Xer Ping Ping list for the discussion of the politics and social (and sometimes nostalgic) aspects that directly effects Generation Reagan / Generation-X (Those born from 1965-1981) including all the spending previous generations (i.e. The Baby Boomers) are doing that Gen-X and Y will end up paying for.

1. BMI is bull#$@%. Don't believe any study based on that crap.
2. I thought obesity was an AMERICAN problem, you know, McDonald's and BK and Taco Bell et al. I know those franchise now reach foreign shores but I doubt it has reached the point where the whole world is scarfing down value meals from us evil Americans. So why are Aussies getting fat if American capitalism isn't to blame?
3. I thought Gen X grew far beyond the range of 1966 to 1970. Bad sample size to be drawing such broad conclusions? Maybe the kids from 1971-1980 aren't in as bad shape and would screw up their data? Hmm?
4. As Gen Xers get older, there will be a whole host of new and better medicines and treatments for high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, heart disease, etc. So it's downright stupid to think Gen Xers will be stuck with the very same treatments that the Boomers are facing today.
In short, the story is more alarmist, health-nazi propoganda. Funny how the libs who also argue that the world is overpopulating itself care so deeply that people are dying off faster. You'd think they'd be happy about that - meaning there is some other agenda involved. Could it be more government control of our lives? I kinda think so.

"Diet and lack of physical activity have been blamed for the Generation Xs being more prone to plumpness, having grown up with television, computer games, fast food restaurants and larger meal sizes"
I was born in '68 and sure don't remember growing up with computer games (when was the first affordable PC introduced to the market?) and a plethera of fast food restaurants. I vaguely remember when the first Atari came out, and I think I was a teenager when cable came to our area of the country. What a crock of an article. Now if they were to do a study on my son's generation (born in 1990), then the above definitely applies!!

Nanny state idiocy.
What the article does not mention is that the definitions of obesity were recently redefined. If you're not rail-thin, you're considered obese.
I hit my ideal weight in the 6th grade (going by the current scale). Muscle, body structure, etc....don't count. I have a friend that is 200-ish pounds, and not an ounce of fat on him. He bikes hundreds of miles a week and is in top shape. His doc tried to put him on a diet because he was 'obese'. My friend fired the guy, and found a new doc.

I know the American diet is poor in many ways. The usage of corn syrup, hydrogenated oils are a big factor in addition to high fat foods. I look at many labels of food products and these two ingredients are most commonly used.
The other day, I was at Fazoli's and inquired if they used olive oil and the response is no. When I cook, I use olive oil in place of butter in food preparation.
I am now 40 years old. About 5 years ago, I decided to get off the couch, give up the McD's and other fast food and started to bike. I dropped my weight from 170 lbs down to as low as 135 but usually hover around 145 lbs. I started to feel better and quit having problems with heartburn. I also gave up soda pop and switched to ice tea and eventually to water.

The study found the Body Mass Index (BMI), a measure incorporating weight and height, rose in adults of all generations over a 10-year period. BMI is a load of crap and is a flawed method for measuring obesity.
