Reports coming in about IAF striking Beruit airport, if this is confirmed this is another sizable escalation. I think this article ought to be pinned.

It's worth remembering that satellite coverage from foreign sources that is available for viewing by U.S. viewers comes from the U.S. version of those channels. You can't get the foreign version because... obviously... there's this whole planet between you and their satellite. So, depending on the country and service you may get what the locals are seeing, but you're more likely to be getting a version prepared for U.S. consumption, or prepared by a foreign language network based in the U.S..

So... as you hinted... figuring out just what you might get takes considerable care.

One or two nukes would offset the attrition.

Dan, I wish you a long, healthy, happy life. When I was 18, I wasn't paying attention as you are now. Keep your eyes and ears open, but please do enjoy the time of life you are in right now. It never comes again. =)

..please notice the deafening silence from Saudi Arabia...

The Magic Kingdom is investing big bucks to protect their infrastructure. The last thing they want is a Mid-East war that would hurt profits.

Saudis Increase Security Budget

02/07/2006 By Mohammed Alkhereiji

London, Asharq Al-Awsat- Saudi Arabia's security budget is projected to reach USD 12 billion for the year 2006, according to an independent report by the Saudi National Security Assessment Project (SNSAP).

The USD 2 Billion dollar increase for 2005's budget will be allocated to securing the kingdom's vast petroleum complexes, which have been targeted by al Qaeda in the past.

According to Nawaf Obaid managing director of the SNSAP, "An attack on Saudi Arabia's oil installations would be a catastrophe, not just on a domestic level but rather a global scale, therefore the increase in the over-all security budget highlights the Saudi leadership's commitment to both eliminating the Al-Qaeda threat and ensuring stability regionally and globally."

Last February, Saudi security forces foiled an attempted plot to destroy an oil-processing plant at Abqaiq near the eastern city of Dammam. The plant which handles about two-thirds of Saudi Arabia's oil production, was unaffected by the attack, although experts believe that a successful attempt could have cut Saudi oil exports by fifty percent for the entire year.

In a recorded statement released in early 2004, al Qaeda leader Osama Bin laden urged his followers to attack US interests in the region declaring that, "Targeting America in Iraq economically and through loss of life is a golden and unique opportunity. one of the most important reasons that our enemies control our land is the pilfering of our oil - Prevent them from getting the oil and conduct your operations accordingly, particularly in Iraq and the Gulf."

Last month the Saudi interior ministry announced that between May 9 through May 23 of this year Saudi security forces arrested 27 suspected Al-Qaeda terrorists in raids throughout the Kingdom.

The suspected militants included two Somalis and one Ethiopian who were involved in suspicious activities in Riyadh, Mecca, the Eastern Province and the northern region.

In addition, security forces arrested one Iraqi and three Saudis following a raid on their hideout in Hafr Al-Baten. All three were wanted by security forces. Authorities also seized weapons and documents at the militants’ hideout. Nine suspected militants Saudi were arrested as well.

Very good points. Perhaps Jordon will be the key, since Iraq has no contact with Israeli border. If Jordon and the Saudis enter the War, we are in the thick of it and our ground forces within Iraq would be surrounded. Only exit path, Persian Gulf with enemies on both sides.

Bush needs to drop the G8 visit and address this issue fully. Over 100,000 American service personal could eventually be surrounded as early as tomorrow.

to create a lot of hot spots to get us to take our eye off the ball.

I believe Bush has what it takes to keep his eye on ball no matter the feint they may try to pull off. I trust him and have faith in his decisions. They must have discussed the many possibilities that could be thrown at them at the same time.
