Gay Marriage Ban Short of Votes in Senate
The Washington Times ^ | Jun 5, 2006 | LAURIE KELLMAN

WASHINGTON (AP) -- President Bush and congressional Republicans are aiming the political spotlight this week on efforts to ban gay marriage, with events at both ends of Pennsylvania Avenue - all for a constitutional amendment with scant chance of passage but wide appeal among social conservatives.

"Ages of experience have taught us that the commitment of a husband and wife to love and to serve one another promotes the welfare of children and the stability of society," Bush said in his weekly radio address. "Government, by recognizing and protecting marriage, serves the interests of all."

The president was to make further remarks Monday in favor of the amendment as the Senate opened three days of debate. Neither chamber, though, is likely to pass the amendment by the two-thirds majority required to send it to the states - three quarters of which would then have to approve it.

Many Republicans support the measure because they say traditional marriage strengthens society; others don't but concede the reality of election-year politics.

"Marriage between one man and one woman does a better job protecting children better than any other institution humankind has devised," said Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, R-Tenn. "As such, marriage as an institution should be protected, not redefined."

But Judiciary Committee Chairman Arlen Specter, R-Pa., said he will vote against it on the floor but allowed it to survive his panel in part to give the Republicans the debate party leaders believe will pay off on Election Day. Specter has chosen a different battle with the Bush administration this week - a hearing Tuesday on the ways the FBI spies on journalists who publish classified information.

Poligamy will sooner or later become legal; look at the Dutch example (forbidden by law, but allowed by the constitution... which put the dutch parliament in a limbo a while ago).

Slovenia (country where I live) made a good deal on marriage. We have two types of marriage; civil and religious. Religious marriage is not recognised by the state, so if you had a religious marriage you still have to get married by the state.
(Also, a couple living together for more than 3 years are automatically given the status of a married couple (but in another name, and not counted towards the marriage count).

Which is why we don't have this particular religion/rights clash problem.

Very few homosexual (at least male) couples are monogamous.

All the gay guys I know in a relationship are monogamous...Though you comment makes me wonder whether I'm hanging out with boring gay guys.

Securing the nation's borders is, however, probably the main task of any government. It'd be nice if this government got around to performing this task.

But, but, but you just don't understand. What good will it do by securing our borders when the gay mariage will end society as we know it right from within our borders. The very existence of marriage between man and woman is being threatened before our eyes. A constitutional ammendment is our only chance for survival. The future of civilization is at stake here.

Sooner or later you get someone posting the bible... happens on almost every thread.
Don't have a decent argument... bring out the bible.

Can I bring out the Book of Shadows and start citing out of that particular book? Would that also have some credibility?

BTW; the sin of Sodom was inhospitability towards the visitors. Read the texts in original language whenever possible, and when that is not possible try for the language it was translated in afterwards.

You want gubmint involved in families? Holy crap, no!

Gee, it's a good thing we've never let them get involved with families.

Personally, I'd favor winding the clock back that far. So after you get Social Security and welfare programs and children's programs and agencies repealed, let me know.

It is precisely because government and business is so involved with family life and finance that sodomy marriage has become such a freebie attraction for the SADs people. And that includes adoption rights.

It has real consequences.

Yup, probably the best approach is to round them up and put them in concentration camps. Those gays are sure pushy aren't they. Next thing you know they'll be demanding life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Imagine that?
My marriage has been on the rocks ever since gay rights movement started, proof that we need a defense of marriage ammendment.

"end society as we know it right"

Do you believe then that we have reached the pinnacle of our society, the best that humanity has to offer?
Society changes every day, little by little and there's nothing that an amendment can do (in fact it changes the society).

No matter what you do, society will change.

"The future of civilization is at stake here."
Due to 1%(the number which most people here cite)of the people?

Actually, pushing gay "marriage" and throwing open the borders are both destructive to the country.

So it would seem... Or that's where the "real conservatives" are coming from these days.

I think it's a sign that my friends (not me!) are getting old. Too bad for them, really. I've known a lot of them for 20 years. Hate to see that happen.

I've never met any though almost all of them pretend to be. A few radicals espouse open marriage nonsense.

Perhaps you're just very gullible.

I happen to share the experience with durasell here. Of the gay people that I know only one is a bit more promiscous, but he's under 20 so it's kinda to be expected (not that straight guys are any better at that age).
We constantly remind him to use protection ^_^. And if he didn't we'd kick his ass =).

IF one the other hand you simply wish to remain a "conservative" member of the electorate I suggest you petition your legislature and attempt to form consensus on your opinion of what should and should not be in regards to marriage.

Last time I checked, it was the "Republican Party", not the "Statist" party. Since when did promoting government intrusion into private relationships become the heart of the GOP?

LOL -I thought I was humorously stating the obvious -that opining about the lack of conservative political consensus on a certain viewpoint implies but one political reality...

I've known a lot of these guys for 20 years or more. As much as I'd like to believe they're leading the swinging lifestyle of their youth, it just strains the imagination at this stage of the game.

Why don't you try asking the judges that started this mess by not comprehending the basic meaning of words. This shouldn't be necessary, but it is.
