusion would require us to switch from chemically-fertilized, agribusiness-produced, truck-shipped cheap food to the pricier fare from our local farms and dairies for our daily bread. The result: better-tasting, healthier food, produced by familiy farmers instead of godless industrial conglomerates. (Victory gardens would also make a big comeback.) Commuting by car would cease, forcing Americans to travel by bus, train, and bicycle, improving the health, nerves, and breathing of urban Americans. Instead of wasting time downloading porn and smoking pot, neighbors would find themselves obliged to band together to share food and clothes, hoe each other's vegetable patches, fix the local doctor's bicycle, swap chores, and generally help each other out. Best of all, America could finally begin building a new generation of safe nuclear power plants on a 24/7 basis, allowing us to finally gain energy independence and tell the rest of the world to kiss our red-white-and-blue striped asses.

But we won't do any of that. Americans go nuts if gas goes up a quarter a gallon; if it went up to ten dollars a gallon -- or became unavailable a any price to those without a Federal Emergency Petroleum Authority "T" Sticker -- there will be riots in the streets demanding cheap gas. We prefer the illusory "freedom" of personal automobile transport to the real fredom that comes from living in a self-sufficient nation.

Pathetic.

You are so right! We and the rest of those who are trying to appease the "oil producing countries" are in reality funding the war against us. For all practical purposes it is a war against the non Muslims of this world.

If after the 70's and the Carter administration we, the conservatives didn't start fighting the tree huggers, the snail darter lovers and the rest of the fanatical environmentalists, it is past time.

We have oil off both coasts, can't drill, but Cuba with China's money is planning on doing it about 50 miles off the coast of Key West, the clean coal was named ,by Clinton's executive order, a National Monument, Ted Kennedy and Walter stopped the wind mills off their coast, can't drill in Alaska it might hurt the bears, the moose etc, etc, etc,.

The same liberals that have stopped and new production of energy are the same that are blaming Buss for the high cost of energy.

Almost forgot to mention the Hydro Power that was stopped by Carter because some rivers would be dammed up, no new refineries, no more nuclear plants.

It really goes on and on and on.

At $70 a bbl. think of money leaving this country and funding the terrorists, IMHO.

Do not worry!...all we have to do is walk over the Saudis and tell them; ...as of now, WE, control the oil supply.
Dare to say otherwise, on your own peril, from here on it is "no holds barred".

Venezuela's fruit cake will be released of his duty, and an interim US backed team will control the oil supply from Venezuela as intended.

They had this little thing called "gas rationing". They had all kinds of rationing programs. Every American pulled his weight and every American sacrificed for the cause.

Does anyone have the political will to call upon today's Americans to make sacrifices for their country? I don't think so. If this is WWIII, then we just may lose this war. At least 30% of America is clearly on the other side of this war. And 90% of the World is on the other side. Can we win against those numbers? Are we as a nation prepared to make the sacrifices needed to prevail? I don't think so. We're still strip searching 90 year old grandmothers with walkers at airports because we don't have the political will to do racial or ethnic profiling.

IMHO AT the outset Bush said the American public needed to be prepared for sacrafices in the WOT. It is time for those sacrafices...
