NEW YORK (Reuters) - Billionaire Warren Buffett on Monday called for U.S. lawmakers to retain the estate tax, after announcing plans to leave more than $37 billion of his own fortune to charity, not his children.
Buffett spoke after agreeing to sign over roughly $30.7 billion of his $44 billion fortune to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, run by the Microsoft Corp. chairman and his wife, and another $6.4 billion to foundations on behalf of his late wife Susan and his children.
"I would hate to see the estate tax gutted," Buffett said at a Manhattan news conference with the Gateses about his donation.

You ignore everything that's inconvenient to you.
Again, you seem to believe that the gubmint taxes people because Huck says it's ok.
No I don't, strawman.
Taxes are a given. So then it just comes down to WHO gets taxed.
Not all types of taxes are a given. But nice try.
I advocate for me.
Ya think? You have said it over and over, we get it, "screw everyone else, it's all about me".
You seem to think that's communistic.
Taxing based on wealth is communism. It's redistribution of wealth. It's the concept that all wealth belongs to "the people" or the state. I know that these childishly simple concepts are hard for you since you only get the "basics".
I don't know why you think that.
LOL, amazing, simply freakin' amazing.
You lied, again.
and me trying to explain Life 101 to someone who doesn't care to hear.
You are clueless to life 101.
Life's too short. I'm moving on.
I would cut and run too if I was you.
You forgot to answer the question about whether or not you would oppose the death tax if you had great wealth or children.
(You will never have great wealth because you ain't got what it takes, and we can only give thanks that you will not have children.)
My younger two kids haven't had a cold in over a year.
Of course I don't send them to the local "Contagion Exchange Facility", aka Publick Scruels.
It's actually a tax on those not cynical enough to buy effective estate planning. This is not good policy.
Maybe you'd like to be the one who provides the actual, hard data regarding the effect of the estate tax on "working families" and the number of family farms and homes lost to estate taxes. Seems like somebody should, given the frequency with which this apocryphal canard is tossed around.
My giving only goes to my Church and my family.
You can support the socialists.
Oh stick a sock in it, Buffett.
You still seem a little mixed-up. Anyone who pays taxes (everyone) supports the socialists. Unless you want to evade taxes, you can't escape that simple fact. As for the estate tax, I don't have kids, and don't expect to, so I don't think I'll be paying a dime in estate taxes. I plan to give my entire empire away--most likely to my wife, who I hope will live longer than I expect to.
Good for you. Each to his own.
The stuff you see advocated on this website is astounding sometimes.
It's Warren Buffett, not Jimmy Buffett.
What's retarded is those who assume he's not going to deduct the contribution to avoid paying taxes.
This should be preserved for search posterity...
Tax his land,
Tax his bed,
Tax the table
At which he's fed.
Tax his tractor,
tax his mule,
Teach him taxes
are the rule.
Tax his cow,
Tax his goat,
Tax his pants,
Tax his coat.
Tax his ties,
Tax his shirt,
Tax his work,
Tax his dirt.
Tax his tobacco,
Tax his drink,
Tax him if he
Tries to think.
Tax his cigars,
Tax his beers,
If he cries, then
Tax his tears.
Tax his car,
Tax his gas,
Find other ways
To tax his ass
Tax all he has
then let him know
that you won't be done
till he has no dough.
When he screams and hollers,
Then tax him some more,
Tax him till
he's good and sore.
Then tax his coffin,
Tax his grave,
Tax the sod in
Which hes laid.
Put these words
upon his tomb,
"Taxes drove me
to my doom..."
When he's gone,
Do not relax,
Its time to apply
The inheritance tax.

COMMENTS: Not one of these taxes existed 100 years ago and our nation was the most prosperous in the world, had absolutely no national debt, had the largest middle class in the world and Mom stayed home to raise the kids.
What happened?
Who assumes that? And what has that got to do with anything? I deduct charitable gifts from my taxes. Don't you?
Of course I do, because I believe the government has more than enough of my money.
My point is that he's being disingenuous when he states that the government has some sort of claim to people's assets in the name of a greater good. He's hiding his from taxation in a way that normal folks can't.
Don't forget though, the gold coin you paid a buck for- you were taxed on THAT buck as well. You may have earned 1.35, but after taxes, you had 1.00 left over.
Joe Six Pack accepts it as the norm. This is why I am a staunch supporter of no pay withholding. Just payup on April 15th.
Most people give it away than allow the government to steal it. I'd burn it before I allowed a bunch of crooked bureaucrats get their hands on it.
What a narrow-minded remark for him to make. To many people who aren't billionaires, the Death Tax is a Big Deal.
People fawn on Buffett but he is very socialist with his thinking. If he wants to pay more tax, he can pay more. He can donate his fortune to the US treasury and watch it go up in smoke. Instead, he donates to the Gates Foundation so they can do "real good" for mankind because he knows the US government will squander the money. I wish he would stop trying to agitate government towards his socialist ways.
