Red Buttons, the carrot-topped burlesque comedian who became a top star in early television then went dramatic to win the 1957 Oscar as supporting actor in "Sayonara," died Thursday, a spokesman said. He was 87.

Buttons died of vascular disease at his home in the Century City area of Los Angeles, publicist Warren Cowan said. He had been ill for some time, and was with family members when he died, Cowan said.

He was one of the first comedians I watched on TV back when our family got its first TV set in about 1952.

Will always picture him hanging from the bell tower getting shot in the foot (Longest Day), and the "Ding, Dong" scene where he's deaf.

Good night, Red.

Sorry for making fun of you as you hung from the side of the building The Longest Day.

Seems his last acting appearance was as the character "Jules 'Ruby' Rubadoux" on ER episodes in 95, 96, and 2005. See imdb.com

When the people you have grown up with, and watching the enjoyment they put into your living rooms, pass away,it is a reminder of our own immortality.R.I.P.Red.

I think the Lord loves humor (and comedians). That's why He invented both. Imagine the world without an occasional laugh every now and then.

Red Buttons has moved his show to a much larger stage.
