Report: Police say Spain remains recruitment center for Islamic fundamentalists

MADRID, Spain

Police have warned that Spain remains a center for recruitment of radical Islamic fundamentalists, a newspaper reported Sunday.

El Pais said a police report released in May about the Islamic threat in Spain said there had been an increase of recruitment activities in mosques throughout Spain aimed at the radicalization of young Muslim immigrants. Some of these mosques are clandestine, organized in parking lots or business premises, El Pais reported....(snip)

Special Terrorism Summary 07/16/06
Israel v. Hezbollah

Overnight Events

Hezbollah rockets struck Haifa multiple times in the largest strike on the town. As many as 8 are dead. Initial reports indicate that the particular rockets used were of Syrian manufacture. Some reports suggest that the intended target were petrochemical facilities.
A larger barrage of short range rockets were launched across most of northern Israel. The concern continues to grow whether or not Hizbollah will follow through with their threat to stike deeper into Israel. One comment made by Hizbollah suggested that they would avoid targeting Israeli nuclear plants.

IAF continues to shape the battlefield in preparation for what must soon to be the ground offensive portion of the war. Some unconfirmed reports that the Hizbollah leader was injured in one of the airstrikes.

Syria appears to have developed a stronger stance against Israel after yesterday doing everything but bending over backwards to avoid the appearance of trying to provoke Israel. Apparently Syria sees the conflict definitiely spreading its way and is getting on war footing. Both Syria and Iran have cranked up their rhetoric.

International efforts to get non-Lebanoniese nationals is on going. The US too will soon join in the efforts. Currently Israel and Hizbollah are not interfering with this effort. It will be dangerous for the US though since it would provide an opportunity for Hizbollah to try to snatch Americans to barter with to leverage the US to put the brakes on Israel.

With all the focus on the north, military operations continue in the south in Gaza. Reports are very sketchy and incomplete.

How to Avoid Honor Killing in Turkey? Honor Suicide
AOL News ^ | July 16, 2006 | DAN BILEFSKY

Posted on 07/16/2006 2:27:04 PM PDT by Clintonfatigued

Every few weeks in Batman and the surrounding area in southeast Anatolia, which is poor, rural and deeply influenced by conservative Islam, a young woman tries to take her life. Others have been stoned to death, strangled, shot or buried alive. Their offenses ranged from stealing a glance at a boy to wearing a short skirt, wanting to go to the movies, being raped by a stranger or relative or having consensual sex.

Hoping to join the European Union, Turkey has tightened the punishment for attacks on women and girls who have had such experiences. But the violence has continued, if by different means: parents are trying to spare their sons from the harsh punishments associated with killing their sisters by pressing the daughters to take their own lives instead.

Extremists Kill Afghan Civilians in Drive-by Shooting

American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON, July 16, 2006 – Two Afghan civilians were killed and one was injured July 15 in a drive-by shooting in Zambar in Khowst Province.
"This was a senseless attack on Afghan civilians," said Col. Thomas Collins, spokesman for Combined Forces Command Afghanistan. "For extremists to dress like women and kill innocent civilians shows the lengths the extremists will go to to threaten the safety of the Afghan people. The coalition remains committed to putting an end to such senseless violence and those who would commit these atrocities."

Three people disguised as women who were wearing burkas and driving in a Toyota Corolla conducted the attack, officials reported. The Afghan civilians killed were from the village of Aber Khel and acquaintances of the Zambar Afghan National Police chief.

In other news, Afghan National Army and coalition forces attacked more than 40 extremists in three districts during separate operations July 13 and 14 in Uruzgan Province in an effort to disrupt and deny enemy operations in those areas. The affected districts were Chora, Kala Kala, and Khorma. In Deh Rawod, two extremist suicide bombers wearing burkas and disguised as women were killed during a cordon and search of a compound.

Elsewhere, near the district of Khas Uruzgan, ANA and coalition forces repelled an attacked by 20 enemy fighters with small-arms fire, killing one extremist. The joint patrols took precautions to avoid harm to Afghan civilians during each operation, and there were no reports of Afghan civilian injuries.

In Helmand Province in the village of Mosulmani near Musa Qaleh, ANA and coalition forces attacked several enemy fighters operating in the village.

"We will continue to disrupt and hunt down extremists operating in southern Afghanistan," said Lt. Col. Paul Fitzpatrick, spokesman for Combined Joint Task Force 76. "Extremists offer nothing to the people of Afghanistan. Only the legitimate government can create jobs, build schools and establish infrastructure."

Officials: Coalition Didn't Kill Afghan Non-combatants

American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON, July 16, 2006 – Assessments from Helmand Province, Afghanistan, do not conclude that non-combatants were killed as a result of operations against extremists on July 12, according to coalition officials.
Extremists likely fabricated reports of civilian deaths as a propaganda ploy to discredit coalition forces and the government of Afghanistan, officials said today.

"We take great care to prevent and minimize any damage to property or injury to law-abiding citizens," said Col. Tom Collins, a coalition spokesman for Combined Forces Command Afghanistan. "We will continue in our operations to defeat those who attempt to impose their will upon the local population through intimidation and fear.

"We also call on the citizens of Helmand to cooperate with the coalition to defeat extremists who offer nothing for the betterment of the people," Collins continued. "Until such time as a sufficiently safe and secure environment is established in Helmand province, development prospects will remain limited and the population's quality of life will remain low."

On July 12, 20 extremists engaged a coalition patrol with rocket-propelled grenades and machine-gun fire in and around the village of Sharageh in Helmand province, needlessly putting innocent civilians in danger, officials said. Close-air support was available but not employed due to the possibility of endangering innocent Afghan civilians.

It is a common extremist tactic to fight without regard for civilian lives, and to mix in with and operate around civilians. Extremists do this knowing coalition forces will use extraordinary restraint to prevent injury to innocent civilians, officials said.

For example, on July 13 in Uruzgan province near the district of Khas Uruzgan, ANA and coalition forces repelled an attack by 20 enemy fighters with small-arms fire, killing one extremist. The joint patrols took precautions to avoid harm to Afghan civilians during the operation, and there were no reports of Afghan civilian injuries.

Coalition forces have had a presence in the Nowzad district since mid-May, working alongside the Afghan National Police to protect the district's center in assisting the provincial government in providing security. The coalition forces have come under repeated attack from extremists.

During engagements in the last 16 days, the coalition has reported 22 attacks, including 13 incidents of small-arms fire, 13 incidents of heavy machine-gun fire, 48 incidents in which rocket-propelled grenades were used, 40 in which mortar rounds were used and five sniper attacks.

In response to the ferocity of these attacks, air support was called in on six occasions, officials said. Ordnance was dropped against identified locations from which extremists were firing at coalition forces and no munitions missed their targets.

In one strike, the coalition did hit a building used as a former school that had been closed by the Taliban. This building was empty for some time and extremists were using it as a position to launch mortar attacks, officials said.

Other areas targeted in the July 12 operation also were clear of civilians after days of fighting between coalition forces and extremists. One ANP member was wounded during the operations.

The coalition expects extremists to continue to level accusations of civilian deaths against the coalition as a propaganda ploy, officials said. Although the coalition takes every allegation seriously, extremist spokespeople fabricate claims on a near-daily basis, they said.

Officials urged media representatives to be skeptical about such reports and to validate claims with the coalition or Afghan government officials before reporting on them.

Coalition forces take extreme precautions to limit the chance of civilian casualties. But officials said that as long as the enemy chooses to fight in or near civilians, the possibility of civilians being endangered will exist.

U.S. Troops Kill Terrorists in Iraq, IEDs Claim Two Soldiers

American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON, July 16, 2006 – U.S. and Iraqi soldiers killed several terrorists and found an enemy weapons cache during separate operations in Baghdad yesterday, Multinational Force Iraq officials reported.
In other news, two U.S. soldiers died yesterday as a result of improvised explosive device attacks. One soldier, with the 49th Military Police Brigade, was killed near Sadr City in northeast Baghdad. The other soldier, assigned to Multinational Division, died in southern Baghdad. Both soldiers' names are being withheld until their families are notified.

During operations yesterday, Iraqi army and Multinational Division Baghdad soldiers killed four terrorists, wounded two, and detained five people during a sweep in Adhamiyah, a district in northern Baghdad.

Soldiers from the 2nd Battalion, 6th Iraqi Army Division, and U.S. advisors from 4th Battalion, 320th Field Artillery Military Transition Team, were fired upon when they were conducting a search for an enemy weapons cache, officials said.

Terrorists in the area engaged Iraqi security and coalition forces with rocket-propelled grenades and small-arms fire. In the ensuing firefight, four terrorists were killed and two were wounded. Five other people were detained.

Two Iraqi army soldiers were wounded in the engagement.

The two wounded terrorists were taken to a medical facility for treatment along with the wounded Iraqi army soldiers.

The weapons cache was found to be empty, officials reported.

The same day, soldiers from Multinational Division Baghdad's 2nd Battalion, 506th Infantry Regiment, working with the 4th Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, detained three suspected terrorists and found a weapons cache in the Doura district of Baghdad.

The soldiers had found a pistol during a vehicle search. They continued searching and found a secret compartment containing four rocket-propelled grenade rounds, four RPG boosters, a PKC rifle, a fragmentation grenade, 400 rounds of PKC ammunition, an AK-47 rifle with two full magazines of ammunition, a 9mm pistol and 200 7.62mm armor-piercing rounds.

The suspects all produced fake identification and were detained, officials said.

U.S. Soldiers Free VOA reporter, Seize Terrorists

American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON, July 16, 2006 – U.S. soldiers freed a kidnapped Voice of America journalist and captured four suspected terrorists in two separate operations in Baghdad July 14, officials in Iraq reported.
Multinational Division Baghdad soldiers rescued a kidnapped Voice of America reporter in southeast Baghdad. Soldiers from 2nd Battalion, 506th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade, 101st Airborne Division, had observed four men dumping a bound-and-gagged body from their vehicle.

The soldiers engaged the suspects with small-arms fire, but the men escaped into a nearby palm grove. The U.S. soldiers had first believed that the suspects in the car were dumping a corpse.

However, the soldiers found the missing reporter and transported him back to a coalition forces forward operating base.

In another action, Multinational Division Baghdad soldiers detained four suspects and seized weapons during a combat patrol in northern Baghdad July 14.

Soldiers from 7th Squadron, 10th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, had stopped a suspicious-looking minivan and found a PKC machine gun, a rocket-propelled grenade and a belt of ammunition.

The U.S. soldiers detained the vehicle's four occupants for questioning. During interrogation, one of the suspects provided information that led to a house search that yielded anti-coalition forces propaganda and plans for future attacks.

In other news, Iraqi leaders, soldiers and engineers teamed up to repair some broken water pipe during a project conducted west of Mahmudiyah July 13 and 14.

The Iraqi engineers and soldiers from 2nd Battalion, 4th Brigade, 6th Iraqi Army Division, worked together for two days to make the repairs. A group of Iraqis led by Sheik Kareem Al Kafawni had gathered outside the Mahmudiyah city council building the previous day to request repairs needed to restore water service to their neighborhood.

Soldiers from 2nd Battalion, 4th Brigade, 6th Iraqi Army Division, facilitated a meeting between Mayor Muayed, the city council and neighborhood leaders. The mayor organized local engineers, arranged for the purchase of repair materials and requested that Iraqis perform the job.

After consulting with local officials and residents, Muayed dispatched a repair crew consisting of soldiers and civilian engineers to the worksite. The Iraqi crew completed the repairs early July 14.

U.S.-Iraqi Patrol Gets Terrorists; Would-be Bomber Blows Up

American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON, July 16, 2006 – U.S. and Iraqi soldiers killed two terrorists and captured seven others during a joint operation conducted in a rural area northwest of Baghdad late last week, officials in Iraq reported.
The Iraqi soldiers and Multinational Corps Iraq soldiers from 7th Squadron, 10th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, participated in the July 13 firefight. Four local citizens gave information that led to the terrorists' capture. The Iraqis told the soldiers about some men carrying an RPK machine gun and a mortar tube in the neighborhood and provided possible locations.

The soldiers observed and tracked the terrorists to nearby houses after using flares to illuminate the area. The terrorists engaged the soldiers with small-arms fire. The U.S. and Iraqi soldiers returned fire, then conducted a house-to-house search for the terrorists.

Two dead terrorists were discovered near a ringing cell phone, officials said. An interpreter answered the phone and extracted the location of other suspects from an unidentified woman caller. Iraqi and U.S. soldiers later found a wounded terrorist. They provided first aid to the wounded man and requested a medical evacuation.

Three other suspects, found hiding in a ditch, were taken into custody by the Iraqi army and allegedly informed the soldiers that they had been paid to fight Americans, officials said. Each of the suspects was carrying an AK-47 rifle and several magazines of ammunition when they were detained.

Seven AK-47s, four RPKs, four fragmentation grenades and approximately 60 7.62 magazines loaded with ammunition were seized in the encounter.

A total of seven suspects were taken into custody.

In other news, a suspected terrorist was killed when a taxicab exploded after being fired on by an Iraqi army patrol in eastern Baghdad July 13.

The taxi had pulled out in front of an Iraqi army patrol and stopped. The soldiers fired warning shots and the vehicle exploded. The suspected terrorist who died in the explosion was a passenger in the taxi. The driver survived with minor burns.

The driver was treated for his injuries and was detained for further questioning. No other injuries or damage was reported.

U.S. Military Team In Lebanon To Evaluate, Plan Evacuations

By Gerry J. Gilmore
American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON, July 16, 2006 – A U.S. military team is now in Lebanon evaluating the possibility of evacuating thousands of American citizens there, a Defense Department spokesman said here today.
"There was an operation this morning involving some U.S. servicemembers to evacuate a small number of people from Lebanon at the request of the U.S. Embassy there," Army Lt. Col. Mark Ballesteros, a Pentagon spokesman, said.

A survey and assessment team from U.S. Central Command is now in Lebanon, Ballesteros said. The team is "planning with the (U.S.) Department of State there for the way ahead," he said.

News reports say about 20 Americans - some with illnesses - had been evacuated from Lebanon today. An estimated 25,000 Americans live or work in Lebanon.

The State Department has posted a message on its Web site directed to Americans living in Lebanon. It reads: "A message to American citizens in Lebanon: The U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Department of Defense continue working on a plan to help American citizens who wish to depart Lebanon to leave in a secure and orderly manner. To assist in the development of that operation, the U.S. government is sending an assessment team to Beirut to facilitate the safe departure of Americans who wish to leave."

The Embassy remains open to support U.S. citizens in Lebanon, the Web site said. It directs U.S. citizens in Lebanon to register by contacting the Embassy in Beirut directly, or through the State Department's Bureau of Consular Affairs registration site. The Web site listed two contact telephone numbers: 800-407-4747 inside the United States and 202-501-4444 from overseas.

Beirut residents were fleeing the Lebanese capital today as Israeli forces and Hezbollah terrorists continued to trade trans-border rocket fire. Hezbollah is a terror group that's pledged to destroy Israel and is said to receive funding from Syria and Iran.

The United Nations is trying to broker a cease-fire. The fighting was precipitated by Hezbollah's seizure of two Israeli soldiers on July 12.

The G8 leaders meeting in St. Petersburg, Russia, issued a statement today expressing "deepening concern" about the deteriorating situation in the Middle East and vowed to work together to restore peace.

"These extremist elements and those that support them cannot be allowed to plunge the Middle East into chaos and provoke a wider conflict," they said. "The extremists must immediately halt their attacks."

The leaders affirmed Israel's right to defend itself but urged it to exercise restraint to minimize civilian casualties.

Special Terrorism Summary 07/16/06 #2
Israel At War

War of words

Iran continues to say that Israel will suffer greatly if Syria is attacked. Syria has also gotten a little more agressive regarding its rhetoric. Syria has the most to lose should they try to slug it out with Israel. Iran’s response is only a ballastic missile capability with conventional and/or possibly chemical rounds. Nuclear capability is questionable. However, if Iran try something stupid as that, Israel has already moved Patrior units into positions to protect itself.

Nasrallah: ‘We Yearn for Ground Conflict’

Among other things the leader of Hezbollah claimed in a televised message again that they have many ‘suprises’ in store for Israel. He also said Hezbollah would not seek help, then asked where was the Arab League. The Arab League’s meetings concluded yesterday with not only a lack of support but a rebuke to Hezbollah.
A major concern should be - does Hezbollah have chemical munitions and are just waiting to deploy them against the Israeli ground offensive or against deeper targets?

Mubarak: Egypt persuaded Israel against Beirut land attack

The Egyptian leader disclosed an Iranian offer to negotiate settlement with Hizbullah as part of Arab initiatives to resolve crisis, but Mubarak calls Tehran's bid 'a trap' . This is a real stick in the eye to both Iran and Hezbollah and shows just how isolated they are in the eyes of most arabs.

Israeli Air Assault Continues

About 25 percent of Hizbullah's capabilities have been hit, a high-ranking IDF officer estimated on Sunday night at the end of the fifth day of Operation Just Reward. According to the officer, the group's chain of command is still functioning. He estimated that the Lebanese group would not be annihilated when the dust settles, only severely damaged. The officer predicted that the operation would end in the middle of next week.

Hezbollah continues rocket attacks.

Chief of General Staff Lt.-Gen. Dan Halutz said on Sunday afternoon that the more advanced Fajar missiles that were fired with a barrage of other rockets at Haifa on Sunday morning, killing eight people, were made in Syria.
Hizbullah terrorists have fired some 800 rockets at northern Israeli communities within the past five days.
The area around Nazareth was hit within the hour, the deepest strike by Hezbollah rockets yet. Additional rockets have struck Haifa following this mornings deadly strike.
