Building explosion at 32 East 62nd Street. Four story building collapses and is burning. Several people reported trapped in the rubble.
I know someone who works right next door to that building. I just called her to see if she was ok. She said that the building exploded and was not just a collapse.
They think it may have been a gas leak because they had been doing construction on the townhouse.
I would expect a gas explosion, but this is a high-rent district.
It was just reported on Fox TVNews that some guy at the Pentagon with a terrorist group says there is no evidence of terrorist activity in this collapse.
thanks for the update(s)!
according to the map I'm looking at, Rockefeller Center is about 0.3 miles from Central Park.
anyway, keep us posted!
Well, that's nice and let's hope so :) But do they actually know what caused the explosion? Cuz if they don't, that doesn't mean much.
White House just said explosion not related to terrorism. Short caption on Fox, just before commercial break :-)
Some guy at the Pentagon is with a terrorist group? I guess he would know then. :)
The man taken away on stretcher was a firefighter per local NBC news..he was waving at people...he's got a neck brace.
LOL. I was looking at that and thinking "what's wrong with him"
Just before the ad for the next installment of Greta's, "Blonde Co-eds and White Broncos"...
Any tunnels located under this building?
The two injured taken to NY Pres Hospital were pedestrians who were injured by the initial blast.
Construction! I was waiting for that bit of news. My money is on a snake outfit.
Jethro Bodine! LOL!

Building Explodes and Collapses in NYC
NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- A three-story building on Manhattan's East Side went up in flames and collapsed Monday after what witnesses said was a thunderous explosion that rocked the neighborhood.
The cause was not immediately known, and at least two people were under evaluation at a hospital.
Television reports said people were trapped inside, but fire officials did not immediately confirm that.
Heavy black smoke rose high above the building, wedged between taller structures on 62nd Street between Park and Madison Avenues just a few blocks from Central Park. Damage, including shattered windows, could be seen at one of the adjoining buildings.
The building reportedly housed a doctor's office and a beauty salon.
Yaakov Kermaier, 36, a resident in a building next door, said he was outside when he heard ``a deafening boom. I saw the whole building explode in front of me.''
``Everybody started running, nobody knew what was coming next,'' he said. His nanny and newborn escaped from their next-door apartment unharmed.
TV host Larry King, who had been in his hotel room nearby, described the explosion to CNN as sounding like a bomb and feeling like an earthquake.
``I've never heard a sound like that,'' King said.
Thad Milonas, 57, was operating a coffee cart across from the building when he said the ground shook and the building came down.
``In a few seconds, finished,'' Milonas said. ``The whole building collapsed.''
He said he saw at least four injured people, including two bleeding women he helped from the scene.
Streets around the area were closed off to traffic as ambulances and rescue units responded just before 9 a.m. Dozens of onlookers stood behind police tape watching the smoke as it engulfed the sky.
(Personally I don't know how they can rule this out so quickly, but that's what they say)
Whoops! Ignore my link on the old thread. I see you're already here.
There is a subway tunnel that connects Manhattan and Queens to Roosevelt Island and runs under 63rd Street. I'm not sure if it runs as far west as Madison Avenue. Does anyone know?
