U.S. military: Top al Qaeda member captured

Friday, June 23, 2006; Posted: 5:36 a.m. EDT (09:36 GMT)

BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) -- Less than two weeks after al Qaeda in Iraq leader Musab al-Zarqawi was killed in a U.S. airstrike, coalition forces detained a senior member of the terrorist network, according to the U.S. military.

A military statement Friday did not identify the man who was captured during a raid on Monday. That raid came two days after another senior member of the network -- Mansur Sulayman Mansur Khalif, also known as Sheikh Mansur -- also was killed in a coalition airstrike.

Monday's raid took place southwest of Baquba, not far from where al-Zarqawi's safehouse -- north of Baquba -- was bombed on June 7.

The man detained along with three other suspected terrorists "is reportedly a senior al Qaeda cell leader throughout central Iraq, north of Baghdad," the military statement said.

"He is known to be involved in facilitating foreign terrorists throughout central Iraq, and is suspected of having ties to previous attacks on Coalition and Iraqi forces," it said.

The military said the raid also turned up an AK-47 and several magazines of ammunition that the coalition forces destroyed on site.

Several women and children, who were present at the sites of the raid, were all returned to their homes, unharmed, after the forces determined the area was secured, the statement said.

I didn't have time to read the article... They caught John Kerry?

I hate the word 'detained'. I would much rather read that 'Coalition forces roughed-up, bitch slapped, punched, kneed in the groin and knocked the teeth out of a senior member of the terrorist network'.

Don't worry. By tomorrow, Murtha, Kennedy, and/or Kerry will be claiming just that. Unfortunately, they'll be describing it as a *bad* thing.

"Oh, NO!", scream Jack al-Murthawi, Turban Durban, Flipper Kerry, Swimmer Kennedy, and Mom Sheehan. "Why couldn't they have killed them, too!? Oh, the lost opportunity to rip the American troops in front of the whole world!"

Give them enough time and they'll find a way.

BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) -- A bomb detonated Friday outside a Sunni mosque near Baquba, north of Baghdad, killing nine civilians and wounding 15 others, police said.

Nine civilians... so who were the 15 others?

Was this added as a dig at the press???

If so, I love it!

They might have been the ones who were hiding behind the civilians.

Unfortunately most of their recruited members are not Iraqi but Saudi, Egyptian, Syrian, Jordanian, etc......

They intimidate complete neighborhoods when they arrive, like Mexican bandito's in a bad 1950's western......

They couldn't care less for the Iraqi's (their fellow Muslims) that they kill.....

It was a statement of fact.

Sigh, we're too far down the road if it's hard to tell the difference between truth and spin.

An anonymous member of the State Department you say? Wonder who that could be.

Alger Hiss.

I am beginning to believe that the right side of the aisle is not much better in this regard!

With few exceptions, you are correct. Essentially, what we have is a duopoly. Pay attention to what they do, not what they say. Each side routinely covers for the other. I find it comical, though, that the Dims are blowing this "culture of corruption" smoke as if they have their own house in order.

The real question is whether the problem lies within those corrupt elected officials or with the folks who keep sending the crooks back to Washington......

That was some "air strike."
I just saw the unmanned predator footage on Fox.....They nailed the absolute top Al-Qaeda spirtual leader while he and his armed diaper heads were driving along some dirt road.
Very sweet footage.....you have to see it.

Well, to borrow the Hydra mythology, Heracles was able to kill the monster by cauterizing the Hydra's severed neck each time a head was lopped. This prevented new heads from sprouting.

In a way, this sounds like what Bush is attempting in Iraq. Once that neck has been cauterized, we'll move on to another one, and another one...

Gee, I'm sorry that the news doesn't live up to your expectations. I'm sure our military will try harder next time.
