Special Terrorism Summary 07/16/06 #2
Israel At War

War of words

Iran continues to say that Israel will suffer greatly if Syria is attacked. Syria has also gotten a little more agressive regarding its rhetoric. Syria has the most to lose should they try to slug it out with Israel. Iran’s response is only a ballastic missile capability with conventional and/or possibly chemical rounds. Nuclear capability is questionable. However, if Iran try something stupid as that, Israel has already moved Patrior units into positions to protect itself.

Nasrallah: ‘We Yearn for Ground Conflict’

Among other things the leader of Hezbollah claimed in a televised message again that they have many ‘suprises’ in store for Israel. He also said Hezbollah would not seek help, then asked where was the Arab League. The Arab League’s meetings concluded yesterday with not only a lack of support but a rebuke to Hezbollah.
A major concern should be - does Hezbollah have chemical munitions and are just waiting to deploy them against the Israeli ground offensive or against deeper targets?

Mubarak: Egypt persuaded Israel against Beirut land attack

The Egyptian leader disclosed an Iranian offer to negotiate settlement with Hizbullah as part of Arab initiatives to resolve crisis, but Mubarak calls Tehran's bid 'a trap' . This is a real stick in the eye to both Iran and Hezbollah and shows just how isolated they are in the eyes of most arabs.

Israeli Air Assault Continues

About 25 percent of Hizbullah's capabilities have been hit, a high-ranking IDF officer estimated on Sunday night at the end of the fifth day of Operation Just Reward. According to the officer, the group's chain of command is still functioning. He estimated that the Lebanese group would not be annihilated when the dust settles, only severely damaged. The officer predicted that the operation would end in the middle of next week.

Hezbollah continues rocket attacks.

Chief of General Staff Lt.-Gen. Dan Halutz said on Sunday afternoon that the more advanced Fajar missiles that were fired with a barrage of other rockets at Haifa on Sunday morning, killing eight people, were made in Syria.
Hizbullah terrorists have fired some 800 rockets at northern Israeli communities within the past five days.
The area around Nazareth was hit within the hour, the deepest strike by Hezbollah rockets yet. Additional rockets have struck Haifa following this mornings deadly strike.
