PALMYRA, Pa. - Parents who visit their children at lunch would be required to eat school food rather than bring the children fast-food lunches under a proposed wellness policy in the Palmyra Area School District.
That doesn't set well with some parents. Lori Swisher, who has three children at Forge Road Elementary School, agreed the schools don't need soda machines or daily doughnuts, but bristled at "one more government restriction."
Swisher said she occasionally has brought pizza or a sub to her kids at school. "I like to think I serve mostly healthy meals, but when all three have sports, sometimes fast food is the option," she said.
The school board will vote June 15 on the guidelines, which Collene Van Noord, director of curriculum and instruction, said is part of a nationwide effort to combat childhood obesity by teaching healthy eating and exercise habits.
Proposed changes include limiting the selection of a la carte treats in the cafeterias and encouraging healthier treats for classroom holiday parties for Valentine's Day and Halloween. "We're not saying no cupcakes and birthday treats," Van Noord said, but veggies and fruit will be encouraged.
The thought of it now makes me cringe. Thanks goodness I was blessed with good teeth!
Excellent point, my friend. And one I tend to forget ebcause i only have the one.
I'm not sure what would lead you to that conclusion, but you're not alone - see my reply #49.
I assume smart guys like you would be in charge.
Who better? :) No, seriously it bugs the shite out of me to see the gov't elitists, media, movie stars, talk show hosts, etc. take control of the thinking and therefore the lives of so many lemmings who are just so happy to let them.
When I agree with the statement that a lot of people need to be told what to do, I'm making an observation about human nature, not a proscription.

People may not like government restrictions, but the sad fact is that most people in this world (and this nation) need to be told what to do and when to do it.
If that's your belief, what are you doing on a constitutional conservative website?
Sorry, I'm going to have to agree with the caller on this one. I'm basically independent / conservative, and like most people on this forum, a big part of that is thinking for myself. But the sad fact is that most people would rather chew glass than use their brains, and are perfectly willing to indenture themselves to anybody who will do their thinking for them.

That post led me to that conclusion. Others seem to have seen it as well. So you just repudiated it (I think) and it's on to the next thing.
"If that's your belief, what are you doing on a constitutional conservative website?"
Fitting right in with all the other control-freak nanny-staters that are here for some reason?
My god!
The 'open borders crowd' has let a bunch of communists into FreeRepublic.
That looks great. I've bookmarked it. :)
I would bet that the schools doesn't have much of a recess, probably just standing around and talking so nobody gets hurt. The same thing with PE, if they still have it. All this touchy feely stuff, don't want anybody to be the slowest, so they don't run anymore, no more gymnastics etc. The schools have demonized competition and they don't allow physical activity. When they get home its the same thing, sit at the computer or play video games. All three of my boys play sports and are active. I've had many parents say to me they could never do the sports like we do because its too time consuming. Do they eat junk food, heck yeah, I should buy stock in Little Debbies for my oldest son, my middle prefers meat and fruit, my youngest a mix. Take your kids out bike riding, rollerblading, get them off their butts and away from the t.v.
"Very good."
Think the schools could do anything about the stupid kids?
Good for you! I taught my daughter to bake early on. Teachers kept telling me that they thought she should be tested for hyperactivity--forget the PC name for it. I just tried to keep her busy. Whenever she got too ansy, she would go in and bake. I enjoyed seeing her turn her energy to something constructive. But she never learned what your kids are learning. I think it's great! And she and her friend will have such pride in knowing that they can do things well that has significance for them and their families. Talk about self esteem! That was never an issue when kids were given tasks that their families depended on! I know that you aren't "depending" on your daughter, but she is doing something that contributes to the health and well being for her family. Pretty head stuff, actually!
That sentence tells you all you need to know about obesity in children.. notice how this mother didn't say "fast food is an option".. she said it is "THE" option.
Its not, you can be on the run constantly and still provide good nitritious meals, you just have to make the conscious effort to do so.
Can a school on school grounds ban certain foods? I don't see a reason why not... some may not like it, but in that limited context I see no large problem with it.
Thanks for the software tips!
I have four kids. Only one of them had an after-school activity. That was twice a week for a half hour. The oldest has band, but that is mostly during school hours. That's it.
There is barely enough time for homework and baths when they get out of school at 4.
We have no organized activities during the summer, except for Vacation Bible School. We may add piano/guitar lessons or gymnastics next year so it may be a bit busier, but I am determined to keep our lives from being too hectic.
Is that you, Karl Marx?
I don't know about your school; but my comments were mostly referencing gym and recess. I have 3 kids. They each have gym once every 6 days.
Gym use to be a daily class.
Here we go.
Panthermom spelt out my post 77 very well

Please explain, particularly the last phrase. You lost me on that one.
I assumed you were responding to my post 56 until I just looked. I was working on my websites and not following the thread. So neither of my last two comments make too much sense in reference to post 77.

And that attitude is only one small reason to abolish all government schools.
It's fun to watch the gargantuan nanny state turn around to bite the antismokers in the face, just like we said it would. Enjoy!
