U.S. military: Top al Qaeda member captured

Friday, June 23, 2006; Posted: 5:36 a.m. EDT (09:36 GMT)

BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) -- Less than two weeks after al Qaeda in Iraq leader Musab al-Zarqawi was killed in a U.S. airstrike, coalition forces detained a senior member of the terrorist network, according to the U.S. military.

A military statement Friday did not identify the man who was captured during a raid on Monday. That raid came two days after another senior member of the network -- Mansur Sulayman Mansur Khalif, also known as Sheikh Mansur -- also was killed in a coalition airstrike.

Monday's raid took place southwest of Baquba, not far from where al-Zarqawi's safehouse -- north of Baquba -- was bombed on June 7.

The man detained along with three other suspected terrorists "is reportedly a senior al Qaeda cell leader throughout central Iraq, north of Baghdad," the military statement said.

"He is known to be involved in facilitating foreign terrorists throughout central Iraq, and is suspected of having ties to previous attacks on Coalition and Iraqi forces," it said.

The military said the raid also turned up an AK-47 and several magazines of ammunition that the coalition forces destroyed on site.

Several women and children, who were present at the sites of the raid, were all returned to their homes, unharmed, after the forces determined the area was secured, the statement said.

The house of a drug dealer in the US would turn up more goodies than this.

Apparently you didn't read the story then to make such a comment.

Or perhaps you thought that Al-Qaeda reported that a top Al-Qaeda member was captured by our military.

Not if the MSN and libs can dismiss 500 chemical warheads by claiming that they weren't the WMD we were looking for.

Besides, capturing AQ leaders in Iraq isn't evidence of an AQ presence in Iraq, now is it?

No evidince of WMDs and no evidence of Iraq1-Al Qaeda ties.

Bush lied...blah blah blah...

there you go again, making assumptions.

I did read the entire article. I was actually surprised by the quality of the reporting, particularly at the end when they noted that the civilians were returned to the area, unharmed. that was a nice touch.

and I realize that Al Qaeda wasnt the source of the report that we captured the guy. I know, it was our own military. and I think that's great that we got him. I was just making a statment that it seems as if they have a bajillion "top" guys. nothing more, nothing less.

You read waaaaay too far into what I said. I wasnt trying to discredit the intelligence or efforts by our military, I wasnt slamming anybody like that. If you don't understand what I'm trying to say by now, just forget about it. I can only explain it from so many angles.

by the way, sorry about the smart-@$$ comment. I was a little heated.

The TraitorcRATS are concerned that we will accidentially destroy the insurgency before November and screw up their election strategy.

As I recall, in the myth Hercules cut off the heads and burned the stumps, crushing the immortal head beneath a rock. At the rate we're going, we will know who the leader of Al-Qaeda is before the new leader does.

I hate the word 'detained'. I would much rather read that 'Coalition forces roughed-up, bitch slapped, punched, kneed in the groin and knocked the teeth out of a senior member of the terrorist network'.

Those two things are not mutually exclusive. I've noticed recently more reports of terrorists killed. I don't know if the Iraqi forces are less interested in taking prisoners, or if we are only "detaining" the useful (i.e., high level) ones.

We can't do what you're suggesting. Those women and children were probably helpless victims of the b*stard terrorists; we just can't behave like them. I think we'll find out that this Haditha thing is a tissue of lies, too.

Did you know that 25 Iraq students departed for the United States in January 2005 for the reestablished Fulbright program?

Did you know that the Iraqi Navy is operational?! They have 5 100-foot patrol craft, 34 smaller vessels and a naval infantry regiment.

Did you know that Iraq 's Air Force consists of three operational squadrons, which includes 9 reconnaissance and 3 US C-130 transport aircraft (under Iraqi operational control) which operate day and night, and will soon add 16 UH-1 helicopters and 4 Bell Jet Rangers?

Did you know that Iraq has a counter-terrorist unit and a Commando Battalion?

Did you know that the Iraqi Police Service has over 55,000 fully trained and equipped police officers?

Did you know that there are 5 Police Academies in Iraqthat produce over 3500 new officers each 8 weeks?

They include 364 schools, 67 public clinics, 15 hospitals, 83 railroad stations, 22 oil facilities, 93 water facilities and 69 electrical facilities.

Did you know that 96% of Iraqi children under the age of 5 have received the first 2 series of polio vaccinations?

Did you know that 4.3 million Iraqi children were enrolled in primary school by mid October?

Did you know that the Baghdad Stock Exchange opened in June of 2004?

Did you know that 2 candidates in the Iraqi presidential election had a televised debate recently?

OF COURSE YOU DIDN'T KNOW . .AND I DIDN'T KNOW!

WHY DIDN'T WE ?

OUR MEDIA WOULDN'T TELL US!

Instead of reflecting our love for our country, we get photos of flag burning incidents at Abu Ghraib and people throwing snowballs at the presidential motorcades.

The lack of accentuating the positive in Iraq serves two purposes. It is intended to undermine the world's perception of the United States , thus minimizing consequential support, and it is intended to discourage American citizens.
