WASHINGTON, June 29 /U.S. Newswire/ -- House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today in opposition to H.R. 4761, which opens up new areas of the Outer Continental Shelf for oil and gas drilling and allows drilling 50 miles from the coastline:

"This bill is bad for the environment of coastal states. By revoking the ban on drilling for oil and natural gas, it will subject many sensitive coastal areas to harm.

"In my home state of California, we have learned from bitter experience that a large oil spill can cause long-lasting damage to the marine ecosystem at all levels, including seabirds, marine mammals, and fisheries. We also learned that a large spill can cause enormous damage to our economy by damaging vibrant, tourism-based coastal communities and businesses.

"Like so many Republican bills, this bill is also fiscally irresponsible. It redirects federal royalty payments from the treasury to coastal states where drilling is occurring offshore on the Outer Continental Shelf.

"We do not know what the cost to the federal treasury will be in the long run, but we know it will be huge. Last week, the Bush Administration estimated that the bill would cost the treasury $69 billion dollars over 15 years. In the meantime, the bill's supporters have been scrambling to make it look less expensive by bringing down the costs in the near-term.

"A small number of states -- the ones where drilling is already occurring offshore -- will do quite well if this bill passes. But for most states,

The funny thing is that you get all this carping from the left at how expensive this or that is but if you do the research they are most likely the cause, ie energy, health care, insurance, etc.

"The Republican answer to our energy crisis is to drill in protected areas and provide tax breaks to Big Oil."

I wonder if it would be worth the time to tell this DIM bulb that corporations don't pay taxes....

Though Republican leadership has declared this to be 'Energy Week' in the House, we are merely considering one energy related bill, and it does nothing to provide relief at the pump today.

This is semi-true. I does NOTHING to provide relief at the pump TODAY. But it sure would help out later on...

It is just a ruse to cover up Republicans' failed record on energy...

...only because ANY relief offered by the GOP was thwarted at every turn by DIMS...

which has resulted in record prices for consumers...

...due to record demand for crude...

...record profits for Big Oil...

...who made 1/3 of what the Government took in...

...record dependence on foreign oil...

...a record we could decrease IF we could produce more DOMESTICALLY!

What is really frightening is that if Pelosi and the rest of the DIMs are the "best and brightest" of the populace, the ones that voted for them have to be significantly less intelligent...

Yeah and....

and California would rather extort fuel taxes from it's citizens than provide solutions and relief. These vile Lib Dems are the ones who politicize this issue only.

My suggestion is that if those on the coasts do not want to drill for oil and gas and reap huge tax windfalls for their citizens, along with helping us become less dependant on forgeign oil, then the next time a hurricane or earthquake comes along, don't look for those of us in fly-over country to send our tax dollars to help you rebuild your homes and economy. Pelosi is an ignorant wench who represents all that America does not stand for.

How did Nan get to work today? Perhaps she could lead more by example than by gassing us.

I agree with you 100%. What caused the electricity shortages a few years ago? I think Davis was governor then... Is CA (Pelosi and Boxer) against nuke plants?

Next time Vandenberg AFB has a missile to test, can't we tie her to the front of it?

Let me see if I got this right, were not drilling off shore at these areas now so there isn't any royalties to the Federal Government now. But she's bitchin' that it would cost the Feds $69b over 15 years cause the royalties would go to the states not the Congress critters if they pass the drilling bill.

What a freaking bimbo!!

And attempt to build power plants in neighboring states to feed their greedy energy needs but not in their backyards.

This awful, greedy, big oil benefiting, environment destroying Republican bill sounds like great news for the energy sector portion of my 401K.

I remember an oil spill in the pacific over thirty years ago . I thought that that one came from a damaged tanker, bringing oil from Alaska ?
Maybe Ms Pelosi likes high gasoline prices and imported oil .

Republican Energy Policy Is to Drill in Protected Areas and Give Tax Breaks to Big Oil

And, if it succeeds in bringing us more oil and less imported oil and lower gas prices, the problem is?

The problem for Pel-Blowsi is that like most greenies, they only express outrage when gasoline is $3.50 a gallon, or heaven forbid the State of Kalfornia actually trying to produce one stinking drop of its own energy. These turds buy most of their electric from out of state grids, then bitch about the price! I say screw em, if we can't drill in Alaska, off shore, or build additional oil plants to produce gasoline, then 'Big Oil' should charge them any amount they want.

Reading this gobbledygook and typical liberal/dims/rats doublespeak, obfuscation (not to mention the usual outright lies) from this raving maniac, can anyone doubt just how important it is for the Pubs to hold onto the house and just how much work we must all do to insure this?

...including seabirds, marine mammals, and fisheries.

All good Democratic voters.

Tax breaks are cuts in the price of gas that does not go to the Feds. More domestic oil means less trade deficit. And, the height of absurdity, she will demand that the oil produced generate revenue to the Feds at market rate. The price of oil owned by the government should be free, otherwise it is a tax.
