Reports coming in about IAF striking Beruit airport, if this is confirmed this is another sizable escalation. I think this article ought to be pinned.

July 12, 2006, 11:12 PM (GMT+02:00)
An Israeli armored ground force crossed the Kissufim route, reached the Gaza coast Wednesday and severed northern Gaza from the south.
Qatar became the first Arab country to call on the Palestinians to release the kidnapped Israeli soldier and end their Qassam missile offensive - in its amended UN Security Council draft resolution.
Israels Gaza incursions will continue until the IDFs missions are accomplished
This was decided at prime minister Ehud Olmerts first conference with the IDF general staff Tuesday, July 11. The incursions will take the form of limited raids and will not be held to any deadline. The forays will continue until Gideon Shalit is returned and the Palestinian missile offensive ended.
IAF pilots were doing a lot of live training at the Arizona Bombing Ranges this spring....

US infrared satellite imagery arrives at IDF headquarters.
Honestly, I don't know. I would assume -- underlining assume -- that there's one within a couple days' sailing in case it's needed for medevac or logistical support for the ongoing effort in Iraq. We certainly have enough long-range bombers within range to keep the bad guys' heads down until the cavalry arrives (and yes, I know referring to a carrier group as "the cavalry" is abusing the analogy, but you know what I mean).
The USAF could drop a lot of ordnance anywhere in the region in a matter of minutes from Qatar and Dubai, and could get a lot of tonnage to Baghdad International in a matter of hours. I can't think of a better regional hub.
More so than the Army and Marines, the flyboys are well-rested and have had time to plan for contingencies and train for any likely scenario. Air supremacy in the region is not seriously challenged, even considering the USAF alone; team up the USAF and IAF, and if a gnat farts, an AWACS will hear it, target it, and vaporize the bug before the stink fades.
The Air Force and Naval Air Wings have a combination of combat experience and relatively (that is, relative to the ground forces) fresh horses. If anyone decides to create a definable battle line or an identifiable headquarters, he will find unholy hell raining down on his head. Without a damned thing he can do about it.
If true, it would be rather telling, wouldn't it?
I won't tell, will you?
China is the dragon that wants to burn our ass.I don't trust the chicoms anymore than I would trust clinton in a room full of female interns.
The sad fact is that when or if we go to war with China it will be over in days
If that scenerio were to take place, I would pray that me and mine were at ground zero.
So this is why the DOW was down triple digits. They were factoring in the war. How did they know and when did they know it?

rofl, good one. Needed some comic relief at a very 'series' time. Thanks!
The techs are getting hammer for one. And the international markets have gone to sh*t.

As I said to Texasforever, I don't know where the nearest carrier group to the Persian Gulf is. But even for the low, slow, old and ugly, but reliable and much-beloved A-10 Warthog, picking off tanks from the air is like shooting fish in a barrel. A "column of tanks" is an arrangement that saves the defender a lot of effort.
We wouldn't have to wait for them to cross the border to raise the alarm; with modern thermal imaging on manned aircraft, satellites and drones, any column of tanks would light up like a particularly gaudy Christmas tree as soon as they started idling their engines.
The oft-cited wisdom is that generals are always studying how to fight the last war -- in the Muslim Middle East, it's more like the war before the war before last. In 1991, Saddam's Republican Guard dug in for WWI-style trench warfare along the Saudi border. It did not end well for them.
If the Iranians have high hopes for a Panzer strike with their Eisenhower-era tanks, they will find an even more ignominious end. If the Raptor is operational -- I don't think it is yet, but it could be pressed early if needed -- forget about it. The first sign that the Americans are coming will be the last sound you hear on this Earth.

The A-10 is my favorite.
Good night.
